🌟Safety Innovation: The Pre-Crash Dual Stage Side Airbag🌟 A long word, but also a meaningful innovation. Achim Hofmann, Head of Core Engineering IRS & Inflator at ZF LIFETEC, explains the purpose of this development and how it works in this short video. He outlines the current state of technology and explains that a currently used side airbag fills the small area on the side of the occupant between the seat and the door trim when a side crash occurs. The Pre-Crash Dual Stage Side Airbag from ZF LIFETEC creates more space by gently pushing the occupant away from the crash site in its first stage. This provides room for the second stage, which functions like a conventional side airbag but now with more space for deployment. Last week the 28th Automobil-Elektronik Kongress brought many exciting thoughts around SDV Challenge and potential innovations. Here below my personal highlights and thoughts: - Top OEMs like #BMW, #Renault and #Stellantis shared common concerns: HW complexity is exponentially growing, security measures are increasing with it as well - Only a fraction of today’s SW platform is standardized, making integration effort a very hard challenge. - Open-Source SW is not for free and majority of the integration and qualification effort is repeated. - There is a clear need to generate a Safe SW platform driven by clear Stack Maintainers. - Francis Chow gave a great speech about how Open Source can help to face the aforementioned challenges and talked about Red Hat effort towards Safety. - SW will define the HW: OEMs need to define early in advance what to isolate and where to place it in the E/E architecture (safety and power constraints) #Semiconductors vendors highlights: - As NXP Semiconductors we shared our view on how the SDV efforts should be spent on brand differentiation, building strong partnership and enriching the ecosystem to accelerate development time. Great presentation Ray! - Qualcomm brought the challenge of fusing Infotainment and ADAS domain, highlighting the importance to implement the “freedom from interference” principle into their design. - Infineon presented the crucial role of power semiconductors in SDV, showing how the new E/E are only possible with safe & secure computing and high speed networsk. - Another key aspect for SDV is networking capability, indeed Rosenberg highlighted new options beyond copper wiring, presenting the advantages to build vehicle networking backbone based on glass optical-fiber. Last but not least, it was very interesting to see both #AppliedEV, T-System and #AuroraLabs demos based on both NXP Semiconductors S32G and i.MX devices! It was a pleasure for me to learn from key expert and understand how much work there is still ahead of us to concretely shape the future of #SDV !

2026, I stand by my estimate, will be the year of the solid state battery in production.   Over 400Wh/kg, 40% lower manufacturing costs, higher safety should be presented. I think service life and robust manufacturing processes are still difficult steps, especially with solid electrolytes.    At least SAIC is now committing itself and underpinning my assessment. Other manufacturers have also written a lot about this in recent months and with the intermediate steps of the semi-solid-state battery, SSSB has ambitions to use them this year (Nio and also SAIC)   However, my assumption is supported much more by the consortium called China All-Solid-State Battery Collaborative Innovation Platform (CASIP). This is an alliance of major Chinese battery manufacturers, tech companies and car manufacturers (e.g. CATL, CALB, EVE Energy, SVOLT, Gotion High-Tech, BYD battery subsidiary FinDreams, BYD and Nio) with the aim of developing and producing competitive solid-state batteries and establishing supply chains. Trying to measure “Innovation Strength” of OEMs in 2023 (!), and showing the top sellers in the BEV group - published today by Handelsblatt While I cannot change the Handelsblatt material and I find it really well done I suggest to call it “Electromobility Innovation Ranking” - see below *** why. A few details are needed. ➡️ The source of the ranking is the institute lead by Stefan Bratzel, Prof. Dr.: Center of Automotive Management (CAM) ➡️ the 2023 BEV Sales ranking on the right is straightforward ➡️ the column on the left is listing GEELY as leader for 2023 ➡️ interesting how neither Tesla or BYD took the top spot on the left, and where they are placed for 2023. ➡️ the long term ranking by innovation reads: 1 Tesla 2 Volkswagen Group 3 Geely 4 BYD 5 Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차) *** ➡️ Methodology for the 2023 ranking: CAM individually evaluated 512 innovations in electromobility for the past year alone that ended up in the sold product. Chinese manufacturers have developed 45 percent of these product and technology innovations and brought them to series production. 