With eight billion people on the planet and dramatically rising geopolitical, social, environmental, and climate challenges supply chains need to be agile and resilient to keep functioning. We need breakthrough approaches and solutions to work ourselves out of the current complexities. In this BVL blog post, I focus on three fields which I consider to be critical for achieving such breakthroughs. First, human-machine hybrid solutions, as the combination of the two creates a whole that is greater than the sum of their parts. Second, the need for more sustainable practices and products, e.g., a circular economy because we are increasingly forced to slow down the deterioration of our planet which is currently the only habitat of our species. Third, collaboration, as I believe that we are very good in competing but that coopetition, i.e., the collaboration between (competing) businesses is a recipe for creating economic and societal capital in a more balanced way. It is evolving from a primarily operational function to the backbone of business strategy and continuity. From Covid-19 pandemic, Russia's invasion of Ukraine and disruptions in the Middle East, disruptions have become the norm. Miebach Consulting/DVZ Logistics Outsourcing Study 2023   Part 10: Outsourcing grows ever more slowly - now also abroad   A significant reduction in the positive prevailing mood can be seen among both German shippers and service providers. The trend from 1998 to 2014, with a continuous decrease in the proportion of those who predicted an increasing logistics outsourcing trend (1998: 66%, 2014: 53%), seemed to be broken in 2017, when an increasing value of 62% could be noted again. This short-term recovery could not be confirmed in 2020: The rate of those expecting a further increase in logistics outsourcing fell to 48%, and thus below the 50% mark for the first time. In the current study, this figure is now 49% and thus still below the 50% mark. This development can be seen both among service providers and shippers. In the other regions considered here, the mood continues to cool. Among shippers in LATAM, the rate of those expecting further growth falls from 71% to 64%, and in the rest of Europe from 77% to 60%. The corresponding rates among service providers are 80% in LATAM and 50% in the rest of Europe.   With this short article our series regarding the 2023 Logistics Outsourcing Study ends. The Corlette or Furnibox as it is colloquially known is an ingenious product that effectively stores bulky items such as furniture and flat packed goods, that allows the objective function of warehousing to be achieved! It is projects like this that make me optimistic. Especially in times of geopolitical crises and the misconception that #protectionism and additional #tariffs will safeguard jobs. In the end, it always comes down to strengthening global #supplychains. And that is what we are doing at DACHSER, for example, with our new Container Freight Station in Waddinxveen near #Rotterdam. In our own warehouse, we consolidate groupage shipments from the #Netherlands, #Belgium, large parts of #France and #Germany as well as #Switzerland and, in some cases, #Austria and #EmergingEurope, and ship them bundled by sea freight via the port of Rotterdam to destinations all over the world. It's all about managing the consolidation processes in our own facility independently of third parties and thus control a crucial part of the supply chain. At the same time, Waddinxveen is connected to our land transport network via the local European Logistics branch with closely timed transports. Nothing will change in this #supplychain. 🇩🇪 I’m heading to CEVA Logistics Germany this week 🇩🇪 Looking forward to meeting the team on some of our Aerospace and E-Commerce Fashion sites as our strategy accelerates. Visiting the north and the two largest cities of the world’s 3rd largest economy. Interessante Fakten bitte Alex? Leise bitte. 👥 The German population will peak in 2025 at 85m. By 2050 it will drop below 80m. This pattern of peak and slight decline is predicted across most of Europe. ⚡️🚘 Germany is a fascinating case study around sustainable energy transition. Its biggest Exports are Cars and biggest Import is Natural Gas (a fossil fuel). It has taken steps to catch up with the rest of Europe in recent years but it’s a contentious issue. 🛡️ Defence spending is rapidly increasing due to a change in foreign policy. In 2025 it will be the 2nd largest NATO country in terms of defence spending at c$97bn. This will be above the 2% NATO target for the first time in over 30 years. Another contentious issue that will impact 2025 elections and probably increase the populist vote. 🏭 Hamburg metropolitan area has a population of 5m and boasts the only UNESCO Heritage Warehouses at the Speicherstadt. 📈 The 6m inhabitants of Berlin enjoy economic performance that is significantly higher than the national average.
