Grimmrobe An absolute game-changer of an album in the realm of progressive death metal.

David Fischer Atmospheric death metal is a) insanely hard to do well, b) - if one succeeds - a thing of beauty, and c) obviously not enough of a challenge for Defacement! They added dissonance and progressiveness to it, hooking me with their s/t. Luckily, Duality is a more than worthy successor. Their, yes, duality of short, glitchy instrumentals and nonchalantly ghastly death metal traversed by atmosphere and brimming with riffs is exceptionally well executed. Also, the album sounds incredible. Top-tier! Favorite track: Duality.

Camelus Dromedarius One of the most extreme and inspired works of art to ever grace my ears. Undoubtedly among the best of 2024. Favorite track: Duality.

Ippocalyptica The cover art accurately depicts what happens to one’s face while listening to Duality, which is by far Defacement’s most ambitious and risk-forward release to date. The electronic interludes are not gimmicky at all but rather integral to the oppressive atmosphere and narrative at play. The musicians’ technical prowess is on full display but nothing here is too ostentatious because the goal is to punish, rather than impress, the listener. Dissonant and progressive death metal mastery! Favorite track: Duality.

With an inception going back to 2019, Defacement rapidly gained momentum within the underground realms with two full-length records, marked by an intense and experimental take on Death and Black Metal.

Three long years after 'Deviant' (2019) and its self-titled successor (2021), the international band flares its cryptic head yet again, with an epic tome of twisted and gnarly emanations and an all around immersive pathway into the void, entitled 'Duality'.

Ulcerate is not quite known for their memorable songs (exceptions exist of course), and that's why I welcomed the approach they took with the previous album that introduced more coherent song structures and distinguishable themes, while keeping the pitch-dark and somber atmosphere and technicality. So, this album following on the same path is a welcome feat for me, seeing this not as repetition but as an attempt to better hone the approach that was introduced previously. Lefteris Kefalas
