CERN openlab
This year, The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to scientists who made considerable contributions to Artificial Intelligence research, marking a significant indicator of the advancements in #Computational Sciences. But how can #Physics relate to #ArtificialIntelligence? Big scientific experiments, like the ones in the #LHC, produce a vast amount of data. Identifying rare events or new particles in a big dataset is like finding a needle in a haystack! With challenges such as the High-Luminosity LHC leading to more data generated by the LHC experiments, #Technology that helps select the events worth analysing is essential. AI algorithms are perfectly suited to help process and analyse this data. For example, they can help recognise patterns and anomalies that might indicate new physics phenomena. At CERN, #CERNopenlab contributes to this area of innovation via collaborations with technology providers and research institutions that are developing state-of-the-art platforms, services, and methodologies. We aim to foster the widespread adoption of AI methods and techniques applicable to various AI use-cases, providing the community with access to specific expertise and resources. Many other fields face similar Big Data challenges and can profit from the innovations made within the #HEP community, such as #RadioAstronomy, #ClimateSciences and #HealthSciences. In our mission to accelerate #Computing for science, at CERN openlab we do R&D on AI and HPC through collaborations with our industry and research partners: E4 Computer Engineering SpA, Intel Corporation, Micron Technology, Oracle, Siemens, and Simons Foundation. #editorchoice 👉 Title: #Helminths in Invasive Raccoons (Procyon lotor) from Southwest Germany 👨🎓 by Nico P. Reinhardt et al. 🔗 Link: https://lnkd.in/ggKyaRHW 🎯 Article Views: 1904; Citations: 4 As hosts of numerous zoonotic pathogens, the role of raccoons needs to be considered in the #OneHealth context. Raccoons progressively expand their range as invasive alien species in Europe. This study aimed to investigate the intestinal helminth fauna of raccoons in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, as no such screening had ever been conducted there. In total, we obtained 102 animals from hunters in 2019 and 2020. Intestinal helminths were retrieved using the SSCT (segmented sedimentation and counting technique) and identified morphologically and by PCR-based Sanger sequencing. Fecal samples were assessed using the ELISA PetChekTM IP assay (IDEXX, Germany) and flotation technique. The artificial digestion method was employed for analyzing muscle tissue. We detected species of four #nematode genera (#Baylisascaris procyonis, Toxocara canis, Capillaria spp., and Trichuris spp.), three #cestode genera (Atriotaenia cf. incisa/procyonis, Taenia martis, and Mesocestoides spp.), and three #trematode genera (Isthmiophora hortensis/melis, Plagiorchis muris, and Brachylaima spp.). Echinococcus spp. and Trichinella spp. were not found. The invasive behavior and synanthropic habits of raccoons may increase the infection risk with these helminths in wildlife, domestic and zoo animals, and humans by serving as a connecting link. Therefore, it is crucial to initiate additional studies assessing these risks. #OpenAccess

📃Scientific paper: Triple Flares within Five Years in ztf18aanlzzf: An Enhanced Tidal Disruption Rate in ULIRGs? Abstract: We present a noteworthy transient event in the optical light curves of ztf18aanlzzf \(SDSS J161259.83+421940.3\), identified as a Narrow Line Seyfert 1 \(NLS1\) exhibiting merging patterns in the optical image. The 16-year long-term archived light curve revealed that this target stays in a steady state, while three flares occurred within the past 5 years with time separations ranging from 1 year to 3.5 years. The flare patterns of rapid brightening and slow decline following the peak, coupled with distinctive spectral features with strong He \{\sc ii\} and rare appearance of Bowen fluorescence line emissions, indicate at least two Tidal Eruption Event \(TDE\) flares in ztf18aanlzzf with a time separation of 3.5 years. We also apply TiDE light curve modeling and yield a Black Hole \(BH\) mass of $\sim 10^\{6\}\ M\_\{\odot\}$, which is consistent with the BH mass measured from single-epoch spectra. Besides, the observed time lags $3.90\_\{-2.00\}^\{+2.06\}$ days between the g and r bands strongly disagree with the prediction of the standard accretion disk model, highlighting the intricate interaction in the inner region related to the TDE. The reoccurrence gap of these TDEs, surpassing the previously reported repeated TDEs, can be attributed to binary