During one cozy IT event, someone asked me if it's the right time to develop a game, given the tough times without big marketing budgets or a strong IP brand, and without a superstar team. Is there opportunity for a just good game to succeed in such a competitive market? The gaming industry is in the “darkness”. While the number of releases has increased, revenues remain unchanged and have shifted to corporations buying up ad space and pushing out indie developers. Players end up consuming bland, mass-advertised games. With the cost of player acquisition rising, it seems like the worst time to start game development. Throw your money out the window instead, you might say. But then again, hasn't it always been “darkness”? Maybe it's time to look at the situation differently. While big corporations have the money, their size makes them slow, which could be an advantage for agile, rule-free companies. Yes, many small startups are closing, perhaps a reaction to the COVID-19 boom, but if it leads to less competition with cookie-cutter games, isn’t that better for your unique product? I disagree that we are in “darkness”. With today’s technology accelerating development and so many market research tools available, if you want to create a truly good game, now could be the time. It won’t be easy, but it’s possible.May our gamedev future be bright and sunny! #GameDev

⚡️ Gaming Insights from the reports of last week (June 17 - June 21) 1️⃣ Games on Roblox has very poor retention according to Mobile/PC/Console standards. D1 is not exceeding 15% even for the best titles, and less than 1% of the users are staying after D30. That's the price you're paying for making content for a young audience, they're reactive and easily moving from one experience to another. However, the top 5% of games on Roblox do earn $7 per user in a year. And more than half get just $0,5 per user in a year. What can I say? The Roblox world is very different from the classic gaming market. Thanks to GameAnalytics! 2️⃣ PlayStation earned $830M on Steam in the past 4 years according to Video Game Insights The largest contributor is Helldivers II (34% of the overall revenue); Horizon: Zero Dawn & God of War are following (both have 13%). And when we look at the full picture it's not that much. Sony's Entertainment G&N business generated $29,4B only in the 2023 FY. It's 1-3% of the annual revenue, and this doesn't seem big at first glance, but for a mature business like PlayStation, this is a great addition. The interesting part is on the product level. Horizon: Zero Dawn earned about $120M on PC (out of overall $500M+) with the budget of the original game being rumoured $47M. A single port recouped the whole venture - and I'd bet that every company would want this for their title. 3️⃣ People do spend less money in games with toxic communities That's what the recent Nielsen & Take This, Inc. report tells. 21% of gamers spend less time in games where they experience harassment and hate language. 22% of male and 13% of female gamers also spend less on such games. While I can logically explain this, I'm curious if there is any direct correlation anybody has seen in their titles. It's hard to check it (because it takes years, and you're working on a game alongside the community), but I'd be glad to see a case study. Serbian Games Association has released a new report for 2023. What's particularly pleasing is that the industry is growing! Here are some highlights: - Total revenue exceeds 175 million euros; 150 in 2022 - The number of employees has doubled - from 1700 to 3400 - One of the reasons for the increase in the number of employees is a large number of gaming professionals and their families from Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus moved to Serbia last year - The number of studios, however, has not increased significantly - from 140 in 2022 to 150 in 2023 Link to the full report in the comments. #SGA #GameDevIndustry #Games #Gaming #GamesReport

Alright, another gaming industry report for the first half of 2024 has been recently published. Thanks, Konvoy. In 2024, the market is expected to reach 💲 1️⃣ 8️⃣ 9️⃣ billion, which is heftier than the COVID years. Moreover, with an annual increase of 💲 7️⃣ - 8️⃣ billion in revenue, this forecast looks pretty optimistic. 🔍 As a gaming startup, we were particularly interested in the investment landscape. Private market funding in gaming YTD has already surpassed that of all of 2023, which is encouraging. 💳 Early-stage funding is doing well, but late-stage funding is lagging. This is understandable. Those who can navigate this stage and gain investor trust through an ambitious product, promising metrics, or both will find it relatively easy to secure late-stage investments due to the abundant growth capital available. 