As #Germany phases out coal, and energy demand continues to rise, the flexible capacity mechanism launching in 2028 will be key to ensuring energy security. The Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz (#BMWK) is looking to adopt a hybrid model, combining centralised and decentralised elements. 🔊The launch of latest version of 2025 CCPI - Climate Change Performance Index, co-authored by Germanwatch e.V., NewClimate Institute, and Climate Action Network International. 💡It assesses and compare the #climate performance of 63 countries & EU, which together account for over 90% of global GHG emissions, across four categories: Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions (40%), #RenewableEnergy (20%), #EnergyUse (20%) and #ClimatePolicy (20%). 🎙️𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 ➡️  1️⃣𝗡𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 in all categories to achieve an overall very high rating, so top 3-ranks are still vacant – no country is 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝟭.𝟱°𝗖. 2️⃣𝗗𝗲𝗻𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸 remains the 𝘁𝗼𝗽-𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 but falls short of an overall very high rating. 3️⃣𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 in almost every high-emitting country. The G20 is particularly responsible for climate mitigation, as its members account for over 75% of world’s GHG emissions. 🟠U.K. jumps up to 6, due to coal phase-out & government’s pledge against new licences for fossil fuel projects. 🟡𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗞𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗮 (63rd), 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗮 (64th), & 𝗦𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶 𝗔𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗮 (66th) remain in 𝗚𝟮𝟬’𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘀𝘁-𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀, with an overall very low rating. 6️⃣EU performance ⏭️ 🟢The 𝗘𝗨 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁, to 17th & has an overall medium ranking. 🔵Sixteen EU countries are among high & medium performers, with 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸 (4th) & 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 (5th) leading the overall ranking. 🎉📣Austria has announced a National Carbon Management Strategy! In a joint collaboration, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry for Climate Action have unveiled a national strategy for carbon management, following the indications included in the Commission's Industrial Carbon Management Strategy. The Strategy includes a plan for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR). In a first stage, Austria aims to assess and regulate the reduction of hard-to-abate emissions with CCS technologies. Subsequently, Austria will seek to make their strategy a reality by implementing a concrete plan to effectively reduce emissions through CCS. Austria is just another addition to the list of Member States that are starting to see that there can be #NoNetZeroWithoutCCS, but there's still a long way to go. Direct Air Capture (#DAC) is not the scalable solution to carbon removal that we need, and the United Nations advises against it. Due to the many drawbacks and risks of DAC, the UN’s climate body (#UNFCCC) has argued against the use of it as a meaningful way to remove emissions from our atmosphere. See the full report here: https://lnkd.in/egW3E-jV The main limitations are as follows: ❌ Scalability: Current DAC technologies are not easily scalable to capture emissions from all sources globally, particularly smaller-scale industrial and power generation facilities. ❌ Energy Intensive: The capture and storage processes require significant energy input, potentially offsetting some of the emissions reductions achieved. ❌ Cost: Implementing DAC technologies is expensive, making it challenging to incentivise widespread adoption, especially for industries with tight profit margins. ❌ Storage Risks: There are uncertainties and risks associated with the long-term storage of captured CO2 underground, including the potential for leaks and environmental impacts. ❌ Limited Utilisation: The range of economically viable applications is currently limited, constraining its potential impact on emissions reduction. ❌ Environmental Concerns: There are many concerns about the overall environmental impact of DAC, including potential leakage of stored CO2 and the energy-intensive nature of the process. Also, building vast machines to try and help the environment seems counter-intuitive. ❌ Technological Development: Further research and development is needed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of DAC technologies, further delaying its effectiveness, as well as to address associated environmental and safety concerns. ❌ Time: The process is timely, often resulting in a timespan of many years until a removal order is fulfilled. Due to the points above, it would not be surprising if the #EU, and other countries, would not allow such practices to be allowed under future legislation. However, there is still hope for rapid, measurable, permanent and safe carbon removal! The main point of the EU's mandate remains that of obtaining an "ambitious and balanced" agreement at Cop 29, to be held on 11-22 November in Baku, Azerbaijan. The deal should still hold out hope of maintaining global temperatures within 1.5°C of pre-industrial levels in the "light of the best available science", according to the EU position. 📢 Last week The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) confirmed that both Verra's Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Architecture for REDD+ Transactions (ART) program met the rigorous Core Carbon Principles (#CCPs). Proud to be one of the members of the group that helped create these principles, can’t wait to see more and more standards to be aligned with them. Tackling #Greenwashing in #Mining Finance    The term "greenwashing" in the mining finance sector has become a real issue. But the European Supervisory Authorities (EBA, EIOPA, and ESMA) have stepped up to the plate, providing a comprehensive guide to understanding and combating greenwashing in the mining finance sector.   They have published comprehensive reports (see links below) addressing this issue, which outline a high-level understanding of greenwashing and involves inflating #sustainability claims, such as propose a coordinated approach to tackle it. The aim is to ensure that financial market participants, especially those in the raw materials sector, provide fair, clear, and accurate sustainability information.    Our key takeaways!
