Munich Airport International
#Meet Herbert Michael Keffel, our Head of Competence Center Operations, ORAT & IT. Herbert is one of our most seasoned aviation professionals and our dedicated expert for #ORAT projects. With a strong and holistic operational background, he knows how to guide and support large teams through complex challenges. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗧 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘁? Yes true – it was the ORAT for the new Munich Airport in 1992. The relocation from Riem to the current location near Freising was carried out in a truly remarkable overnight operation. I was a resource allocator with ground handling at the time and part of the team that managed the relocation. My job was to allocate trucks and special vehicles to the loading zones to load the material, vehicles and mainly GSE at the old airport and release them to the new airport at the right time to the right place. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁? It was the first ORAT project in history ever. The beauty was that it was masterminded by the ops planning department of Munich Airport, they in turn acquired people from different areas to manage and execute the project. Everything went seamlessly and without the slightest glitch! From this project, whose methodology was unprecedented at that time, we derived the program that we call ORAT (operational readiness and airport transfer) today. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗧 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻? I was involved in 11 and led 6 of them. It is an elevating experience to help bring such complex infrastructure to life and thus connect the world. 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁? The first ORAT project that I participated from start to end was the one in Kuala Lumpur. I was seconded to there from 1996 and it was my first time in southeast Asia. I was young, with a great team that managed this huge project. Another highlight was the sheer size and complexity of Istanbul. The move from TK and their affiliated companies from Atatürk Airport to the new site was the largest move in mankind so far – all goods transported would cover 33 football pitches. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗧 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀? 30 years ago, it was a rather manual exercise, at the very beginning with pen, paper, and whiteboards. This was enough to manage the logistical challenges. With the ongoing digitalization and growing complexity in logistics, IT is increasingly important to manage the project itself but also stakeholders, logistics, trainings, and trials. We now see and test the implementation of cloud based ORAT collaboration and management platforms. The next step will be the introduction if KI to further improve and facilitate logistics, planning and communication and thus streamline ORAT projects. #newairport #ShapingTheFutureOfAirports #airportopening

Last week, it was disclosed by Lufthansa that they will be ending its decades long Frankfurt-Beijing flights due to increasing navigational costs by avoiding flying over Russian air space. They currently fly FRA-PEK daily using an A340. LH will however continue to operate 5 weekly MUC-PEK using an A350. My personal opinion is though the total operational costs are high for LH using an A340 flying an extra 4.25 hours round trip versus Air China, fault also lies in there being way too much excess capacity on the FRA-PEK-FRA route itself being dumped by Air China. Just the fuel burn alone is an extra 32,000 litres round trip which averages out to be an incremental cost of US$ 30,000 per flight just on fuel + you have to add the incremental navigational + crew + maintenance on top of that for basic operations. CA flies double daily B773s + LH operates a daily A340 when the p2p market demand over the past 12 months was only 78,000 pax round trip. Granted both CA and LH get a lot of beyond connecting pax at both ends of the spectrum due to their Star Alliance code share feed especially CA whose primary EU gateway point for offline stations is FRA. But that beyond transit market feed via FRA for LH comes at a low yield as they are competing against all the major EU + Gulf + Asian carriers for a slice of the pie. LH made the right commercial and financial decision as it was not viable across all fronts to continue burning cash on this sector when the 2 airplanes dedicated on this route can be re-directed elsewhere on shorter / more profitable sectors i.e. Cape Town + YVR + India in Winter 2024 season. In addition, CA's pricing strategy is way more aggressive than LH and they take a lot of transit pax for Asia via PEK to places that involve a lot of back tracking such as Thailand and Vietnam due to their very low fare offering. Compared to FRA-PEK demand, Shanghai though has much higher p2p with 188,000 pax flying this sector round trip over the past year. Surprisingly though, the yield on FRA-PVG was only 4% higher than PEK over the past year. On the PVG route, there are 3 daily nonstop flights i.e. one daily each flown by LH CA and MU respectively. If you compare, FRA-PVG with 188,000 pax p2p alone has the same number 3 daily nonstop flights against FRA-PEK with market demand of 78,000 only! What has unfortunately happened to LH here was the same fate suffered by BA as Air China too on the London route dumped too much capacity by flying double daily LHR + daily to LGW. On the PVG route, MU flies daily from both airports + CA too flies PVG-LGW! With regards to Munich-Beijing, over here too the p2p market demand is extremely small i.e. 47,000 pax round trip last year but CA flies daily + LH 5 weekly. Granted, MUC is a mega Star Alliance hub for onward transfers to Europe but if FRA-PEK cant be sustained then MUC too would struggle for LH. #lufthansa #staralliance #a340 #a330 #fra #frankfurt #muc #ba #britishairways #virginatlantic

Deutsche Aircraft Revises Entry into Service Timeline for the D328eco™ Regional Turboprop Deutsche Aircraft, the pioneering German Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), announces a revised entry into service (EIS) timeline for its 40-seater regional turboprop, the D328eco. The aircraft is now set for EIS in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2027. The adjustments to the timeline align with regulatory changes that entail the detailed and comprehensive certification process, and the associated compliance requirements. This update comes after detailed internal review and intensive discussions with customers and potential operators, the aviation value chain, and key stakeholders. While the reasons behind this decision are multifaceted, the revised EIS timeline will also enable Deutsche Aircraft to implement additional capabilities and improvements to the brand-new regional turboprop. Deutsche Aircraft continues to collaborate closely with current and potential operators, as well as suppliers, on the latest developments in the D328eco programme. Several new features and capabilities are being evaluated, including a further improvement of STOL performance, specifically in non-benign operational environments, combined with advanced avionics capabilities. These changes will be made in the context of the current certification and programme envelope and will advance the D328eco to even higher standards of market requirement alignment for both commercial and multi-role operators. While the pressure on the global aviation manufacturing supply chain remains very high, Deutsche Aircraft can be proud of an excellent support from the business partners and stakeholders across the industry. Dave Jackson, CEO of Deutsche Aircraft, remarks: “While we have had to realign the EIS for our D328eco, we are taking this opportunity to investigate further product enhancements and satisfied by the tremendous progress of the programme to date: our certification panels with EASA are advancing successfully, start of construction for our Final Assembly Line in Leipzig has begun and we have secured over 95% of our suppliers, including those providing access to strategic growth markets. We will be announcing further milestones during the upcoming Farnborough International Airshow. Building on the renowned in-service D328-100, the new D328eco leads the market with innovative elements including a state-of-the-art Garmin avionics suite and PW127XT-S engines which will be fully compatible with SAF-PtL at EIS. These advancements make the D328eco an advanced and unique 21st century turboprop, ready for the future of aviation. Most importantly, we are pleased to receive continued interest and demand for the D328eco from different segments across the market. Our success would not be possible without the dedication of our team, support from our industry partners and the substantial involvement of regional and multi-role operators during product development.” #D328eco #DeutscheAircraft
