The latest #payments roadtrip hits #Switzerland. Delighted to see a Fiserv unattended payment terminal alighting the train at Gare de Genève. Worldline who purchased SIX Payment Services in 2018, and Nexi Group appeared most often at Point of sale in my retail experiences though some Nexi terminals still show the Nets brand (who purchased Concardis prior to the Nexi M&A). SumUp and to a lesser extent myPOS did appear on some shop decals particularly for smaller businesses. TWINT is the local payment method to watch. Accepted online as well as instore it has become increasingly important in the #Swiss market with over 70% of the population having an account. It was interesting to see in the one location that I saw a minimum card spend they called out they didn’t have Twint while in a supermarket and on a local online store it was the first payment method offered. The latest Swiss Payment Monitor reports that for the first time mobile payments, which includes Twint, took the top spot among payment methods. PostFinance a division of Swiss Post also offer a local online payment method that can be used by their 2.5m account holders (or rather 2 flavours that will be consolidated as PostFinance Pay). Previously they also had a debit card 'Postcard' that could only be used for local instore purchases but their new PostFinance card is also a Debit Mastercard. Like some other recent trips, having some cash available to reward good service is a good idea as I didn’t have the opportunity to leave a tip by card. If picking up cash from the ATM in the airport wait until post baggage claim as the first ATM charged 3.95 CHF withdrawal fee while the UBS ATMs were free. Bordered by 4 Eurozone countries there were references to acceptance of #EUR in several businesses and I'm sure lots of #DCC transactions in the market. At the airport I did spot a reverse currency ATM for the first time which did seem like a good idea. Great to see one of my favourite crisps Keogh's Farm (there are other crisps available) on the shelves. Would be a great taste of home. À bientôt.

💡 Last week European Payments Council published third version of Mobile Initiated Sepa (Instant) Credit Transfer and Interoperability Guidance. Below is few highlights from the guidance SEPA Instant Credit Transfers are gaining traction within the SEPA framework, with mobile channels anticipated to play a crucial role in their adoption. Retailers being increasingly interested in SCT-based payments for both in-store transactions and mobile commerce, viewing them as a complement to traditional card payments. Several European countries have already launched various solutions in this area, reflecting the growing momentum for instant payments. Mobile Initiated SEPA (Instant) Credit Transfers (MSCTs) represent a modern approach to digital payments, allowing users to initiate instant credit transfers directly from their mobile devices. 💡 MSCT Transaction Mechanics MSCTs encompass both SCT Inst (SEPA Credit Transfer Instant) and SCT (SEPA Credit Transfer) transactions initiated through mobile devices. These transactions utilize existing payment infrastructures in the inter-PSP (Payment Service Provider) space, focusing on interactions beyond this space, such as between the payer's mobile device and the point of interaction (POI). 💡 Modes of MSCT Transactions There are two primary modes of MSCT transactions based on how payment initiation data is exchanged: 💡 Payee-Presented Data: In this mode, the payee provides necessary data to the payer, either through direct presentation or prior sharing (e.g., P2P payments). This method is widely adopted for various payment contexts, particularly P2P and consumer-to-business (C2B) payments at physical points of sale (POI), often using QR codes. 💡 Payer-Presented Data: Here, the payer provides their identification data to the payee, which can be shared through proximity technology or manually entered. This mode is appealing for businesses wanting to offer enhanced customer experiences but faces challenges such as the need for compatible POI terminals and security concerns regarding data generation. 🌐 Instant Payments: The Future is Now, But Are Banks Ready? During our "Instant Payments—The Last Mile" conference earlier this week, it became clear that many questions remain about the Instant Payments Regulation (#IPR). According to this article, #instantpayments will make up 22% of global non-cash #transactions by 2028. Yet, only 25% of #banks are prepared to process them. Big changes are on the horizon for instant credit transfers in Europe. With the new Instant Payments Regulation (EU) 2024/886 now in force, Payment Service Providers in the EEA need to stay updated on the mandatory requirements coming into effect in 2025.

