The Chinese automotive market is applying immense pressure on the European automotive industry, particularly with its rapid production cycles and the affordability of its vehicles. Chinese manufacturers have mastered efficiency, producing quality vehicles at an unprecedented pace, shaking up the global competition. In my opinion the counter approach of applying tariffs is a short term solution. For European automakers to remain competitive, the focus can no longer be solely on innovation and craftsmanship but also on streamlining operations and accelerating the time to market. This is where modern production tools like CAD software must evolve beyond traditional uses. It’s no longer enough for CAD to serve merely as a design and documentation tool—it must become a hub for collaboration and communication, enabling teams to work across time zones, departments, and supply chains seamlessly. A connected, collaborative workflow allows for real-time feedback, faster iterations, and, ultimately, a more agile production process. In today’s fast-paced automotive landscape, adopting tools that break down silos and foster cross-functional teamwork will be the key to staying competitive against the rapid advancements in China. My learning from the post of Albert Pujol is, that unfortunately companies in the #automotiveindustry do not fully understand, what the potentials of #artificialintelligence could be specifically in operational areas of their businesses. Current discussions and informations are circulating almost entirely around Generative AI and LLM's. Generative AI is just one (important) part within the world of AI. Other topics like Deep Learning, Machine Learning, NLP etc. are (almost) being left out. And I agree with Albert Pujol: what are 10.000€ to 30.000€ worth compared to the potential benefits that can be created? AI-based digital assistants (Digital Colleagues) can also be a solution, which does not require a 'big investment' and can make a huge difference on improving performance. You need an example from operations? 60% cut in throughput time (cutting the the time, where no value has been added to the product) 50% cut in work-in-progress (means 'inventory' - means 'improving cash') 110% increase of value added time in production process => liquidity/cash improvement Overall result: cutting the number of extra shifts less temporarily workers needed => EBITDA-Improvement Do you need more? Are self-driving trucks the next big thing? Speaking to Welt am Sonntag (WELT Gruppe), one of Germany’s most popular Sunday newspapers, I argue that, when the autonomous driving hype started a decade ago, the industry should have focused on Level 4 trucks and other commercial vehicles right away. This would have altered the path of the technology entirely, because it would have ensured a direct return on investments, instead of chasing elusive maximum targets like revolutionizing transportation with Level 5 autonomy. So why is it that we're more likely to see autonomous trucks on the road? First, there is a real need, as truck drivers are not only expensive but also increasingly hard to find while freight volumes are going up. Second, ports, manufacturing sites or similar enclosed areas are controllable and have greatly reduced levels of complexity. Especially as trucks drive at very low speed in such environments, minimizing the risk for accidents. Third, trucks cover long distances on motorways. Motorways are a relatively simple operational design domain (ODD) for autonomous vehicles, but… …there are still a lot of open questions, as autonomous trucks on motorways will face the same problems as self-driving passenger cars. For example, traveling at speeds higher than 60 km/h increases the computational requirements in an exponential way, particularly for heavy equipment that is more difficult to brake or conduct evasive maneuvers with. And even though motorways are less complex, there are more challenging situations than one might think, such as merging traffic at entrances and exits, giving way to emergency vehicles, navigate through temporary construction sites or managing safe emergency stops for a flat tire. If a truck breaks down or requires assistance to master an unforeseen situation, where will the human operators be based? It’s easy in a city, but on a 1,000 km stretch of motorway, this is a real logistical problem.    And there is the open liability question including criminal law aspects. Yet, I do believe that we are more likely to see autonomous trucks on our motorways in the near future than autonomous passenger cars in inner cities. ❗️Volkswagen Group is currently facing a severe crisis❗️ What is happening to Volkswagen affects not only the company itself but also the entire car manufacturing sector in Germany and the country's economy as a whole. It is expected that two VW factories in Germany may close. Additionally, management plans to cancel the job security agreement until 2029, aiming to cut costs and save several billion euros. This crisis will have a significant political and economic impact in Germany. ⭕️ What is the size of Volkswagen in numbers? VW is an XXXL-sized company and one of the largest in Europe. Last year, it set a record with €332 billion in sales, making it the world's top company in terms of revenue (selling 9.24 million cars), ranking second only to Toyota. Volkswagen's sales exceed the national economic output of European Union countries like Romania, the Czech Republic, Finland, or Portugal. Globally, the Volkswagen Group currently employs around 684,000 people (including Skoda, Audi, Porsche...), with 200,000 working directly for the parent company VW, 120,000 of whom are in Germany alone. ⭕️ What is Volkswagen's crisis? The company is facing multiple issues. The VW brand produces cars at high costs and has fallen behind in the transition to electric vehicles and software (starting too late). This has primarily affected its biggest market, China, where sales of conventional cars have declined, and electric vehicles now make up half of the cars produced. In Europe, electric vehicle sales have also not met expectations. Additionally, the company is grappling with rising raw material costs (especially batteries, where China dominates globally). Customers are also cutting back on extras (features that are profitable for VW) or postponing new car purchases altogether. ⭕️ What are the consequences of Volkswagen's crisis? The crisis raises concerns about further disruptions at the company. Factory closures in Germany are expected, and the company’s austerity measures spell bad news for VW’s suppliers and other car manufacturers. If this giant is under pressure, it is likely that other companies in the automotive sector will be affected. According to the German Association of the Automotive Industry, about 800,000 people are employed in this field in Germany. A large number of job cuts and temporary wage reductions are also expected. The company's critical situation raises questions about the state of German industry as a whole, beyond just the car sector. Experts warn of the continued decline in the competitiveness of German industry, as conditions in Germany are no longer favorable and are hampering economic growth. Energy prices are high, corporate taxes are heavy, there is a significant labor shortage, and excessive bureaucracy and minor regulations are becoming an obstacle.

