Aviation sector advances towards net-zero carbon emissions goal at ICAO Stocktaking Event Supported by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the global aviation sector has continued its efforts to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The 2024 ICAO Long-Term Aspirational Goal (LTAG) Stocktaking, ICAO’s sixth such event, brought together close to 400 participants last week to exchange expertise, showcase successful projects, and identify priorities in response to the urgent need for action on decarbonization in the aviation sector. The four-day event, held at ICAO's Montréal Headquarters, featured 90 panelists representing a diverse range of stakeholders including governments, aviation and energy sectors, research institutions, start-ups, financial institutions, and civil society organizations. "We gather to address one of aviation's most significant challenges: achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. We are here to share progress, learn from each other, and chart our path forward. This Stocktaking event represents another important step in our journey towards this ambitious target," remarked Salvatore Sciacchitano, President of the ICAO Council. The event covered a wide range of crucial topics. Panel discussions focused on the latest developments in aircraft technologies, hydrogen use in aviation, operational improvements, and airport infrastructure. Several sessions were also dedicated to Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), addressing policies, partnerships, sustainable certification, accounting, implementation support, and financing. Common themes included the importance of involving all stakeholders, and the role of ICAO in the development of harmonized policies to support the energy transition. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) expects to resume European routes soon and is eyeing several UK destinations after the EU aviation regulator lifted its bar on the flag carrier. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) suspended PIA's authorisation to operate in the EU in June 2020 over concerns about the ability of Pakistani authorities to ensure compliance with international aviation standards. https://lnkd.in/dMUnMque

There was recently a strange incident with a break of cockpit access rules on a SriLankan Airlines Official flight. The facts are still under investigation but what is known so far is that the co-pilot left the cockpit for a restroom break and the captain was left alone in the cockpit. When the co-pilot wanted to come back, the captain did keep the cockpit door locked. The co-pilot could only re-enter the cockpit after the cabin crew convinced the captain over the internal communication system. Our article summarizes the known facts - you know us, no speculation - and also explains how the Airbus cockpit door system works to prevent both unauthorized access, even if the intruder know the secret code, while being safe in case of pilot incapacitation. https://lnkd.in/dE4FY8Pr

Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan
ICAO WEEK IN KAZAKHSTAN From November 4 to 8, 2024, International Civil Aviation Organization Week will be held for the first time in Kazakhstan, in the city of Almaty. As part of this event, regional awareness-raising seminars on risk assessment in conflict zones and "Green Airports" will be held. Senior leaders from international civil aviation organizations will participate in the events, including the Regional Director of the ICAO European and North Atlantic Office, Nicolas Rallo. The Conflict Zone Risk Assessment Workshop aims to provide States with best practices for risk assessment for civil aircraft flying over or near conflict zones. Given the unstable situations in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, as well as the need for constant analysis of the international situation, the seminar will be useful for all air carriers operating or planning flights to these areas. At this site, international experts will share best practices in risk assessment, where they will also discuss existing problematic issues for decision-making, including the development of effective interagency coordination processes for assessing security risks. The Green Airports seminar will be held under the auspices of ICAO together with ACI Europe with the support of the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Civil Aviation Committee. The organizers are the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan and Almaty International Airport. The participants of the Green Airports workshop will have the opportunity to discuss areas related to the development of airports with low carbon dioxide emissions and environmental impact, with a special focus on environmentally friendly aviation fuel (SAF) and the use of other environmentally friendly energy sources, including innovations and solutions for the development of airport infrastructure and their energy transition. The seminar is aimed at discussing key aspects of the sustainable development of airports and the introduction of environmentally friendly technologies into aviation infrastructure. To participate in the Green Airports seminar, pre-registration is required, which will be available at the REGIONAL SEMINAR ON GREEN AIRPORTS (icao.int ) until September 15, 2024. Applications for participation as a speaker at the conference are accepted by e-mail [email protected] by September 15, 2024. For media accreditation, please contact the press service of the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan by phone +77072000177 and e-mail: [email protected].

The Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA) is rehabilitating defunct aircraft at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport for training purposes. A second defunct MD-83 aircraft, weighing 60 tons, is set to be transported to Hyderabad on Monday night using German technology-equipped trailers via the National Highway and Gharo-Thatta route. This marks the second successful relocation of an aircraft to the Aviation Training Institute in Hyderabad, following the earlier transfer of another plane via the Super Highway. Authorities have issued the necessary No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for the project. Project Director Munir Alam stated that all arrangements are complete to ensure a smooth transfer. The initiative aims to optimize resources and enhance training facilities for aviation professionals. #AviationTraining #PakistanAirports #AircraftRelocation

In a significant regulatory action, the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) has fined Air Canada $250,000 for operating flights over prohibited Iraqi airspace. This penalty underscores the stringent measures in place to ensure aviation safety and compliance with international airspace regulations. The violations occurred between October 2022 and January 2023. During this period, Air Canada operated flights through restricted Iraqi airspace under its codeshare agreement with United Airlines. The USDOT's jurisdiction in this matter stems from the fact that these flights carried United Airlines' designator code, thereby implicating both airlines in the breach of airspace restrictions. #Airport #Airline #Canada #AirCanada #UnitedAirlines #USDOT #AviationIndustry #AviationOasis https://lnkd.in/enMUKV-A
