We create a bridge between academia & business, empowering companies & individuals in their sustainable transformation
Info
STAR is ESCP’s newest center for Sustainability Transformation & Applied Research. STAR creates unique value in three impact dimensions - research transfer, into new learning formats, fostering a global community of change-makers. Our vision is simple yet profound: a world where companies can transform sustainably, where they are part of the solution, not the problem. Our mission is clear - to create an environment where organizations and individuals share experience, learn, and exchange best practices about how to shift towards sustainable business models. RESEARCH TRANSFER STAR's first focus area is research transfer. We bridge the gap between academic research and practical application. We empower managers, entrepreneurs, policy-makers, consultants, and students with the knowledge they need to drive sustainability. At the same time, we do action research, helping organizations delve deep into topics they care about, supporting them in implementing sustainability, low cost, low risk. EDUCATION STAR's focus on education is about reinventing the traditional business school curriculum. We're creating learning formats that cultivate future leaders who drive change with heart, head, and hand. Our goal is to develop individuals capable of tackling the complexities of modern challenges, in constantly changing environments. We know that only complex individuals can offer complex solutions by considering a variety of perspectives and stakeholder interests. COMMUNITY STAR aims to create an ecosystem where purpose-driven organizations and change-makers connect, exchange, inspire, and support each other. We celebrate, study, and learn from sustainability pioneers, who share their stories of innovation and success. Join our community and benefit from more than 200 years of ESCP excellence in leading global business education. Become a part of our STAR network and STAR club, where your journey towards sustainability transformation begins.

On Thursday, November 28th, the ESCP Business School Berlin’s ESCP STAR Centre joined forces with the King's College London Centre for Sustainable Business (CSB) to host the 4th STARbowl Event: Digitalisation for Sustainability. The event was led by ESCP STAR Center Founder Prof. Florian Lüdeke-Freund and CSB Center Founder Prof. Jonatan Pinkse, who provided eye-opening academic models and framing around the topic. They were joined by industry experts Stephan König, Group Corporate Responsibility at Deutsche Telekom, Tomas van der Heijden, CEO and Co-Founder of Briink, and Erik van Buuren, Founder of SDiD who all delivered insightful perspectives on the real-world impact of AI and digital tools in sustainability. 🎯 Key takeaway: - Digital technologies present great opportunities for Sustainability practitioners, but they need to be used mindfully and prudently, their effects, benefits and challenges carefully examined, studied, and understood. - AI's transformative potential in driving sustainability—by enabling efficiency, reducing waste, and supporting renewable innovations—must be balanced against its unintended 'butterfly effects,' as even well-intentioned applications can generate significant environmental and social challenges. - When leveraging digital technologies for data processing and decision-making, it is imperative to prioritize human values, ensuring that data-driven approaches remain grounded in empathy and ethical considerations. A warm thank you to all the participants who managed to join the event and drive sustainability transformation forward with their passion, motivation, engagement, and dedication. Stay tuned for expert videos and interviews from the event on the ESCP STAR and Centre for Sustainable Business channels. Special thanks to the respective ESCP STAR and CBS teams who put in the effort, expertise, creativity, networking and energy to prepare, organise and produce the event for the benefit of the wider public. We are proud to celebrate the latest achievement of ESCP STAR Center co-Founder, Prof. Dr. Florian Lüdeke-Freund, with the publication of a significant journal article on sustainable business models! 🌍 In this research, Florian and his co-authors explore how businesses can not only create and capture value but also maintain, unlock, and share it to drive sustainability. 📖 Read the full article through the link in Florian’s original post here. This article was also recently featured in our STAR Newsletter! What Makes a Business Model Sustainable? ⚠️ It’s the ability to help companies in maintaining, unlocking, and sharing value! 📌 A sustainable business model helps ensuring the integrity and functionality of the natural environment and man-made artifacts, preserving their inherent value (💡 maintaining value). It helps utilising the untapped potential for sustainable value creation at the interfaces with customers and markets, and they make customers to do their part (💡unlocking value). And it supports involving, engaging, and supporting stakeholders to ensure they benefit from value creation in equitable and responsible ways (💡 sharing value). 📖 In our review of 390 journal articles, covering 20 years of research, we found that sustainable business models differ from conventional business models as they go beyond proposing, delivering, and capturing value. Sustainable business models create value by proposing, delivering, capturing, maintaining, unlocking, and sharing value. 👉 Example: We can distinguish a ‘Green Razor and Blade’ from a classic ‘Razor and Blade’ based on how they create value. The classic model aims at capturing value by locking customers in and boosting sales, often creating huge amounts of waste (e.g., Nespresso). The sustainability-oriented (‘green’) model follows a very similar logic, but it also helps in maintaining and unlocking the value inherent in the ‘razor’ and ‘blades’ (e.g., SodaStream). Gunnar Luderer Florian Lüdeke-Freund Gabriele Maurer Andreas Audretsch Chantal Kopf