Contactless payments have seen substantial growth, now accounting for over 75% of all cashless transactions. The country has also a high bank account penetration rate of 98.2%, with 1.81 cards per capita, primarily dominated by debit cards. 🌐 Alternative payment methods: Digital wallets are fast becoming a preferred method for online transactions, making up about 25% of all online transactions. PayPal remains the top choice for Austrian consumers, while other players include Amazon Pay, Apple Pay, WebMoney, Seqr, Skrill, and Google Pay. Local solutions such as Raiffeisen Bank International AG ’s ELBA-pay, Erste Group’s George and Electronic Payment Standard (EPS) are also popular. 🏦 Banks: The Austrian banking system is well-organized, with banks grouped into industry associations based on their specific focus. The largest Austrian banks in terms of total assets in 2024 are Erste Group (245,7 billion €), Raiffeisen Bank International AG (152,2 billion €), UniCredit Bank Austria AG (101,66 billion €), BAWAG Group (45,66 billion €), and Raiffeisenlandesbank Oberösterreich AG (37,2 billion €). Other important banks include Oberbank, Steiermärkische Bank und Sparkasse, and HYPO NOE Landesbank für Niederösterreich und Wien AG. 📶 Payment processing & gateways: Key local players include DIMOCO Payments (founded in 2000, offering over 100 payment methods) hobex AG Payment Systems, and Paysafe. PAYONE, popular in Austria and Germany, facilitates various payment methods like Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal. Unzer serves over 70,000 merchants across Europe and recently expanded its POS solutions in Austria. Anyone working in #payments around the world knows that payments are local. There are differences between countries but are there regional variations within countries? In #Ireland according to the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland Payments Monitor there is a marked difference in use of digital wallets with people in #Dublin paying with them 4 times more than people in Roscommon (about 150km to the west). While on our family vacation in North West #Spain a few weeks back these were the payment notes. Regional Acquirers - This was the first time I was aware of the role they play with ABANCA (A banca in Galégo/Galician means the bank) observed in about half the merchant locations we visited. Abanca have naming rights on Riazor the stadium of Deportivo La Coruña which will host matches in World Cup 2030. National acquirers BBVA, Banco Sabadell (who paused the sale of their acquiring business to Nexi Group after BBVA's hostile takeover bid), Comercia Global Payments were present and a Getnet (part of Santander) all red terminal stood out. Getnet highlights payment installments/#BNPL via #Plazox with eligible customers able to spread purchases over 3,6,9 or 12 installments. Bring some cash - There was only one tourism business I saw that was 'Solo efectivo' - cash only, while some smaller churches only accept cash donations. Some public transport including buses in Santiago and A Coruña don't accept cards, although A Coruña has a closed loop card similar to Leap or Oyster and apparently it can be topped up at Abanca ATMs. One option that seemed ripe for cashless transactions was a little shop of multiple vending machines, Apunto 24, however it looked like all the machines had the card reader removed and it was cash only. One opportunity perhaps for Irish #fintechs JustTip and Strikepay is the hospitality space as we didn't have the option to leave a propina (tip) by card in any venue. Banco de España in a survey on cash usage last year found that 65% of the Spanish population used cash everyday while it was the primary payment method at point of sale for 60% of the population. I did spot the MuchBetter prepaid Mastercard for sale at a supermarket checkout and there appears to be a market for prepaid cards with BBVA and Santander among others offering them to customers who want to control spending or don't want to use their main cards online. Multi currency churches - The cathedral of Santiago de Compostela probably attracts one of the largest international church visitors in the world with about 3 million visitors annually including over 400,000 pilgrims who follow the yellow shell. It was interesting to see they accepted donations in other currencies though the volume of Ruble donations is probably pretty low at present. Getnet also advertise #DCC at their merchant locations with 'Pay in your currency' on the decal.
