Deutsche Telekom is making a strong push for 5G mmWave technology in the industrial sector. The telco has successfully trialled mmWave frequencies for industrial applications and are now actively targeting industrial customers. This is a strategic move for a few reasons: 🔘 Ultra-Fast Speeds & Low Latency: mmWave offers significantly higher speeds and lower latency compared to traditional mid-band 5G, crucial for real-time industrial applications like robotics and automation. 🔘 Enhanced Network Capacity: mmWave can handle a much larger number of devices and data streams, ideal for dense industrial environments with numerous connected machines and sensors. 🔘 Unlocking New Applications: The high bandwidth and low latency of mmWave can enable entirely new industrial applications that wouldn't be possible with traditional 5G. Deutsche Telekom's focus on mmWave for industry is a clear sign of the growing importance of this version of the 5G which has been widely adopted in the USA, Middle East and Asia but has not been adopted in Europe. Exciting times ahead for IoT and satellite connectivity.   I’ve been closely following the evolution of the IoT and its interconnection with satellite technology for many years, so I was interested to see a recent report from Juniper Research that predicts a 150% increase in the number of satellites supporting Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity over the next five years, with the total number of satellites increasing from 10,000 in 2024 to more than 24,000 in 2029.    The report highlights the critical role of multi-orbit structures, which combine the low latency of LEO satellites with the wide coverage of GEO satellites, which will be key to meeting the needs of IoT applications, from data-intensive operations to low-power, wide-area connectivity.   With the value of global satellite IoT transactions set to nearly quadruple by 2030, strategic partnerships will be essential to fill coverage gaps and provide seamless service. Working with their members, the GSMA has set out a vision for change in the sector. It’s a vision where refurbishment and repair extends the lifetime of devices and network equipment. An industry where equipment and devices are made with 100% recyclable and recycled content, where we use 100% renewable energy and where no device ends up as waste. With this in mind the GSMA, alongside industry partners, has launched two major initiatives in the past year to help accelerate change. The first is the GSMA Equipment Marketplace (https://lnkd.in/e-BG2VQE), a global digital marketplace to source, reuse, resell, and recycle pre-owned telecommunications network equipment. It gives operators and equipment manufacturers a platform to achieve financial and environmental sustainability. Early adopters, such as Vodafone, have successfully used the platform providing them with new revenue and cost savings, while also helping reduce their carbon footprint. The service was launched in February 2024 and there is already eight operators using GSMA Equipment Marketplace.

Another reason #euro2024 should be a fun watch – 5G will be involved! Broadcaster RTL Deutschland and Deutsche Telekom are working together to use 5G services via a private 5G network to deliver “data-intensive applications” with the network running in the 3.7GHz to 3.8GHz range and offering up to 100MHz of bandwidth to the broadcaster.
