What options do we have for using digital twins? 🌐   The panel discussion "GIS - The foundation for digital twins" at INTERGEO CONFERENCE impressively demonstrated how digital twins (DT) are already being used in practice.   Ronny Zienert from the Saxony State Office for Basic Geoinformation reported on the ‘doubling of the Free State’ using a photorealistic image. The aim? The underestimated potential in industry. 🤝 Digital twins are revolutionising production processes and value chains, yet many companies are not fully exploiting their potential. Why is that? Hexagon's Industry Report shows that 96% of managers recognise the value of digital twins. However, only 16% of them plan to significantly increase their investment in this technology in the next two years. 📊 One obstacle, however, is the high demand for data quality. The effectiveness of digital twins depends heavily on accurate and complete data. Inaccurate data can falsify simulations and therefore result in incorrect decisions. In addition, the integration of digital twins proves to be challenging, as their implementation often requires the integration of sophisticated digital technologies into existing, older production systems. Another important factor is the high initial costs and the associated uncertainty. Digital twins enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI) will offer exponential added value to geodata and with these words, Dr. Burkhard Boeckem, CTO of Hexagon AB, leads through his keynote speech at the INTERGEO CONFERENCE 2024. 🎉 The changes brought about by AI-based digital twins have great potential and can be used in areas such as construction, infrastructure planning and maintenance, mining, agriculture and urban planning. Communication with a digital twin works in both directions, from the virtual to the real world and vice versa. This means that discrepancies and conflicts can be avoided.
