In our race toward decarbonization, the goal isn’t only to reduce emissions but also to avoid those that don’t need to exist in the first place. So here’s the fundamental question: how do we measure and value avoided emissions? Innovative approaches like #DigitalTwin and #Ecodesign allow us to anticipate and minimize impacts right from the design phase. For instance, by simulating the complete lifecycle of products, the digital twin reduces the need for physical testing. This limits resource use and avoids emissions, resulting in a reduced carbon footprint before the product even physically exists. 🔎 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 "𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬"? This is where the concept of Scope 4 comes in, as a complement to traditional scopes: Scope 1: Direct emissions from a company’s activities. Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased energy. Scope 3: Other indirect emissions, covering the entire value chain. Scope 4: Avoided emissions – those that never occurred thanks to the sustainable solutions and products we create. Beyond the footprint (the carbon impact we reduce), let’s also talk about our handprint: the positive impact we generate. Every sustainable choice, every innovation in ecodesign, helps increase this handprint and builds a greener ecosystem. 💡 Measuring avoided emissions is a challenge, but also a tremendous opportunity for companies to demonstrate their positive impact.