EICMA ends today (most important #motorcycle fair), a #NVH topic? Obviously, a world of #Automotive #testing :) First of all: Please don't think of illegally tuned, irresponsibly ridden screaming motorcycles ;). It can be a commuter vehicle and not for fun. Think about 200 million motorized two-wheelers (65% in Asia), which require significantly less fuel, space, budget than a car. Over 100 million Honda Super Cub make it the most produced gasoline-powered transportation in the world with extremely economical fuel consumption of 1.5 l/100 km. Intake, cylinders, gearbox, chain drive is - compared to Automotive - without insulation. HEAD acoustics GmbH products are used for - vibration analysis on frame, engine for function, durability, safety - for measuring vibrations at feet, bottom and hands for ergonomics - for determining structural properties to prevent critical resonances - for design of powertrain components - for improvement of airborne noise emissions for compliance with regulations - for design of windshields for better aeroacoustic - for detection of brake squeal noise including the stick slip parameters - for design of individual sound character - ... Manufacturers became innovative to emit less #noise to residents and more wanted #sound to the riders. A KTM 790 Duke mastered this, the deep pop sound is optimized for the ear position of rider / socius and less audible to the rear and side. The Jekill and Hyde Company develop exhausts with sound character to be quieter inside cities or pleasant deep at countryside. Yamaha MT-09 comes with an exhaust tailpipe directed downwards to create sound reflections for the driver, while the intake airbox is build as induction noise funnel system routed upwards through the fuel tank. Demographically it is understandable that young people ride two-wheelers and do not own parking space for a car. Anyone who has been to a big city in Italy knows how much a Piaggio or Vespa save space. The fact that electric scooters are finding their way into cities and short distances is a step forward for the noise situation, residents and better air quality. I find this two-wheeler sector exciting. Now I will start watching the highlights of #EICMA (LinkedIn, YouTube) and hope to visit the fair next year with Fabrizio Ferrian ;). ☠️ The Danger of Ignoring Innovation ☠️ 🖖 Years ago, following Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia’s mobile division, the former CEO famously said, “We didn’t do anything wrong, but somehow, we lost.” That statement recently re-appeared in my mind during a discussion with some colleagues about Motorola’s decline. Much like Nokia, they underestimated the competitive landscape. As highlighted by Henry Chesbrough in Forbes [1], Nokia’s leadership focused too heavily on operations. When they first examined the iPhone, they believed it posed no real threat, failing to grasp the strategic shift it represented. ➡️ Motorola, another pioneer in mobile technology, followed a similar path. Once a leader, they too overlooked the importance of challenging their strategic assumptions, clinging to past success instead of embracing innovation. The lesson? In an ever-changing tech landscape, you can’t afford complacency. 💡 It’s vital to question the status quo, look beyond current operations, and continually push boundaries. Innovation isn’t just about doing things right, it’s about daring to do things differently. Suggestion for TESLA Robotaxi: Concept 2.1 "ForSix" in the size of a "ForTwo" of Project ev-motion.com Specs: 1) Easy and instant access for all six passengers at the same time. 2) Seats move forward when entering and exiting. All with 3-point anchor seat belts. 3) A vehicle with incredible mobility, spins around its vertical axle. 4) 24/7 operation with patented instant-swappable batteries on future "ARIES" stations. 5) Rear passengers could watch where they're going, on the screens mounted at the back of the visors, including with itineraries on Googlemaps. 6) Could be run in platoons of two or more vehicles interconnected by sensors. and have all their batteries swapped instantly on linear "ARIES" stations illustrated on my posts. 7) Ideal vehicle to use the new Sodium (Na-Ion) batteries. 8) Rear passengers will enjoy 180 degrees panoramic view from the patented twin camera system (item #91) 9) It is a modular construction concept vehicle. Semi-assembled, could easily fit a couple of dozen units inside a maritime container, shipped anywhere in the world in conventional ships, and put together at the destination. This would avoid unnecessary assembly lines, delays, and expenses with garage ships and dedicated highway trailers. 10) If you go 10 posts below, you'll find another application for the concept of "ForSix" as a solution for the global "last mile transit" units, single or in platoons.
