New Work! Äripäev is an Estonian business-orientated publishing house that's been around since 1989. Main and most trusted business magazine/portal in Estonia. As with any project, big or small, we started with several face-to-face meetings with the client’s team to better understand their business and technical needs. Then we took time to reach out to current and potential Äripäev content consumers for interviews. By doing this we would get insights into how they use Äripäev in their day-to-day and work towards an experience that better caters to their needs. A deliberate UX/UI design decision was to not change too much – at least visually – so that existing users wouldn’t all of a sudden get confused and lost. What we did set out to do, however, was to vastly improve the typography and legibility of articles. Another challenge that we tackled, was to showcase and accommodate Äripäev’s “sibling-websites” in the main menu since this was lacking in the previous version of the website. The same navigation and content UI logic we defined is reused throughout all these websites. This was made easy by the using of scalable components which – by allowing dynamic changes – give the flexibility and reusability needed for the editors of the respective websites. This way the layout and design system logic enables the editors to focus on the content creation without having to worry about technical hurdles. What connects these terms: CRM, Senior Developer, Agile, Scalable? All these terms are slowly becoming useless as they lose any real meaning. They're overused, used as shortcuts, or simply for marketing and sales tactics. Client Relation Manager - people use the term CRM for any IT system used in a company, whether it's for resource management, warehouse or order handling, or even for handling email campaigns. Agile - I'm starting to lose track of what this word really means amidst job postings for "agile and energetic teams." Is it related to project management frameworks? Rarely. Scalable - "We have 1000 users and still no performance issues" - this is how overengineering is justified, or the claim that the application is truly ready for heavy traffic. And the best one: Senior Developer. I've seen CVs of developers with 3 years of experience in 1 project and nothing more, yet they proudly claim the title of Senior Developer. But their current employer could bill the client at the Senior Developer rate because of it. I conducted a job interview for another company for a Ruby Senior Developer position with a person with just 1 (yes, one!) year of experience. And this person was cleared for such an interview by the HR filter. Perhaps because she claimed to have "2 years of experience in conversations with developers." I won't try to formulate a complete definition of a Senior Developer. But one thing I know for sure - I wouldn't call a developer a Senior Developer if they are afraid of working with Legacy Codebase or cannot understand how valuable for self-improvement they can be. Writing greenfield applications from scratch is enjoyable; it allows you to apply new technologies and try fresh and innovative approaches. But mainly, it allows us to see how our juniors handle things when their actions aren't burdened by the entire "legacy" project. The real magic happens when we have to deal with code that has "been through the mill." Code that users interact with daily. Code that generates revenue. And code that requires expertise and thorough analysis of "pros and cons" when considering a refactor idea. This is where an ambitious developer can truly spread their wings and prove that they deserve the title of senior. So, how do we handle legacy projects to derive enjoyment from them and ensure that we possess that senior quality? Navigating the Complexities of Startups: How unbaked models ruin the end customer experience. Backstory After hearing promising reviews from top travel industry leaders about a new startup in visa processing, I decided to give it a try for my personal travel. The company boasted an innovative app and user interface, and I was eager to experience a seamless visa application process. A Promising Start On May 21, 2024, I began my journey with the startup’s app. The initial steps, from filling out forms to reaching the payment gateway, were impressively smooth. I was confident in the app’s capabilities and pleased with the predicted visa delivery date of June 6, 2024. The First Sign of Trouble A few days into the process, the app requested a set of documents. However, confusion quickly arose. Multiple representatives started reaching out to me for the same documents, which they were unable to retrieve from the app. Despite sending the required files multiple times, they got lost in the shuffle. Only after several email exchanges and intervention from senior staff was the receipt of my documents confirmed. Assurances and Delays Throughout this period, I repeatedly asked if my visa would arrive on time. Each time, I was assured it would. However, on