Another reason #euro2024 should be a fun watch – 5G will be involved! Broadcaster RTL Deutschland and Deutsche Telekom are working together to use 5G services via a private 5G network to deliver “data-intensive applications” with the network running in the 3.7GHz to 3.8GHz range and offering up to 100MHz of bandwidth to the broadcaster. Great article highlighting one of the points that has had a major impact on the deployment of networks across the globe - how Governments 'sell' spectrum to MNOs and the impact this can have on rollouts. We have seen auctions in the past that have raised billions for Government coffers, but that leaves MNOs with major headaches in terms of monetisation as they then must upgrade (or build) masts and networks across the entire country, add new active equipment and provision upgraded backhaul, all of which is expensive, especially when they are in price wars with each other for customers. Renewals of these spectrum allocations will become more and more of an issue as the original licence periods expire, interesting to see how the German regulator is approaching the issue – especially considering their decisions creating new challenger companies when other M&A has taken place which potentially creates more headaches later on. Vint Cerf's Internet as we knew it in 1992 no longer exists. It has mutated from a highly distributed, hierarchical network with highly symmetric traffic flows into a commercial Internet, highly concentrated, with a flat architecture and highly asymmetric traffic flows where video distribution consumes most network resources. Relationship between content and application providers and Internet providers has changed accordingly, from a symbiotic relation to a pure B2B commercial and highly asymmetrical, I may add. European Commission proposed DNA provides a timely legislative initiative to address these imbalances, securing the continued sustainability in network investments needed to cope with increasing traffic demand. By securing through a fallback arbitration mechanism that commercial negotiations between network providers and highest traffic generators take place, it will not only improve the profitability of the networks associated with the provision of the service, but would also, by giving a price signal, encourage efficient traffic generation and therefore lower traffic growth. Both factors will contribute to the sustainability of the networks by making them more attractive to investors and by reducing the need for further investment to increase capacity as a result of slower growth in traffic demand. How many aggregators does it take to change a light bulb? One more if it is anything like the #OpenGateway API ecosystem. Ericsson and 12 major telcos are creating a JV to aggregate #networkAPIs before passing them on to other API aggregators who might then pass them on to a developer who could do something useful with them, hopefully. Computer science is all about abstraction and it seems with network APIs the more abstraction, the better. Don't get me wrong. This could help accelerate the Open Gateway initiative and avoid the friction suffered by previous attempts such as Mobile Connect. And what is good for network APIs is good for Vonage (which Ericsson owns), as well as all the other API aggregators (Infobip, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure , Google, etc.). Why the lamb? Ericsson is sacrificing any profits it had hoped to generate from its Global Network Platform because it is contributing this to the JV in return for a 50% stake, BUT the JV is not intended to make a profit. Only cover its costs. Which begs the question, who will want to run a non-profit tech start-up? It doesn't mean they won't offer an attractive salary but there will be no IPO and no stock options. We used QoO in a Vodafone trial earlier this year, plus I use it regularly to quantify performance during video conferences. I can testify that this new IETF approach directly correlates with my subjective experience of the application outcome. In this Gbps era of "enough speed", we need a better metric than the speed test, which is of diminishing value now. QoO is tailored per application/class and easily understood by customers. Two weeks ago Vodafone has launched a commercial platform for drones - with support of FlyNex and Dimetor. This is a great example how innovation can incubated with partners and pilots and moved to a scalable platform. Great achievement of Christoph Lindenschmidt , Tanja Vogt, Dierk Dohmann, Carla Poulheim, Johanna Heyden and many others. I want to thank our former colleagues who helped to start this activity before 2019 - just to name Fabian Gruenewald and Robert Tilch. 5G and slicing are great enablers for drone operations. We will continue working on innovation around drones. For example, we work with TU Dresden in the InnodCon, Tri5G and Landnetz projects with Vodafone Chair Mobile Communications Systems where we explore drone use in the Logistics and Agriculture sectors. Drones can also help to digitize the work of "bluelight orgnizations" such as firefighters. Interesting to see this from the OpenChain Project. Good to see that they recognise the value of Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) but disappointed to see that they have been very prescriptive in selecting a single format (SPDX) and versions (2.2 and 2.3). The main justification seems to be that it is because it is an international standard (ISO); however this is only true for version 2.2 as version 2.3 has not been submitted for standard. IMHO specifying a single format constrains interoperability; the focus should be on the content not the format of the SBOM. The two standards SPDX SBOM and OWASP CycloneDX SBOM/xBOM Standard are continually being evolved and it would be good for this to be recognised in the guide. #sbom #softwaretransparency #aph10

dApps: Real-Time O-RAN RIC Apps ◼ rApps, xApps and dApps - rApps: Applications that run on the non-real-time RIC, responsible for long-term control actions and decision-making that require timescales greater than one second. - xApps: Applications operating on the near-real-time RIC, which handle control loops ranging from 10 milliseconds to a few seconds. They are capable of closed-loop control for use cases like mobility management and network slicing. - dApps: Distributed applications running directly on RAN elements, such as CUs and DUs. They handle real-time control loops below 10 milliseconds, focusing on radio management, resource scheduling, beamforming, and modulation functionalities. dApps provide faster control for these functions by operating closer to the data source, ensuring fine-grained management and reducing overhead. ◼ Need for dApps While rApps and xApps deliver meaningful improvements, their architecture falls short in providing efficient control at sub-10 millisecond scales due to inherent latency in data collection and decision implementation. dApps address this gap by embedding control logic directly into the RAN nodes. They achieve reduced latency, programmability at the edge. ◼ Interaction with the User Plane: Access to low-level user data, such as IQ samples, allows dApps to manage interference, beam directionality, and modulation while maintaining privacy and security. ◼ Challenges and Architectural Evolution The concept of dApps, though promising, presents challenges related to resources, orchestration, and standardization: - Resource Management: With multiple dApps sharing the same physical resources at DUs/CUs, intelligent resource allocation is crucial to avoid conflicts. - Standardized Interfaces: The interfaces connecting dApps to the CUs/DUs need to be defined and standardized to facilitate seamless data collection and control. - Orchestration: An orchestration framework is essential to determine which tasks are suitable for xApps versus dApps and to mitigate conflicts between them. ◼ Proposed Architecture for dApps - dApps as Softwarized Containers - Southbound and Northbound Interfaces - Conflict Mitigation - Intent-Based Orchestration ◼ Real-World Applications - Beam Management: dApps can implement AI-driven beam selection logic to enhance spectrum utilization and reduce interference. - Ultra-Low Latency Applications: By managing scheduling and slicing at sub-10 millisecond timescales, dApps can support ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). How are video content, consumption and consumers evolving, and what will the video experiences of the future look like? My colleague Sebastian Schwarz covered this topic in a recent event in Germany, and here are some of his key takeaways: 1. Streaming services are almost at full saturation, with over 90% of all US households subscribing to at least one. 2. The vast majority of video content is being consumed on mobile devices, and short-form video content received 2.5 times more engagement than long-form. 3.
