Since 2018, Energy Groove radio show Deep Scan has been unearthing the electronic gems of Sydney’s underground to cross-continental listeners. Firmly rooted in the rougher terrain of their city’s burgeoning scene, Tom Vanderzeil (Passive Kneeling) and Erin Nortje (R-T-FAX) curate playlists that draw sonically from local outliers and breaking international acts.

The compilation is best consumed in full buffet style but sampling from the à la carte menu can also yield a artisanal experience. Solid State Drive maps the Deep Scan network through three partitions: from ambient and downtempo towards footwork, IDM and techno, before lurching into harder, darker territories. Punctuating each chapter are interludes that depict a disgruntled caller, having problems with an SSD. The caller has raised the issue of a various glitches, corruption with black and white vector images and a Bandcamp cart full of breakcore. The interludes set the scene for the concept that entangles the label side of Deep Scan, which exists inside a fictional post-apocalyptic world.