🔋 Exciting Insights from last week's Advanced Battery Power Conference There have been 2 days full of battery innovation and research at Münster with many talks, interesting speeches and high attendance numbers (>1,100). We FEV Europe GmbH had a stand at the booth and were able to hold many interesting discussions thanks to Bernd Hömberg, Prof. Martin Winter and Dirk Uwe Sauer. Here are my key findings: 📌 The most important prerequisites for EU competitiveness in the battery sector are low energy costs and industry funding. Current support from public authorities needs to be improved. In particular, EU research has made some gains in the development of solid-state battery cells, but CN consortia of cell suppliers will follow quickly 📌 Future cell formats will be mainly prismatic and cylindrical parallel, pouch with lower share 📌 Cell chemistry is evolving: LFP is further gaining traction; sodium-ion is becoming more interesting and NMC remains the choice for high energy applications. Interestingly, Solid-State technologies not have been in main focus beside the interest of the Chinese Suppliers forming a consortia… 📌 Main safety issues of last years due to thermal runaway / propagation are under control at system level, energy density vs. fast charging under discussion and cost reduction expected 📌 2nd life applications will be a niche; recycling and reprocessing will play an important role at the end of a battery product's life as customers in all sectors expect best performance 📌 Recycling is complex and not yet standardized, overcapacity is expected in the EU, but with little know-how; we can assume that the cost of battery cells will have to be increased in the future due to recycling, which will affect the attractiveness of the technologies; with the greatest negative impact on LFP, as the recycling of LFP is complex and the recycled raw materials are of low value 📌 the European gigafactories are starting operations, but initially see themselves as (fast) followers of the established suppliers => Battery production remains a challenge 📌 CO2 footprint of Li-Ion batteries is decreasing further to already <30kg CO2 / kWh with using renewable energy     Further I had the honor to lead a session for "battery application" together with Jörg Huslage with four interesting presentations 1️⃣ "Premium Platform Electric (PPE): development of superior charging performance" by Bernhard Rieger 2️⃣ "Battery-in-the cloud for modelbased adaptive control strategies" by Dr. Gerald Rämisch 3️⃣ "Safety Requirements of Stationary Energy Storage Systems for the North American Market" by Juergen Boeck 4️⃣ "Application Driven Differences in Design and Operation of Large-Scale Batteries" by Susanne Lehner 🙏 Thanks to all participants, speakers and organizers for the great event! #Battery #cell #fev

My learning from the post of Albert Pujol is, that unfortunately companies in the #automotiveindustry do not fully understand, what the potentials of #artificialintelligence could be specifically in operational areas of their businesses. Current discussions and informations are circulating almost entirely around Generative AI and LLM's. Generative AI is just one (important) part within the world of AI. Other topics like Deep Learning, Machine Learning, NLP etc. are (almost) being left out. And I agree with Albert Pujol: what are 10.000€ to 30.000€ worth compared to the potential benefits that can be created? AI-based digital assistants (Digital Colleagues) can also be a solution, which does not require a 'big investment' and can make a huge difference on improving performance. You need an example from operations? 60% cut in throughput time (cutting the the time, where no value has been added to the product) 50% cut in work-in-progress (means 'inventory' - means 'improving cash') 110% increase of value added time in production process => liquidity/cash improvement Overall result: cutting the number of extra shifts less temporarily workers needed => EBITDA-Improvement Do you need more? VW+XPENG JV + VW+RIVIAN JV = CARIAD OS #XPENG for China Market Volkswagen is deepening cooperation with Chinese startup Xpeng in terms of platform and 👉software development👈 for its electric vehicles. Volkswagen Group China Technology Company and CARIAD China are developing an electronic 👉architecture in cooperation with Xpeng. Schaeffler Vitesco merger completed 🤝 Schaeffler AG