❓What is better leadership? I recently read an article about an interview with Céline Schillinger, Author of Dare to Un-Lead. Celine criticised performance evaluations suggesting a better approach - an approach that would achieve a better outcome for the time and resources it takes. ❓What if the team got together and evaluated its own performance by asking these questions: ➡️ How do we work together? ➡️ What is the quality of our collective work ➡️ How can we make it better? Most of our work today requires us to work with a team of people. ✅ An effective team is aligned & motivated around a common purpose. ✅ High performance comes from giving those people agency and ownership in pursuit of that purpose. 👉 Imagine the ripple affect on the WHAT we do, and HOW we work together by using these questions as a springboard for reinvention so a team continually delivers value. (versus the current impact on a business, customers & individuals of performance evaluations) Looping back to my original question of what is better leadership? #HoganAssessments One of my clients recently found themselves in a fascinating position: transitioning into a fast-paced startup after years of success in traditional corporate environments. Through our work with the Hogan Assessment, we discovered that their high score in Tradition — a preference for structure, stability, and established processes — initially seemed like a contradiction to the more fluid, innovative nature of a startup. However, we reframed this “contradiction” as a strategic advantage. Tradition doesn’t have to mean rigidity—it can also mean creating valuable frameworks that help guide growth, establishing sustainable practices, and being a cultural anchor in environments that are constantly shifting. By leaning into their strengths, my client was able to bring consistency and reliability to their startup team, while still staying open to the creative and agile mindset needed in a fast-moving industry. 🎉 Congratulations to my friend and thought leader, Peter Wollmann (together with Lukas Stricker & Doris Pemler) , on the release of his book, Reading an Unknown Organization 📚! McKinsey again. Offer again. 💥 Another great success for one of our mentees, who will join #McKinsey in one of their global flagship offices - New York City! The offer was already achieved a while back, but I didn't elaborate on it yet. What is especially remarkable: this mentee is from an established "target school" on the US East Coast, from which MBBs hire a good number of people every year. But this time around, it was ultra competitive! Apparently, both Bain and BCG did extend ZERO offers at this school - which is completely unheard of! And also McKinsey gave only TWO offers! The fact that our mentee was one of these two individuals illustrates once more that high-quality-coaching for MBB interview preparation is a BIG DEAL! Mind-wandering: ever wondered about the speed at which we speak and think? 🤔 My latest drawing, inspired by a #GenerativeLeaders conversation with Servane Mouazan ICF PCC and Julia Rebholz, shows the contrast: we speak 💬 100 words per minute, but our minds race with 900 thoughts 💭 per minute. Research by Killingsworth and Gilbert (2010) supports this, revealing that our minds are constantly active, with about 47% of our time spent in #MindWandering —thoughts unrelated to our current activity. The dynamic nature of our inner world is funny yet profound. While we carefully choose our words, it's quite likely that the listener's mind is off on its own mind-wandering adventure. Connections, reactions, ideas, resistance, insecurities? In other words, we listen from the inside out. At Toastmasters International and in my training sessions and teaching at IESE Business School and as a keynote speaker and at every friend's wedding or birthday party. How to #lead now...CREATE. 16 experiences how to lead in change. Today #15: CREATIVITY ROCKS. ...based on my virtual keynote (GERMAN language) from June 27, 2024 at the Leadership Digital Summit. English transcript: Fifteen. #Creativity. Very, very important. I spoke to a person who writes creativity books. He travels around the world and tries to find out how to be creative. How do people do it? Very interesting. And that's my way of explaining it. So, we have 26 letters, at least in German. And then there are endless stories, endless books, it never ends. That's because of creativity. Then I have twelve notes, like on the piano the white and the black keys. And you all know an infinite number of melodies. Classical, jazz, hip-hop, everything possible - because of creativity. And the same with numbers 0 to 9, I can calculate the flight to the moon, I can calculate GenAI, etc. - because of creativity. That means when someone comes and says: I need more people, more money, etc. Then I always say: wait, maybe you can solve that with creativity. Because creativity needs very, very little input, very little input, but it needs the space, this empowerment, etc. And then you can do things that can deliver infinite return on investment, with very, very little input.

