Making Agrifood Systems Work for Women 💪 Still, women all over the world, lack equal access to rights, representation and resources - whether as farmers, processors, policy makers, activists, traders or consumers. 🚺 Last week, we had an exciting panel discussion at KfW Berlin with WWF and Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) on the question on how to achive gender equity in Agrifood systems. In this discussion, it became abundantly clear that transformative approaches are not just possible but essential − even in fragile contexts − to close the gender gap in agrifood systems and to achieve #ZeroHunger. ♂️⚖️♀️ Gender approaches have been around for half a century already and it is time to really practice what we preach. 🌍☕ Fairtrade International has raised concerns that many smallholder farmers might be cut off from EU markets—not due to deforestation practices, but because of challenges in data management and compliance with the new EUDR. This could have serious implications for their livelihoods. A coalition of coffee organizations has called for urgent intervention to prevent unintended consequences for smaller producers. On the one hand, the pattern of large-scale intensive pig farming has led to the emergence and population expansion of pig-enriched Salmonella; on the other hand, globalized trade exchanges concerning pigs have similarly increased the probability of global transmission of pig-enriched S. enterica serovars. In addition, with the use of antibiotics in the process, more and more pig-enriched Salmonella has obtained new antibiotic resistance genes, including many of the previously reported human-specific antibiotic resistance genes. The impact of the development model of modern agriculture on pig-enriched Salmonella is comprehensive and far reaching." Exciting news from the yearly international #INSECTA conference in Potsdam! 🌱 Our researcher Dr. Sonja Floto-Stammen and Natalia Naranjo Guevara from NGN - New Generation Nutrition presented insights on the #valuecreation of insects as an ingredient in dog food. Here are the summary and key takeaways: 📚 We conducted a comprehensive analysis of #marketing claims on insect-based dogfood. 💡 We identified a research gap (lack of scientific evidence) in the functional positioning of insect-based dog food (such as hypoallergenic). 🚀 We see strategic marketing opportunities focusing on the humanization of dogs with: taste, variety, and the most trendy alternative protein for dogs. #Water is the essence of life, a fact we all know. But what is Merz Lifecare doing to protect this vital resource, both globally and locally? In 2022 we started a cooperation with WWF Deutschland to launch an important freshwater initiative in #Tanzania, aiming to preserve the Great Ruaha River. This river is a lifeline for half a million people and countless animals, including lions and giraffes. However, the Great Ruaha is unfortunately experiencing increasingly frequent droughts, with water flow ceasing for up to six months each year! Our project focused on improving local water management while working closely with the community. Here's what’s been accomplished so far: 💧670 individuals trained in responsible water resource management 🏞 54 vulnerable water sources identified, with 30 already protected 💦 18 key water users (large enterprises and small farmers) engaged across the table on sustainable water use 💬 workshops with 60 stakeholders from seven localities to explore alternative income sources beyond irrigated agriculture 🐟 120 people trained in beekeeping and aquaculture   After three years, this project ends for us and is now transitioning into the capable hands of WWF Tanzania and local communities. We're proud of the tangible progress that's been made and grateful to everyone who has contributed to this initiative. Locally, here in #Germany, we're also committed to water conservation. As a company, we use water in our production processes and in the use of our products, particularly in bath additives. 💧We're dedicated to reducing water consumption during manufacturing and 🌱ensuring our formulations are as biodegradable as possible to minimize groundwater impact. At the invitation of Silvia Bender, State Secretary at German's Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), and the Ambasada Niemiec w Warszawie, we participated in a meeting focused on supporting the role of women in sustainable agriculture. Silvia Bender presented findings from Germany’s 2023 study on the living conditions of women in rural areas and introduced a program supporting female entrepreneurship in agriculture. Małgorzata Bojańczyk shared information on ongoing initiatives, including the first Polish study on the living and social conditions of women in agriculture. This international gathering provided an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences with representatives from other countries that promote the professional and personal development of women in agriculture. Sharing experiences and insights that support gender equality and sustainable development among women in agriculture is a primary goal of the Agro Woman initiative. We also discussed food system transformations, structural changes in agriculture and rural areas, and European integration, addressing key topics such as the priorities of Common Agricultural Policy reform, EU competitiveness, the internal market, and the importance of implementing innovations and sustainable practices in agriculture. https://lnkd.in/duYKib6j #woman #sustainability #agriculture #equality