has successfully completed the merger with Vitesco Technologies Group AG that was announced almost a year ago. From now on, the Schaeffler Group will operate under the uniform corporate brand “Schaeffler”. Klaus Rosenfeld, CEO of Schaeffler AG, said: “With the completion of the merger with Vitesco today, Schaeffler is entering a new chapter in its corporate history. Despite the challenging environment, the complex transaction was successfully completed according to plan in less than a year. Georg F. W. Schaeffler, family shareholder and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Schaeffler AG said: “Schaeffler and Vitesco are stronger together. The merger lays the foundation for Schaeffler AG to continue its profitable growth trajectory in the future. On a pro-forma basis for 2023, the combined company will have consolidated annual sales of around 25 billion euros, will employ around 120,000 people at over 250 locations and will have more than 100 production facilities worldwide. In the new setup going forward, the Schaeffler Group will divide its business activities into four focused divisions with leading positions in each of their respective markets: E-Mobility, Powertrain & Chassis, Vehicle Lifetime Solutions and Bearings & Industrial Solutions. In addition, the Schaeffler Group divides its business into four regions – Europe, Americas, Greater China and Asia/Pacific – which will continue to be managed as before. Schaeffler expects that the merger with Vitesco will lead to revenue and cost synergies with an envisaged EBIT impact of 600 million euros annually. The synergies will be implemented gradually. The full synergy potential is expected to be reached for the first time in 2029. It was a great pleasure to discuss the development of the Chinese car market with my colleague Jun JIN and Burkhard Riering, editor in chief of Automobilwoche, at our webcast session “From China - with love?”. Once again, it has become obvious how dynamic and innovative the Chinese market is. The numerous new brands popping up like mushrooms speak a clear language. At the same time, the uncompromising growth strategy to conquer market share is currently reaching its limits in China. Soon we will see consolidation. However, this is no reason for European OEMs to sit back and relax. The existing overcapacities will keep prices under pressure. Chinese OEMs will not be deterred from their path to Europe either. But they will probably focus more on co-operations and alliances in order to produce locally for local - whether brownfield or greenfield. European manufacturers should take advantage of the market momentum and continue on their chosen path of accelerated and agile product development. When the VDA, the cause of the issue, realizes that the fire sales have begun and they only ever stood in the way of change. Well documented: continued poor judgement and mismanagement of historic proportions. And we all know it when we look. VDA and German politics are all complicit in the ongoing mismanagement of the fossil auto industry. #digitalmobility

I think that the German machine tool industry has done a remarkable job in successfully managing the technology transition in automotive, navigating the supply chain crisis, capturing opportunities from sustainable energy generation and defending its strong market position in the US. All this happening at the same time! However, there are some less favorable developments, too: German players have lost market share in volume segments (esp. turning, presses), while traction to conquer India as a key future market has also suffered. Means that companies should use the current slowdown to implement strategic and operational countermeasures!

I am excited to share a new report with the World Economic Forum on advancing ADAS and autonomous driving, co-authored with my colleagues Nikolaus S. Lang, Dr. Markus Hagenmaier, Paul Jordan! Some highlights: //1 Firms and institutions have so far failed to explain ADAS; <5% of drivers understand what different systems can do and how liability works //2 Consumers value additional comfort, safety and better use of time, while over 50% of consumers are worried about system reliability //3 The more automation the system provides, the less trust/willingness to use expressed by users //4 L2+ systems bring great convenience and 75% of users keep it engaged on highways - but it may also take away attention and it takes 10-14 sec. to take back over //5 Conversely, 46% of users feel they had to pay more attention when the system engaged vs manual driving. All of these need to be addressed to accelerate the growth of ADAS.