An exceptional group of super players doesn’t automatically make a functioning team! I’ve constantly met good teams with common goals who easily outperform groups of super players with contradicting motives. Patrick Lencioni’s famous model highlights that a functional team thrives in a context of “Vulnerability-based #Trust.” This type of trust means team members feel #safe expressing opinions and emotions, disagreeing, admitting mistakes, and asking for help, even when their views differ from other members (or the leader!). This foundation of trust naturally fosters healthy ideological #conflicts that a wise leader would demand, respect, embrace, and explore productively. With this trust and response to conflicts, and even without consensus, a team can set and #commit to clear (and collective) goals, and hold each other #accountable for the needed actions and behaviors. The foundation of vulnerability-based trust is a prerequisite to maintaining focus on the collective #results, rather than continuously running after individualistic wins of power and protection! Sounds difficult? Yes, it is easier said than done! As well as anything that’s worth attaining! Sounds simple? Yes, it all starts with “Trust.” So you know what door to open today! If that door isn’t open, no amount of policies or governance can make your team effective! Worth mentioning, “Trust” can’t be tackled by only adding knowledge! It needs to be tried, trained, felt, and fully experienced. Step out of the rat maze and start role modeling vulnerability-based trust today!

How incredible is this program! We, as ICF coaches, all share a common commitment to continuous self-improvement. The challenge of accruing enough CCEUs every three years can be daunting. At times, we may choose a program based solely on the number of CCEUs it offers, rather than considering the true impact the program could have on our development. ACBC (Application Coaching for Business Coaches) is probably the program I completed in the last 18 years that has had the most significant impact on my coaching abilities and what I can offer to my clients. The only downside for me is not having received any CCEUs at that time 😁. The 40 CCEUs make me eager to experience it again 😂 If you're seeking a phenomenal coaching programme that will make a real difference and offers plenty of CCEUs, you should definitely consider exploring this opportunity. Last week I attended Project A Knowledge Conference 2024 (#PAKCon2024). It was hard to chose which talks to attend since the agenda was super interesting! I focused mostly on AI topics, here are some of the key messages I took away from them: ✅️ AI landscape in Germany: - AI research, private and public, is growing in Germany and leading worldwide, mostly in robotis development - Policies on data protection / access to government data are roadblocks to further development of AI in Germany - There is still a big gender gap in AI research, dominated by males, under 35 and high earners - AI is not just about gathering data, it needs to focus on solving human needs - Education, Social Dialogue and Medicine are the areas that will benefit the most from AI ✅️ Why companies are failing to implement AI? - They focus on tech but do not focus on the PM / production side, assess if the culture is ready to use AI, have the right talent for such projects - A lot of times, simple available tech can solve a lot of the needs of companies, no need for fancy AIs - A lot of people are using AI, but many do not have a lot of optimism about using it moving forward. Start small, with narrow user cases. Test, test, test. - Educate and change mindsets about using AI. Address the fear of the use of data, replacement of workers and compliance. - There are too many political discussions in companies, focus more on the substance and execution. - Data challenges: 80% of projects fail due to lack of data or too much data (duplication, things that are not needed) ✅️ The future of AI: - Most of the information we consume is digital, but a significant amount is embedded in the physical world - 90% of sensory input is non-verbal for humans. A 4y old has seen 52 times more info than an LLM, because it builds from sensory information. AI won't replace human beings and it will be really hard for AI to develop consciousness - We need to create a new philosophy for AI: make LMMs smarter and address complex challenges - This opens up new horizons: Smaller AIs / less complexity, Optimzed performance and latency, Zero-Shot learning (= incorporate real time learning) These are some of the key take aways.
