Qlik Answers - first impressions and thoughts (details) 1. Nice and slick first version of a new product. A basic but functioning user interface that is well integrated into the existing Qlik Sense Cloud user interface. Nice. 2. The concept of splitting the solution into "knowledge bases" and "assistants" is pretty neat. An assistant can be attached to at most 5 knowledge bases - good enough for starters at least. 3. It's "only" a RAG solution covering unstructured data such as PDFs, text files, Word, Powerpoint, Markdown etc. a. **NOT** data from Sense apps, nor from Excel files. Bummer. Hopefully coming in the future - would be very surprising if Qlik didn't plan for this. Data files in the form of CSV may be possible, but it's so far unclear how well Qlik Answers deals with such files. b. That said, from first hand experience I know that it is a lot more complex to create stable, predictable and well functioning chat bots using structured data compared to pure RAG solutions. Most of today's LLMs are simply not very good at dealing with math related questions, for example. Specifically trained LLMs may be needed, or at least LLMs augmented with agents that handle the fields/topics the LLM itself isn't good at (such as math, statistics etc). This is an area of extremely active development though, so things are changing/improving each week it seems. c. Today it's very doable to add LLM agents that collect data from outside of the LLM, for example using a search engine to get information from any web site. Qlik Answers does currently not do anything along these lines it seems - but that's not expected given the current product offering. So no problem there, but maybe an area of future innovation. d. Some RAG solutions don't link well to the underlying documents, or don't provide good citations. Qlik Answers does this in a reasonably nice and clear way - well done! 4. Good selection of options for setting up a "knowledgebase", for example various data connections (Amazon S3, Azure storage, Dropbox, Google storage etc), documents already uploaded to a Qlik Sense catalog, or upload new files. 5. Today there are plenty of RAG solutions out there, ranging from SaaS products to tools for developers that are developing their own RAG solutions (which is actually quite easy these days - a few dozen lines of code gets you a working proof-of-concept). Qlik Answers is positioned as a SaaS product, which makes perfect sense. 6. Unclear what LLM Qlik is using behind the scenes. How that part is implemented is important as it affects if/to what degree the uploaded docs are sent to 3rd parties. Can be important to some companies in some jurisdictions. 7. Qlik Sense Cloud is a nice example of how cloud services enable much more frequent release of new features, bug fixes etc. While the client-managed/on-premise version of Qlik Sense (which is still an awesome product!) releases every 6 months, its cloud sibling get new features almost every week, sometimes even more frequently. Both models of course work, but it is for sure a bit overwhelming when 6 months of new features, bug fixes etc drops on you... It's really nice to see how a company that used to be 100% on-prem focused has managed to adapt and embrace a ship-features-often mentality in its cloud products. 🤔 How frustrating is it when presentation options are not consistent between different visualisations? So a very nice recent update in Qlik Sense Saas to ensure that all objects in the Visualisation and Dashboard Bundles now contain the consistent Presentation Styling properties available in all the existing standard viz. This styling includes: 🔠 Font styling of titles, 🌈 Background color and image options 🔲 Border and shadow settings Consistency makes everything so much easier, especially when combined with the handy Copy Style option. Nice change? Or (controversial) just reaching the level it should have been at from the beginning? P.S. If you're European, how do you feel about the whole s👈 vs 👉z situation when it comes to spelling vi(s/z)ualisation? 🎉 Unified reload failed alerts between Qlik Cloud and client-managed Qlik Sense I know, all the cool kids are in the cloud these days. And #Qlik Cloud is really, really shaping up to be a good tool. Fantastic improvements and new features launched during past 6-12 months. Still, plenty of companies are still using the client-managed/on-prem version of Qlik Sense, and this is also where the open source Butler tool has served well during past 6-7 years. Butler does a lot of things, but the most commonly used feature is its powerful and flexible reload task monitoring/alerting. Over the years it has evolved into a very capable monitoring and alerting solution. ➡ And... with Butler 13.0 (released yesterday, Oct 15) that monitoring extends to Qlik Cloud too! Are you migrating to Qlik Cloud but still have some apps in old, trusty client-managed Sense? Butler 13.0 could be very, very useful. You could then monitor both Sense products with a single tool, getting alerts in the same format no matter where the failure occured. When an app fails reloading in Qlik Cloud you get alerts to your choice of email, Teams and Slack. Nicely formatted with 50+ templating fields to include in the alerts. Just as Butler works with client-managed Sense. You can even decide to keep the full script logs of all failed reloads on local disk, outside of Qlik Cloud. Can make it a lot more effective investigating what caused that app to fail reloading. 👍 Very nice - the May 2024 version of Qlik Sense (client-managed) adds pre-loading (a.k.a. cache warming) of Sense apps from the QMC. Small little feature, but can be quite useful. Exactly the use case I solved back in 2016 with Butler CW - 8 years ago - time indeed flies. Maybe it's now time to sunset that project, as having the same feature built-in is of course much preferred. Or... 🤔 While the new built-in cache warmer in Sense *does* allow for easy and flexible pre-loading of certain apps from disk into RAM, it does *NOT* (from what I can tell) pre-calculate charts, tables etc in the app's sheets. Loading an app into RAM is the first (and most important) step of cache warming, but pre-rendering UI objects is also important, given how Qlik Sense's associative engine works with respect to caching. Bottom line: User may still be faced with some waiting time when opening the pre-loaded apps, depending on  a) how complex visualisations the app has b) how big the app is b) what the app's data model looks like It's a nice first step though, and speaking from almost a decade of cache warming experience I would suggest adding pre-rendering of the sheets too, possibly based on one or more bookmarks in the app. THEN I'll promise to shut down the Butler CW project. :) Oh yes, the May 2024 release of client-managed Qlik Sense also added features such as cyclic dimensions (finally! 🙌 ) and some serious improvements when it comes to fine tuning visuals for charts, buttons, tables etc. This reduces/closes the gap to some of the competing products who have had better fine-tuning of user interface visuals.
