We should #strive to ensure that no one #perceives us as a #repository for #negativity. Our Mental Wellbeing Today, I had an experience that reminded me of the subtle, yet powerful ways aggression can impact our wellbeing. Rushing to Bangalore airport, I arrived just late enough that I was met with a stern refusal to check in my bag. A minor delay, but the exchange that followed was charged with frustration. The supervisor, visibly irritated, used harsh words and with that transferred his stress to me. From that point on, I found myself spiraling, becoming irritable, critical, and disconnected from everything and everyone around me. One small act of aggression set off a ripple effect in my mind, clouding my whole evening and disturbing my sense of balance. This experience led me to reflect on how easily someone else’s aggression can “jump” onto us, disturbing our mental state. This in fact is called the “emotional contagion” , a phenomenon where negative emotions spread like wildfire if we aren’t careful. This was his “monkey” that jumped on my shoulder and I had to make a conscious effort to stop carrying it around and passing it on. Here’s what I did to break the chain I acknowledged that I was feeling frustrated and identified its source. This simple act of recognizing my feelings allowed me to start separating myself from the emotion. Instead of replaying the negative interaction, I consciously refocused my mind on something positive. Like writing this post and thinking how to articulate the experience. I reminded myself that my day is more than this one incident. Shifting my focus to other things helped reduce the weight of the moment. Mental wellbeing requires conscious effort, especially when navigating difficult moments. The challenge isn’t to avoid stress or negative interactions entirely but to develop the skill to recognize and manage their impact on us. Our mental health depends on how well we manage our minds and reactions, not just on the world around us. I have observed 'Social norms' are built on blending in as opposed to standing out. Nodding a 'yes' is often easier than sharing one's point of view. And there is usually a risk in being ourselves especially around people who judge based on preconceived notions. Hence, people at work or in a given culture/ society/ community/ family start to behave just like the other and continue living in eco chambers ( An echo chamber is 'an environment where a person only encounters information or opinions that reflect and reinforce their own') The biggest fallacy is behaviours & mindsets we observe is what we believe to be desirable. Even if non conducive, attitudes are copied and internalised. Therefore the only antidote is... -Authenticity - Being our true self - Embracing vulnerability and - Transparency This keeps us from following a herd. -How do you keep your authentic self in action as a leader? Suhani, Hullas and I were travelling to Pune on Friday for some work. With some idealism, she said - we should stop just working for our goal-sheet. Good to hear these lofty, idealistic, sharp things from young talent! She took a stance, which is nice. It's good to double click on the thought - 1. Goals define your priorities for the year, so they serve a really important purpose. The way i am interpreting her statement is, don't just work on the targets, work on the process, solve it sustainably. Just working for targets will mean taking short cuts, errors in judgements and so on. It may also push for tactical intelligence which is great though. 2. But do solve problems beyond your goal sheet. This comes from an idealistic space but what the hell! Goal sheets are not sacrosanct, talk to your manager to add it in later or not. Idealism here across the board! 3. Do point no. 2 without dropping the ball on point no. 1. Goalsheets are aligned with org priorities, they hold higher priority.

Snakes & Ladders: A Board Game or Life Journey 🎲✨ I had a conversation with my Yoga Guru, Adam, about a profound idea I came across in a book by #SwamiVivekananda. The message was simple yet powerful: It is our privilege to serve or help someone else. 🌍 The truth is, nature supports everyone, and our contribution, however well-intentioned, is often minuscule in the grand scheme of things. The real beauty of giving and serving is what it does to us — it humbles us, teaches us grace, and keeps us grounded. Then Adam made a beautiful comparison, likening it to the classic Snakes & Ladders game. 🐍🎲 We’ve all enjoyed playing this game, but its origin is deeply spiritual, symbolizing the path to enlightenment. 🌟 * Every time you do something good, with pure intent, you're rewarded with a ladder—an unexpected grace that lifts you higher in life. 🌿✨ * Every time you fall into vices or negative habits, you're "punished" by a snake, pulling you back down. 🐍 Yet, even the snake is a lesson—teaching you humility and offering a chance to learn. The Ladder brings you joy and elevates you, while the Snake brings humility and reflection. 💡 The key lesson is this: There is very little we truly control. Stay unattached, keep taking the right actions, and be open to receiving what life offers. Birthday Wishes: I am overwhelmed with the stream of wishes ( still it is continuing ) wishing me many happy returns of the day. I am one who believes in individually thanking each one of you. I have worked in senior positions in four different organizations. Receiving stream of visitors on birthdays and participating in birthday celebrations hosted by different departments/units/locations was part of professional compulsions (including hosting). Getting so much of wishes from ex colleagues, client organizations, well wishers and some professionals trained by me in different locations ( 980+ programs and therefore approximately 25000 trainees), College/School friends, relatives and prospective clients. is really encouraging. My family members want me to hang up my boots but I have decided to take a fresh guard for my onward training journey. Due to personal life exigencies, I am shuttling between Chennai & Mumbai quite frequently. Some times, it becomes a blessing in disguise not only to my clients in Chennai/Mumbai but also to Bangalore/Hosur and Hyderabad clients. 40+ years of experience is a boon, especially in disseminating my experience by way of practical solutions to complex questions raised during/after the training programs. Now the demand is increasing for our special programs like "Dealing with Ambiguity", "Managerial Courage", "Organizational Agility" and "Dream Team" Programs when compared to vanilla programs on Team, Leadership, Communication, Decision Making etc., My guarantee for effectiveness of training programs is not because of audacity of our long experience but because of our willingness for continuous learning. Completed a course on brand strategy to prepare for an upcoming session on similar lines. Realised that every L&D person should learn about marketing and every marketing person should learn about L&D. They kind of compliment each other and have a lot of insights about TG, Customer voice, brand archetypes, brand positioning etc. After all our participants also are adult humans who relate to story telling, voice specific needs, hold beliefs and have a headspace where they hold learning as an experience.