June 6, 2024, I was asked for additional documents, and the timeline was adjusted to June 12, 2024. These documents were provided – thankfully this time it was through mail so that no confusion arose. Silence and Frustration Since then, communication has been non-existent. My application status remains marked as "waiting for document uploads," despite my numerous follow-ups. The startup has failed to address my concerns, and the callback feature in the app no longer results in any response. On 20th of June, I am still being given the date as 12th of June , I will get my visas. Reasons: The Gap Between Expectations and Reality This experience underscores a crucial lesson for startups even for our: if your model isn't fully refined and integrated with necessary requirements, do not set unrealistic expectations. Clear and consistent communication is vital to maintaining user trust and ensuring a positive user experience. In the rapidly evolving world of startups, it's essential to manage user expectations and provide reliable, transparent service. My journey where I am still stuck highlights the importance of not only innovative technology but also effective management and communication channels so that the end customer is not left high and dry. Finally, the second quarter has ended, and we are pleased to share its results with you, as well as our plans for the future. Now the MC Pay app has become even more user-friendly than ever before. What have changed: 1. Available payment methods info Now, users who have passed the KYC and have a balance of </= $0 will see payment methods and will be able to view information about them while clicking on the “Withdraw” button. 2. New referral program Each user will have a unique link generated, via which they can invite other creators to the network. After successfully connecting a channel with an income of $3,000 or more, the user who invited this channel will get a $500 bonus. 3. Impressive redesign of our app We’ve adapted the MC Pay app for large screens and changed "Balance" block. Switching accounts was moved into a block with a general MC Pay balance, because experience shows that people mainly use only one account 4. Expresses We simplified the naming, reduced everything to Expresses. Now it’s both the name of the feature and the old Credits. Despite MC Pay's grand updates, we are always in the process of transformation. We're setting ourselves a lot of really cool product challenges in the new quarter. Among them are: - Auto-confirmation of transactions of the "Expresses" section - Auto-withdrawal of funds as part of “Early Payouts” subscriptions - Creation of new toggles between templates on the output screen As for long-term plans, we hope to have a release of our payment system soon. Despite the challenges, we are already preparing for this incredible change!

Vadim Cebotari - Frontend Architect at Simpals When it comes to technology development in a company, it's hard to overestimate the contribution of those who stood at the roots. Vadim Cebotari, one of the first Frontend Developers at Simpals, evolved from a small team to Frontend Architect. Today, he leads an entire team of talented specialists. In this interview, Vadim shares how he came to the company, the challenges he faced and his vision for the future of Simpals. 🚀👨‍💻 When and how did you join Simpals? It was back in 2015. At that time, I was looking for a change, and Simpals had built a reputation as the "Google of Moldova," which intrigued me. I started as a Frontend Developer, and now I’m a Frontend Architect. 👥💡 How big is your team? Can you describe them in a few words? When I joined, there was no structure like there is now. Back then, we were a two-man team - I worked together with the Backend Developer at that time (and current CTO), Calarasanu Andrei. Today, I manage a team of 17 people, including 3 team leads. As a team, we’re highly efficient, as all of the guys are responsible, and we work in symbiosis. 🖥️💬 What have been some of the biggest challenges you've faced in your career? During the pandemic we had to transition to remote work. While we adapted quickly, it was difficult at times because I’ve always found it much easier to ask questions and discuss ideas face-to-face. That in-person interaction boosts productivity and helps solve problems faster. 📱🎯 Is there a particular achievement you are especially proud of? Yes, definitely. We recently revamped map.md, point.md, stiri.md, and afisha.md. Revamping stands for renovating the interface - everything a user sees when they open a web page and interact with: buttons, banners and animations. We have also been working on modernizing the 999 App, making it more user-friendly and feature-rich. Our 999 App is something I am particularly proud of. 🌱💡 How do you see Simpals in the next 5 years? Simpals will grow into a more mature organization while still holding onto the creativity and agility. We'll continue to modernize our products and introduce cutting-edge solutions for our users.