star tidal disruption by a binary SMBH. Notably, the frequent TDE flares observed in this ULIRG-like target align with findings in a previous report for another ULIRG, suggesting a potentially elevated TDE rate in ULIRGs. Systematic variabil... Continued on ES/IODE ➡️ https://etcse.fr/2qd ------- If you find this interesting, feel free to follow, comment and share. This paper proposed a novel #stochastic #geometry #framework to study the #downlink #coverage #performance in a #millimeter #wave (#mmWave) cellular network by jointly considering the polar coordinates of the #Base #Stations (#BSs) with respect to the typical user located at the origin. Specifically, both the Euclidean and the #angular #distances of the BSs in a maximum power-based association policy for the #user #equipment (#UE) are considered to account for realistic beam management considerations, which have been largely ignored in the literature, especially in the cell association phase. For completeness, two other association schemes are considered and exact-form expressions for the coverage probability are derived. Subsequently, the key role of angular distances is highlighted by defining the dominant interferer using angular distance-based criteria instead of Euclidean distance-based, and conducting a dominant interferer-based coverage probability analysis. ---- Harris K. Quantum Zeitgeist
Scientists Entangle Light and Sound for Secure Communication Scientists at the Max-Planck-Institute for the Science of Light (MPL) have made a breakthrough discovery, demonstrating an efficient way to entangle light and sound, a crucial step towards advancing quantum technologies. Led by Prof. Dr. Birgit Stiller, the research team has successfully entangled photons with acoustic phonons, paving the way for secure quantum communications and high-dimensional quantum computing. This achievement is significant as it overcomes the usual pitfall of external noise that plagues most quantum technologies. The proposed optoacoustic entanglement scheme, based on Brillouin scattering, is particularly resilient and can operate at relatively high temperatures, making it suitable for integration into quantum signal processing schemes. The team's research, published in Physical Review Letters, opens up new possibilities for the development of quantum memory or quantum repeater schemes. This innovative approach has far-reaching implications for emerging quantum technologies, and the MPL researchers' work could lead to significant advancements in this field. #quantum #quantumcomputing #technology https://lnkd.in/eQZYQJuW

New Research Insights on Stroke Recovery: The Impact of Astrocytic Endothelin-1 Overexpression A fascinating study published in Neural Regeneration Research, delves into the effects of astrocytic endothelin-1 (ET-1) overexpression on cognitive impairment following an ischemic stroke. The research, titled "Astrocytic endothelin-1 overexpression impairs learning and memory ability in ischemic stroke via altered hippocampal neurogenesis and lipid metabolism," provides significant insights into the mechanisms that contribute to post-stroke cognitive deficits. https://lnkd.in/gZ6pMh2F The study found that overexpression of astrocytic ET-1 negatively impacts spatial learning and memory after ischemic stroke. This impairment is associated with disrupted neurogenesis in the hippocampus and alterations in brain lipid metabolism. The research suggests that targeting astrocytic ET-1 could be a potential therapeutic approach for treating cognitive impairments that often follow a stroke. Methodology: The researchers used a middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model in both wild-type (WT) and GET-1 (astrocytic ET-1 overexpression) mice to study the effects on neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. They employed comprehensive proteome profiling and nontargeted metabolome analysis to understand the molecular changes post-stroke. This study not only enhances our understanding of the role of ET-1 in post-stroke cognitive impairment but also highlights the importance of lipid metabolism in brain function and recovery. The findings could pave the way for developing new drugs aimed at improving cognitive outcomes in stroke survivors. About the journal: Neural Regeneration Research is the one and only journal focusing exclusively in the field of neural regeneration, which is currently indexed in SCI-E, PubMed and etc. The journal's 2023 Journal Citation Reports Impact Factor has reached 5.9, positioning it in Q1 within Neuroscience (35/310). #StrokeRecovery #CognitiveImpairment #NeuralRegeneration #Endothelin1 #Astrocytes #Neurogenesis #LipidMetabolism
