FTTX ODN Solution Introduction PON access system should be an all-optical solution in response to the continuously growing bandwidth requirements in the last-mile (access) domain. PON-based access network follows the trend of delivery of triple-play services to end subscribers, aggregating three types of services over a single delivery platform. This in turns is the next step in the evolution of the core networks to IP-based NGN. In order to build the new generation of optical access networks, this solution draws on the technologies of different maturity extents such as EPON, GPON, Ethernet and xDSL, ranging from local exchange devices of various capacities to serialized user-side devices. It can be deployed in various application scenarios, such as FTTC, FTTB, FTTO and FTTH, enabling operators to deliver services in a simple and straightforward manner, providing cost-effective  high-bandwidth and multi-service support capabilities. Another reason #euro2024 should be a fun watch – 5G will be involved! Broadcaster RTL Deutschland and Deutsche Telekom are working together to use 5G services via a private 5G network to deliver “data-intensive applications” with the network running in the 3.7GHz to 3.8GHz range and offering up to 100MHz of bandwidth to the broadcaster. O2 Telefonica lights up open RAN site in Germany: O2 Telefonica switched on its first virtualised RAN (vRAN) and open RAN commercial site in Germany to provide 4G and 5G services, with network supplier Samsung powering the deployment. Following lab tests, the two companies stated the commercial site is now live in Landsberg am Lech, Bavaria with plans to expand the vRAN and open RAN network to seven additional locations over the coming months. Mallik Rao, chief technology and information officer at Germany’s second largest operator., claimed open RAN is a building block that will help the operator automate its network, deploy new updates at a faster rate and utilise network components with more flexibility. For the initial launches, the vendor is supplying its O-RAN compliant radios, which include its 64T64R Massive MIMO radios, that support low-and-mid bands. The next step includes deploying Samsung’s network automation platform to control lifecycle management from deployment and operation to maintenance. The two companies first announced their collaboration in October 2023 ahead of the initial shipments three months ago of Samsung’s 4G and 5G kit and software. Over the past several years, Samsung has emerged as a 5G rival to leading equipment vendors Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei and ZTE. Among others, it has vRAN and open RAN network deals with Verizon and Vodafone Group. At the end of last year O2 Telefonica rival Deutsche Telekom (the country’s largest operator) revealed open RAN sites were operational in the German city of Neubrandenburg using equipment from partners Nokia and Fujitsu, with the operator targeting having more than 3,000 antenna locations compatible with the architecture by end-2026. Very important step in 5G innovation for railways application with DB, O2 Telefonica and Vantage towers. 🚄 Deutsche Bahn (DB), Ericsson, O2 Telefónica, and Vantage Towers have reached an important milestone in their "Gigabit Innovation Track" (GINT) project. Launched in May 2023 and funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport with around 6.4 million euros, this project aims to establish gigabit mobile and data connections on trains using 5G technology. 🔹 Key Highlights: Will enable rail passengers to communicate, work, or relax with high-speed internet, similar to home. Future data rates of up to 5 gigabits per second per train are projected. Vantage Towers has developed special radio masts that can be produced cost-effectively and pre-assembled, significantly speeding up deployment. Collaboration with Regio Infra Nordost (RIN), local authorities, and the BMDV enabled the commissioning of a 12 km test track in just eight months. The new masts are anchored in the ground, saving concrete and reducing CO2 emissions. Standing at around 15 meters high, they blend into the landscape and often don't require lengthy authorization procedures. This collaboration demonstrates the potential of innovative technology and strategic partnerships in improving rail travel, bringing high-speed internet on trains closer to reality. Interesting development for Mission Critical Networks as the connectivity for Europe's entire train network is to be upgraded to 5G (Gigabit train). The interesting thing is that partly the same solutions can also be used to create Gigabit connectivity for commercial aircrafts in the near future.

5G Transport Network Architecture (5G Series - Part 4) As 5G continues to reshape network infrastructure, it's important to explore how the transport network has evolved compared to 4G. In 4G, the connectivity between the baseband unit and the radio unit—known as the fronthaul—is handled by the Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI). This protocol supports throughput up to 10 Gbps, which was sufficient given 4G’s less stringent requirements for latency and data rates. However, 5G's performance demands are far more intense. With peak data rates 20 times higher and latency 10 times lower than 4G, the fronthaul protocol needed to evolve. Enter enhanced CPRI (eCPRI), which now supports throughput of up to 50 Gbps with latency below 0.1 milliseconds, meeting 5G’s stringent requirements. 5G introduces new connectivity points: 🔹 Mid-haul: Connecting the Distributed Unit (DU) and Central Unit (CU), the mid-haul can use fiber or wireless (e.g., microwave). While less demanding than fronthaul, it still requires up to 10 Gbps and latency below 2 milliseconds. The DU and CU can be separated, ensuring flexibility in deployment. 🔹 Backhaul: Linking edge locations to the core network, the backhaul in 5G handles significantly higher data loads, with requirements reaching up to 100 Gbps and latency under 10 milliseconds. At the edge, multiple central units and User Plane Functions (UPFs) are deployed, making backhaul performance critical. This new transport architecture underpins 5G's ability to deliver high-speed, low-latency services, bringing it closer to unlocking its full potential. I spent yesterday at the LS telcom Spectrum Summit, in Lichtenau near Baden Baden in southwestern Germany. LS does a range of products and services primarily for regulators and other government agencies interested in monitoring or managing #spectrum allocations, as well as telcos and enterprises running or deploying wireless #networks of all types. There were various panels and presentations on themes such as: - Outcomes from #WRC23 and insight into behind-the-scenes processes at ITU and national regulators in managing the agenda & onsite negotiations - Spectrum-sharing models, with a particular focus on sharing spectrum with the defence sector, satellite industry and (once more) 6GHz for #5G + #WiFi. There was also a good discussion by Martin Sims of PolicyTracker about whether advances in sharing fit well with current international regulatory mechanisms like WRCs. - Practicalities of #Private5G. There was a speaker and small demo booth from Siemens talking about the uses for Industrial 5G, as well as a network set up onsite in the German 3.7-3.8GHz band - What happens to the UHF band between 400-700MHz in future, especially around the longevity of broadcast TV vs. alternative use-cases - Ongoing work in the UAE to set up a comprehensive system of spectrum-monitoring and a big-data and analytics systems to optimise security & efficiency of usage - A demo of a drone-based monitoring tool and set of applications that can be used by regulators (or others) for deciding what spectrum bands are used in a given area, as well as hunting down any sources of interference. I was speaking on a panel about future models for converged networks, especially around 4G/5G/6G and satellite, Wi-Fi and other technologies. There were also presentations by GSOA about future #5G & #6G NTN integration, and a great talk by Meta about the real-world design & tech challenges in creating AR glasses, blending #WiFi, #Bluetooth and #5G. (Key takeout - use cellular via a tethered smartphone, not in the device itself, when Wi-Fi not available. Latency is less important than you think). As with last week's #EUspectrum event, there was a strong message that the 3GPP community is going to have to get used to more #spectrum sharing in future, especially for #6G, so it better get engaged and take it seriously ASAP. Also it needs to expect pushback on the idea of continual mobile data growth, and closer scrutiny of its demand forecasts. Lobbyists won't get as easy a ride in future. My own presentation is attached - basically I spoke about convergence vs. coexistence, and also the importance of divergence in some settings. I covered #indoorwireless, trains & enterprise wireless, but also noted that "spectrum efficiency" needs to take account of real-world constraints & user behaviour. Thanks to Saul Friedner for the invitatation. This was my 3rd time at the event & was very much worth the rather travel to somewhere quite remote!
