about

It’s no exaggeration to suggest that DJ Q could be the most influential UK dance producer of the last 15 years.

A forefather to modern UK Garage and Bassline with both underground anthems and legitimate chart hits to his name, it’s hard to think of someone as respected across the board as Q. Cast an eye across the most revered Garage & Bass producers of recent times and it becomes very hard to ignore his sizeable shadow.

As Resident Advisor put it in a recent flagship article on UK Garage, “no-one has kept the flame [of Bassline and UK Garage] alive for longer than DJ Q”. When BBC Radio 1xtra — where in 2004, aged just 19, he became the youngest ever DJ to host a regular show — ran a recent poll to find out the ultimate UK Garage record, his classic ‘Brandy & Coke’ (released on Local Action in 2012) was the only record of the last decade to feature. As respected by American superstars such as Skrillex as homegrown headliners like Four Tet, Q is, quite simply, a titan of UK music. We labour the point because it bears repeating.

Although a big part of Q’s status comes from the size of his catalogue — he’s been releasing music regularly since 2004 — many of his most enduring releases have come with the Local Action label. Q and Local Action first connected with the aforementioned ‘Brandy & Coke’, before releasing a run of singles leading up to his debut album, Ineffable. Each time the two have combined since, on the long-awaited release of fan favourites ‘Rocky’ and ‘Poison’ and the 8-bit inspired instrumental ‘Sonic’, it’s resulted in a new classic under Q’s belt.

‘All That I Could’ represents Q’s first release on Local Action since 2016, and the start of a series of new Q releases for the year ahead. Two instant anthems that showcase his endlessly-honed ability to excel at both sweet 2-Step Garage and driving 4x4 Bassline, with a practised ear for vocal hooks like few others, it’s a timely reminder that no matter how many artists he continues to influence, there’s nobody who’s perfected these styles quite like Q.
