Felix Robert Blaschke was an Austrian electrical engineer. In the early 1970s, while working at Siemens AG in Erlangen, Germany, Blaschke solved the torque control problem of AC motors by formulating direct vector control, or field-oriented control (FOC), laying the groundwork for modern drive control technology. Even today, it is difficult to imagine a scholarly paper in this field without referencing his work. Vector control is a variable-frequency drive (VFD) control method in which the stator currents of a three-phase AC or brushless DC electric motor are identified as two orthogonal components that can be visualized with a vector. One component defines the magnetic flux of the motor, the other the torque. The drive's control system calculates the corresponding current component references from the flux and torque references provided by the speed control. In the early 1970s, the computationally intensive method of field orientation required powerful computers that were not yet available. Therefore, the first rotary field machines with field-oriented control were implemented using analog technology. For the drives with asynchronous motors, the magnetic flux and the flux angle were first recorded directly with the help of Hall sensors installed in the air gap. Printed circuit boards in the format of a map of Europe were developed. These were then arranged in several 19-inch racks and wired together at the back via "wrap" technology. The coordinate transformations and other arithmetic operations were carried out by analog multiplications and divisions. Other computing operations were carried out with op-amps. My first encounter with vector control and "wire wrap" technology was in the early 1990s while working with Siemens/AEG technology that controlled 2Kw DC motors of a tandem rolling mill. #VFD #Siemens #AEG #vectorcontrol #motor #sidor #Erlangen
