Hapag-Lloyd AG, Kuehne+Nagel and Flowfox launch pilot to automate import container releases Hapag-Lloyd and the innovative LogTech startup Flowfox start a pioneering pilot project set to redefine the global import container release processes. This landmark initiative will be initially launched in France with Kuehne+Nagel and in Germany with another major freight forwarder.   To underline the global approach the pilot will be launched in France and Germany simultaneously. Over the first three months, the closed testing environment will ensure a robust, error-free application before a broader customer and country roll-out.   The goal is to largely automate the process of releasing import containers between Hapag-Lloyd and its importing customers to achieve enormous efficiency gains for everyone involved. Typically, the release process is still very manual and error prone. Danny Smolders, Managing Director Global Sales at Hapag-Lloyd: “At Hapag-Lloyd, we are committed to elevate service standards and maximizing efficiencies to ensure our customers receive a best-in-class experience. Therefore, we are engaging in a pilot with Flowfox, as we firmly believe in the significant automation potential within the import process. Miebach Consulting/DVZ Logistics Outsourcing Study 2023   Part 10: Outsourcing grows ever more slowly - now also abroad   A significant reduction in the positive prevailing mood can be seen among both German shippers and service providers. The trend from 1998 to 2014, with a continuous decrease in the proportion of those who predicted an increasing logistics outsourcing trend (1998: 66%, 2014: 53%), seemed to be broken in 2017, when an increasing value of 62% could be noted again. This short-term recovery could not be confirmed in 2020: The rate of those expecting a further increase in logistics outsourcing fell to 48%, and thus below the 50% mark for the first time. In the current study, this figure is now 49% and thus still below the 50% mark. This development can be seen both among service providers and shippers. In the other regions considered here, the mood continues to cool. Among shippers in LATAM, the rate of those expecting further growth falls from 71% to 64%, and in the rest of Europe from 77% to 60%. The corresponding rates among service providers are 80% in LATAM and 50% in the rest of Europe.   With this short article our series regarding the 2023 Logistics Outsourcing Study ends. Deutsche Bahn selects the final four DB Schenker bidders. Deutsche Bahn has narrowed the number of potential buyers of freight forwarding subsidiary DB Schenker down to four bidders that have now been invited to make binding offers. According to Reuters, the German rail giant has selected Maersk, DSV, Saudi shipping company Bahri and a private equity consortium led by CVC. Deutsche Bahn said that in the next few weeks, the four companies would have the opportunity to make a binding offer for the forwarder. Reuters said that the initial bids for the forwarder were between €14bn and more than €15bn. The private equity bid is led by CVC and also includes Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) and GIC, a subsidiary of Singapore’s state-owned investment company Temasek. Deutsche Bahn announced at the end of last year that the forwarder was officially up for sale after spending a year mulling its options. The forwarding giant is being sold by Deutsche Bahn as it looks to reduce debts. Air Cargo News sister title DVZ reported earlier this year that Deutsche Bahn had asked interested parties to demonstrate their experience with logistics M&A deals of this size and that they have the appropriate financial resources. They must also explain what interest they have in Schenker and give an initial insight into their plans for the company if they were to win the contract. The sales documents show that a complete sale is still the preferred option, although interest in less than 100% of the shares would be considered, so a partial sale is not completely ruled out either. If Maersk were to be successful, the takeover would push the Danish company close to the top three airfreight forwarders. DSV, however, would become the world’s largest airfreight forwarder if its bid were successful, given it is currently ranked third and DB Schenker fourth. AP Moller Maersk chief executive Vincent Clerc recently commented: “Our strategy is very clear, we need to diversify our revenue streams and our earning streams towards the more stable and less volatile part of the supply chain, which is pretty much anything outside ocean/2PL,” he said. “In that respect, having something like a Schenker coming on the market is definitely something that Maersk cannot simply say we are not even going to look at.” Air Cargo News #dbschenker #freightforwarding #europe #bidders

On December 19, 🇩🇪 Deutsche Bahn AG announced the official start of the sale process for its subsidiary DB Schenker. The sale will proceed only if the transaction provides clear economic benefits for Deutsche Bahn. The company is conducting an "open and non-discriminatory" process, inviting potential buyers to submit expressions of interest to its advisors, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, by noon on January 15, 2024. Selected bidders will be chosen in the following weeks. Although DB Schenker holds a solid position in markets with strong growth prospects, Deutsche Bahn believes the logistics provider requires more capital and flexibility to fuel its own growth. Proceeds from the sale will be used to reduce Deutsche Bahn's €30 billion debt, allowing the company to refocus on its core rail business to achieve its climate goals 🌍. DB Schenker, with around 76,600 employees in over 130 countries, is a leader in land, air, and sea freight as well as specialized logistics solutions. 🚉 LatRailNet diligently stays updated on the new capacity regulation that aims to allow infrastructure managers to respond better to the needs of different rail customers. 📜 European Commission has determined that there is a need for the definition of “combined transport operation" to be reformed. According to the UIRR position paper, European intermodal freight transport sector proposes the following definition to be used in the revised #CombinedTransportDirective: Combined transport operation is an intermodal transport operation where the non-road modes of transport carry out more than 50% of the actual distance that the intermodal loading unit is carried. The 50% should change to 60% in 2035 reflecting the anticipated enhancements in terminal density and rail infrastructure development.     Ralf-Charley Schultze (President of UIRR) in his presentation at RailFreight Summit 2024 pointed out some of the contributions towards the objectives - such as more and better quality train paths for freight trains, minimum train length requirement on heavily used and congested lines, punctuality KPI (75% of freight trains within 30 min upon arrival), border crossing KPI (25 min border-crossing in 90% of the cases), infrastructure development and process harmonisation. The Management Board of Deutsche Bahn AG signed an agreement for the sale of its logistics subsidiary DB Schenker to the Danish transport and logistics group DSV for an enterprise value of EUR 14.3 billion. Including net debt and the expected interest income until completion, the total sales value amounts to EUR 14.8 billion. The agreement is subject to final approval by the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Bahn AG and the German Federal Government in accordance with the Federal Budget Code (BHO). The transaction is expected to be completed in the course of 2025 following receipt of all regulatory approvals. Hengeler Mueller advised Deutsche Bahn comprehensively on the transaction.