💹 Don't fall into momentary pessimism over the fewer M&A deals. With so much cash on hand among strategists, this is clearly a temporary phenomenon. There's a great opportunity for startups aiming for late/growth stage in the next year or two. Public gaming companies hold 💲 3️⃣3️⃣ billion in cash and equivalents, so, as the report states: "a healthy M&A environment." Additionally, YouTube and LinkedIn introducing game strategy means the trend towards cross-platform is continuing, and games should not only launch as standalone apps. In summary, with the hope of no new geopolitical shocks and easing global tensions, the future of the gaming industry looks optimistic. For now, we give ourselves at Made on Earth Games a pat on the back for deciding to go cross-platform and build our own IP with a standout product for a wide audience. ⚡️ Gaming Insights from the reports of last week (June 10 - June 14) 1️⃣ Gaming companies laid off more people in 2024 than in full 2023. Layoffs keep being a heartbreaking reality of the industry we're working. 10,800 people lost their jobs in 2024 compared to 10,500 in 2023. I want to recommend everyone who is in search to check Amir Satvat's resources. And I wish all the talents will find a place to create further. 2️⃣ 74% of Russians are pirating games. Some of the revenue channels are going through Türkiye & Kazakhstan regions; some people do buy top-up cards to use in the US regions. But all in all, just for the Q1'24 by estimations, Russian gamers downloaded free games worth of $1,32B. That's a lot of money. The legal market exists too. It was valued at $550M in the same Q1'24. 3️⃣ Asia and MENA markets in 2023 were about half of the whole industry - Niko Partners Actually, it's 13 markets, which has such a big share (46,5%). Of course, you will find China, Japan, and South Korea among those. Niko Partners are positive about the future and predict that those 13 markets will grow to $97.1B in 2028 from the current $85.5B. The largest contributor to the pace will be India (+11,1% CAGR). It doesn't mean the actual numbers, though. I really wish everyone analyzed online poker properly. What happens in a typical gambling operator’s office when it’s time to analyze reports? Let’s say it’s an operator that has all the main verticals. Someone at the top opens a report, sees that online poker only accounts for 3% of the revenue structure, closes the report, and decides to further cut expenses for online poker. How does middle management react to this? Pretty much the same. Because numbers are stubborn and straightforward, they’re hard to argue with. If you see 3%, it’s tough to resist the urge to stop developing that direction. How does junior management feel about it? Under pressure from upper management and lacking a deep understanding of online poker, junior management also picks up on this negative trend and treats online poker with indifference. But if the company properly analyzed this vertical, things could change. Online poker isn’t just 3% of your company’s revenue structure. Yes, it’s not a major revenue driver, but it’s definitely a system builder. When a casino manager opens yesterday’s report, they see a new player who brought the company thousands of euros in revenue. The casino manager immediately feels proud, thinking how great it is that they made money for the company. But no one bothers to figure out where this player came from. I assure you, a significant number of new players in other verticals come precisely because of poker. A player might have been drawn to the platform because of an interest in online poker. They could have registered for a long tournament and opened a few casino games on the side to make the experience more enjoyable. And they might only open casino games while they’re also playing online poker. So, who’s the real hero here? Who actually brought the player in? If that player made a big deposit thanks to their interest in online poker and part of that deposit ended up in another vertical, in my view, that’s the credit of online poker. If we accurately identify the product preference of players and know the triggers that lead them to other product verticals, we’ll start seeing online poker in a completely different light. At least 50% of poker players venture into casinos and slots, but their product preference remains poker. And they come to the platform thanks to online poker events. So, poker is bringing you far more than just 3% — but indirectly. You might argue that this works the other way too, with someone coming for the casino and then transitioning to poker. Sure, it can happen, but you shouldn’t allow that. Effective, high-margin migration should go from poker to casino and sports, not the other way around. Because it takes 5 seconds to earn €1,000 in a casino, but it takes a year to earn €1,000 in online poker. Let’s keep fighting for online poker and not let the other verticals completely absorb it. I’ve got nothing against other verticals, I just consider myself an ambassador and defender of online poker. Thanks.

