𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞? The EU Taxonomy helps investors identify environmentally sustainable economic activities, promote a transition to a zero-carbon future and guide funding towards solutions to tackle the climate crisis and prevent further environmental degradation. In short, the EU Taxonomy: 1. Creates a frame of reference for investors and companies; 2. Supports companies in their efforts to plan and finance their transition; 3. Protects against greenwashing practices; 4. Helps accelerate financing of those projects that are already sustainable and those needed in the transition. According to data from the EU Commission, capital investments into Taxonomy-aligned activities have increased in 2024 compared to the previous year. 𝐎𝐧 𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞, 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 20% 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬’ 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐱𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲. These numbers are likely to grow further as companies start to report on the four environmental objectives (in addition to climate mitigation and climate adaptation), since that increases the scope of eligible companies. Stock market data (see graph below), indicates that 𝐭𝐚𝐱𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 seeing that companies disclosing high Taxonomy figures have outperformed the overall market in recent years. With more companies coming into scope of the EU Taxonomy in FY2025, it will be interesting to see if the trend continues to hold. 🔉 At #EUSEW2024, our colleague Georg Vogt spoke in a policy session on the #transposition and #implementation of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive recast (#EPBD). A key highlight of Georg’s presentation was the introduction of the collection of advanced practices for #EPC and #SRI [https://lnkd.in/d67enFhP].     He also presented how utilising the Better Regulation Guideline and Toolbox (#BRG) [https://lnkd.in/gicxJvpR] helps seven national energy agencies in the tunES project identify core problems, their drivers, and to design, assess and select the most effective and efficient policy option.    In this grant-funded effort in tunES, we build on experience from Framework Contracts with multiple European Commission DGs. On July 15, the Capacity-building Alliance of Sustainable Investment (CASI) supported the international Platform on Sustainable Finance (IPSF) (under the European Commission) to host a knowledge-sharing session on the Common Ground Taxonomy (CGT) for Sustainable Finance (as part of the EU Climate Dialogues project), together with the Climate Bonds Initiative and Ambire Global. This insightful session introduced the background and need for the #CGT, progress made so far, existing use cases and a few more steps of further evolution. Silvia De Iacovo from the European Commission, Dr Bolu W. and Cheng Lin from CASI set the stage with welcome remarks, establishing a solid foundation for the discussion. This engaging session brought together esteemed speakers including Zofia Wetmańska, Bridget Boulle, Prateek Kumar, Alison O’ Riordan who generously shared their knowledge and expertise. 🌱 The webinar highlighted how the CGT is evolving into a valuable tool for promoting sustainable finance and fostering cross-border cooperation in addressing climate change. The CCAQ has published its comment letter on the proposed #sustainability risk and #climate metric disclosure standards (CSDS 1 and CSDS 2). The CCAQ supports the establishment of a global baseline for sustainability reporting, and we understand that there is widespread stakeholder support for the creation and adoption of a standardized sustainability risk assessment and a climate-related metric disclosure standard. However, we believe that there are challenges with the application and implementation of these standards.
