Saudi Arabia shortlists bidders for 3.7 GW solar projects #SaudiArabia has advanced to the next phase of its National Renewable Energy Programme (#NREP), shortlisting several #bidders for four major #solarprojects with a combined capacity of 3.7 GW. The lowest #bid, a notably competitive price of USD 12.92 (EUR 11.91) per MWh, was submitted for the 2-GW Sadawi project, located in the Eastern province. The projects under consideration include the #2GW Sadawi Solar PV project, a #1GW solar installation in Hail province (Al Masa’a Solar PV IPP), a #400MW project in Madinah (Al Henakiyah Solar PV IPP), and the #300MW Rabigh 2 Solar PV project in Makkah. Among the shortlisted bidders are prominent international players. Leading the pack is a consortium that includes Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company), Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), and Gd Power Development Co., Ltd. Another significant contender is an alliance between SPIC Huanghe Hydropower Development Co and EDF Renouvelables. Additionally, Al Jomaih Energy and Water Co. Ltd. Siemens Energy to build 5 new power plants to develop Iraq’s national grid The spokesperson for the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Musa, revealed on Tuesday that Iraq’s Electricity Ministry agreed with Germany’s Siemens Energy to develop a plan to enhance the electricity sector in Iraq. Musa told Shafaq News that the steps agreed upon include the construction of five power plants in different Iraqi governorates, including the capital, Baghdad. The Iraqi official clarified that five new power plants will provide 7,500 megawatts of electricity as each will have a production capacity of 1,500 megawatts, confirming that work is underway to develop electricity transmission in Iraq. The agreement with Siemens Energy includes specific financial allocations to build the power plants agreed upon, according to Musa. The new power plants will be part of the ministry’s plan for the next three years. The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, launched on Monday the executive work to expand the Haidariyah and Najaf power plants with a capacity of 495 megawatts. These projects are part of the strategic agreement with Siemens Energy to complete power plants in Najaf, Karbala, Baghdad, Basra, and Diyala with a total capacity of 7,500 megawatts, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Musa revealed last week that Iraq currently produces a little more than 27,000 megawatts, while the country needs 48,000 megawatts to cover domestic electricity consumption. Iraq heavily relies on gas imports from Iran but has recently invested in many projects to start taking advantage of flared gas and using renewable energy to generate electricity. Gas imports from Iran are extremely important for Iraq to generate electricity. However, US sanctions imposed on Iran make it difficult for Baghdad to pay for the Iranian gas. Iraq witnesses daily power outages that may last up to 10 hours, but things worsen during the scorching summer when the temperature exceeds 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit). The Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, announced in mid-March that an agreement had been signed with Siemens Energy to turn flared gas into fuel within six months. Fadel confirmed that the agreement is part of the efforts of the Iraqi government to stop gas flaring and use it to generate electricity.

The Egyptian Council of Ministers has approved AMEA Power's plan to connect 2 GW of renewable energy to Egypt's grid by summer 2025. This includes expanding the Abydos solar project to 1 GW and adding a 500 MW Amunet wind farm in Ras Ghareb, along with a battery storage system. By the end of 2023, wind and solar power contributed 2.7% (1.6 GW) and 3% (1.8 GW) to Egypt's capacity, respectively. Egypt aims for 42% of its electricity to come from renewables by 2035. ☀️ A significant milestone has been achieved for the solar industry in #SaudiArabia: the #Sudair solar project, with a capacity of 1.5 GW, is offering electricity at an astonishing price of $12 per MWh. To put this in perspective, the average price for #solar power in a competitive market like #Spain is around $68 per MWh—five times as much. This price point not only sets a new world record but solidifies the Middle East’s dominance as a leader in cost-effective solar development.   🌍 Africa has seen competitive pricing through initiatives like IFC - International Finance Corporation #ScalingSolar. The Kael and Kahone solar plants in #Senegal, commissioned in 2021, saw prices drop to the $38-40 per MWh range. However, as one can see, the Sudair rates are in a league of their own. For sure, the #MiddleEast region possesses a unique set of advantages: economies of scale from large-scale projects, lower labor costs than Europe, and most importantly, exceptional solar yields, in excess of 2,000 kWh/m² annually. The longer-term 25-year power purchase agreements (#PPA) in this region also contribute to reducing #financial risk, paving the way for ultra-competitive pricing.   🔍 This combination of factors has positioned the Middle East as the #Eldorado for solar energy, setting a blueprint for extremely low prices in the renewable sector. Although the specific conditions of the region may not be entirely replicable, the principles—scaling up projects, optimizing costs, and long-term financial visibility—are certainly applicable. In #WestAfrica, these ingredients can certainly serve as inspiration for the renewable energy journey, in an aim to adapt critical successful factors to local contexts.   🚀 The Sudair project is a powerful reminder of the favorable pricing trend for utility-scale solar projects. ACWA Power and Partners Secure Financing for 5.5 GW #SolarProjects in Saudi Arabia ACWA Power, alongside its partners—the state-owned Water and Electricity Holding Company (Badeel) and Saudi Aramco Power Company (#SAPCO)—has successfully achieved financial closure for a series of #solarprojects totaling 5.5 GW in #SaudiArabia, valued at approximately SAR 12 billion (USD 3.2 billion / EUR 2.8 billion).