This is my first experience as a CMO and my first job in the gaming industry on the client side. For the past 7 months, we have been promoting League of Masters. From the very first weeks, it became clear that this project is not typical. Here are the challenges we’ve encountered: - Despite being a quality game, it's struggling to find its audience. - Media buying costs are rising, retention is falling, and Facebook tools are failing. - The mid-core genre transitioning into hardcore immediately dismisses a large part of the gaming audience, while we target the most solvent one (mid-core shows high revenue values in game dev reports for 2022-2023). - The need to make the game an esports discipline. - Working with bloggers not only on the "we paid - you did" scheme but also through an ambassador program. - The press doesn't want to write about "another battler," and we have to break through to them from ten different angles. How we are addressing these issues: - Testing audiences from competitors and different genres in media buying. Retention is growing, but so is the CPI. We are trying to identify where the higher quality audience is. Google Ads works worse for us than Facebook, and we will soon try TikTok Ads and Unity. - We are finding the mid-core audience through targeted bloggers and specialized press. - We've connected with several esports teams to gather feedback before launching the first tournaments. Not all feedback is free, research costs money. - We are bombarding thousands of small bloggers with emails, offering support and in-game goodies. Some are interested and start creating content. - With the press, not being able to meet in person, we network through social media and email, looking for direct contacts with journalists. This has resulted in a few good publications. Currently, my main task is to gather 10-20,000 wishlists to get featuring from Steam at launch and to form a core audience interested in the game. Additionally, we continue to seek out esports teams and gather their feedback. We have organically grown our Facebook group to 2,100 members and our YouTube channel to 780 subscribers. Soon, we plan to start paid influencer campaigns with the sole aim of adding the game to wishlists. Like this post if you find this interesting and I keep sharing!

I did a talk during Devcom in Cologne. So many young faces with "Student Tickets" (they made me feel a bit older) But honestly, I love Gen Z ❤️ Before my fellow industry veterans start grumbling... Let’s be real: We’ve had our time as the pioneers. We’ve seen the gaming world evolve in ways we couldn’t have imagined. Examples: 1. We REMEMBER the days of pixelated art. ↳ So we value how far the tech has come. 2. We KNOW what it’s like to build a game. ↳ So we value the craft and the hard work. 3. We SEE the new generation stepping in. ↳ And they’re bringing fresh energy & ideas. I could keep going... But the point is: We led the way, but now it’s Gen Z’s turn. They grew up with gaming as a way of life. ↳ It’s in their DNA. They dream big. They are fearless. They are creative. They are ready to push the boundaries. And I’m here for it. SO many of the students I met at Devcom are the future of the gaming industry. They’re the ones who will take what we started and run with it. The future of gaming is in good hands. Cheers to Gen Z. ⚡️ Gaming Reports - June 3 - June 7 (2024) 👉 Newzoo highlighted top-20 PC/Console games of April'24 by Revenue and MAU - Manor Lords (#5 in revenue ranking) and Content Warning (#12) had a very solid start. Fallout 76 made it to the top 20 with all transmedia efforts too. - Two out of 3 PlayStation new titles in top-20 by revenue are from Microsoft - Sea of Thieves and Grounded. - Fallout 4 had a huge comeback in an MAU rating. It wasn't in rating by Revenue, so I assume a lot of people just opened their catalog after watching a TV series. 👉 Sensor Tower (first one with data.ai (by Sensor Tower)!) shared a Q1'24 report on the Mobile market. Great as always. The report, I mean, not the status of the market. - The gaming market reached $20,3B on Mobile in Q1'24. It's Gross and without China Android stores. +2,9% YoY, but that's... a little behind non-gaming 19,4% growth. - MONOPOLY GO! was coronated as a top-grossing title in a single quarter with $770M. Previous record was set by Honor of Kings with $765M in Q2'21. - Spend on digital ads in gaming in Q1'24 in US & Canada felt by 19%. Won't expect those regions to grow massively in the future. 👉 Thanks to AppMagic I was able to check how the Mobile top by Revenue and Downloads looked like in May'24 - Dungeon Fighter Online Mobile had a very successful launch in China with $63,7M Net Revenue in less than 2 weeks only on iOS. - Solo Leveling: Arise was quite big with 18.2M downloads. - Aside from this, it's been quite stable. Next month I'd expect Squad Busters to a top-1 by downloads; but curious how high the game can jump by revenue. I was impacted by EA SPORTS pre-sale discounts and have bought the fresh new #EAFC25. Every year, the game has only slight updates that are enough to make me spend hours and hours in it for the whole year. This year was different, though. I bought the game just to be surprised with the new Rush game mode. This 5v5 mode is designed for quick, high-scoring action, replacing the Volta mode with something that’s both familiar and refreshingly new. The tweaks to the offside rule, smaller pitch, and the intense sprint for ball possession make it a unique and engaging experience for players who thrive on speed and strategy. Rush mode isn’t just a casual play option— it’s integrated into key parts of the game like Ultimate Team and Pro Clubs, which means it’s going to have a significant impact on how players approach their squads and strategies. ⚡️ Gaming Reports - May 20 - May 31 (2024) I'm back from my short yet very fulfilling vacation, and happy to share the main updates of the industry numbers of the last (two) weeks. 