🐝🌾Preserving #biodiversity in agricultural areas is crucial for food security and many important ecosystem services, like pollination, water regulation and soil fertility. However, biodiversity continues to decline in Europe at an alarming rate, especially in agricultural regions. Together with project partners from 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝟰𝗚𝗜, adelphi has engaged with German farmers themselves to identify challenges and develop effective solutions. In the most recent policy brief, presented to members of the Bundestag and Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft , results from an exchange process with farmers in Baden-Württemberg and Thuringia were reported. [Press Release] Himalayan Agroecology Initiative: Pioneering Sustainable Food Systems in the Himalayas Bonn/Hamburg/Delhi/Kathmandu/Thimphu, 11th September 2024: In a landmark effort to scale up sustainable agriculture in the Himalayan region, a multi-stakeholder consortium, the Himalayan Agroecology Initiative (HAI), has been set up aimed at strengthening the resilience of farmers in India, Bhutan and Nepal against the climate crisis. This multi-stakeholder initiative, backed by the global think tank World Future Council and IFOAM – Organics International, a global network of organic farmers, processors, retailers, academics and researchers, will enhance biodiversity, support sustainable agricultural practices and foster durable value chains. The HAI partners will develop comprehensive country roadmaps for the three countries through a series of consultations, culminating in a national consultation in the respective capitals later this year. The final roadmaps will be rolled out at an international conference in 2025. “Establishing agroecology and sustainable food systems has been the core spirit of IFOAM – Organics International, which we are excited to upscale with the World Future Council and our partners in the Himalayas to establish food systems that are resilient to climate change and beneficial to smallholders’ livelihoods,” said Ravi R. Prasad, Executive Director of IFOAM – Organics International. The call for proposals aims to encourage submissions, fostering cooperative research projects between agricultural and nutritional science research institutions in Germany and their counterparts in Sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, which contribute to the research and establishment of innovative, resilient, regionally adapted, and sustainable agricultural and food systems. The main objective is to improve the nutritional situation of the population in the target regions by providing sufficient high-quality food. The results of the research projects should in the long term contribute to food security and food sovereignty in the target regions. 📢 New DFG research group FORMULA at the University of Giessen and ZALF is dedicated to the study of agroforestry systems 🌳🌾. https://lnkd.in/eM2kijVa Agroforestry, the combination of trees or shrubs on agricultural land, offers numerous benefits for ecosystems and people. Over the next four years, different working groups within FORMULA will use digital technologies to analyze the impact of these cropping systems on biodiversity, water balance, soil quality and pollination services. The research will take place on experimental plots in Brandenburg and Hesse, where rows of trees were already planted in 2017. What did civil society and frontline leaders think of the progress made at the recent Bonn Climate Conference? 💭 For Fabrício Muriana, co-founder of Instituto Regenera, it was an important moment to see negotiations on agriculture picking up following the stalemate in discussions at COP28, and meet with Brazilian negotiators. 💭 “The Bonn Climate Conference is not just about technicalities but about geopolitics and power.” said Sena ALOUKA, food sovereignty activist from Togo and Chair of the Climate Change Working Group of AFSA, “For many developing countries and civil society leaders from the Global South this is an important fora to raise our concerns. Food systems need to be higher on the priorities for climate action.” 💭 Proscovier Nnanyonjo Vikman, Chairperson Climate Action Network Uganda, said her highlight was observing the negotiations between the G77 + China and the EU and USA, which sometimes grew heated while finding consensus on issues. 💭 Rosinah Mbenya, country coordinator for PELUM, Kenya, was keenly following discussions on gender and protein diversification.