👉 Newzoo lowered the 2023 market forecast. Fair to say that the update changes the perception of what happened last year with the market growing 0,5% YoY instead of 2,6% YoY. The console market stayed flat (+0,3% YoY) instead of the previously forecasted 7,4% YoY growth. Mobile declined (-2,1% YoY vs. reported originally +0,8% YoY). PC is the only winner with 8,4% YoY growth compared to the 1,6% growth in the first report. Numbers are just numbers until you realize that 2023 was the year of the launch of Monopoly GO! and Honkai: Star Rail (both made it to the top 10 titles by revenue). There were tons of huge AAA releases on PC & Consoles. Platform holders managed to overcome the supply constraints, which boosted console sales. Despite all these factors we still see flat numbers. This worries me a little. Are we approaching a ceiling? 👉 Sony shared a Game & Network services segment update, in which they confirmed that PlayStation 5 is the most profitable console in their history. There were 97 million monthly active consoles in April 2024, and half of them were PlayStation 4. So the old-gen is still there, and people play on it (you can't ignore almost 50 million users, right?). Of course, PS5 users are much more engaged (63% of playtime is contributed by them). And they also pay more (PS4 LTD Spend for the first 4 years is $580; PS5 is far ahead with $731). Last - but not least - GAAS & annual releases have 51-53% of overall PS Store revenue for the last fiscal years. 👉 Circana numbers are telling us that the US market declined in April 2024 by 3% YoY. That's after 3 months of growth by this indicator this year. Two important things - the mobile segment grew in April by 12%. I haven't heard of mobile being the growth driver for a while, so it does feel good. And Stellar Blade - we do have a new leader in charts. That's a big achievement for SHIFTUP which never released a PC/Console title before. Congratulations! ✨𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐕 𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐭 *𝐥𝐚𝐲* 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧! ✨ Since we recovered from the Game Industry Conference, it’s time to bring the final episode of the series! We’ve covered all the essential CV sections, but what about the overall layout? Should you go for a specific style or keep it minimal? Are there any golden rules that apply to all CVs? 🥇 Well, the answer is … IT DEPENDS. While there are no strict rules, there are myths around that worth debunking 🤔 📃 Forget the one-page rule It’s a myth that is still alive among people. Just imagine being an expert in your field and having some non-skippers in your experience, but you have to cram it into only one page. You shrink fonts and sections just to fit that one page, making your CV unreadable and unappealing.   It’s understandable that when you gain experience and skills, but also do extra stuff related to the industry, your CV will lengthen. It’s totally ok! However, remember that you should verify if the content put in your resume is still relevant. That matter was a part of my previous post regarding the experience section. 🖼️ What about the aesthetic? Honestly? It’s not as important as you may think. Many people, even in creative jobs, are using their LinkedIn profile in a .pdf file. As you know, they're quite minimalistic and may not fit the ones seen online, BUT they win with the readability and clearness. If you want to add your own flair to it, it’s good to look at the structure of what LinkedIn generates - it’s a good starting point! Sure, a well-designed resume can catch an eye, but don’t do too much - CVs with many colors and images can be unreadable and distract from the whole goal of the CV, which is to be 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞. That can especially occur when you use striking colors or rich graphics - you can go overboard with the amount of extra stuff and, at the end, get the worse result. The safest bet is to do something clean and readable, with some air on pages and a few colorful accents 🎨 📏Does section order matter? CV is your card, so benefit from that - even with the layout! Generally, it’s good to showcase the most important things first, like a brief intro or the experience. However, it's different when you are changing industries. Then, besides the introduction, it’s good to show your education, skills and maybe showcase a valued certificate in your field. 📚Don’t forget the GDPR clause! If you’re applying to a EU-based company, put the GDPR clause at the end of the CV. You give consent to processing the data and then the recruiter is allowed to message you if you shared your resume online. Poland has done its part, becoming the third EU country to reach the required signature threshold for the #StopDestroyingVideoGames campaign. This initiative is vital for protecting the rights of gamers and developers. It aims to ensure that games remain playable even after official support ends, preventing them from becoming obsolete. This includes advocating for offline modes, community server support, and opposing restrictive regulations that could hinder modding, archiving, or extending the lifespan of games. The campaign also highlights the importance of preserving video games as a part of our cultural heritage, ensuring they are not lost due to discontinued support or sales. While Poland has achieved its goal, we still need ~750,000 more signatures across the EU to reach the 1 million mark, with Germany and the Netherlands currently closest to their respective thresholds.
