How to End a VC Pitch Meeting The end of a pitch meeting is as critical as the presentation itself. While many founders spend the bulk of their time perfecting the pitch, the last 10 minutes of the meeting require as much attention. Abruptly ending a meeting leaves investors uncertain or disengaged. A structured conclusion, however, can lead to a clear path forward. Here are three objectives every founder should aim to achieve when wrapping up a VC meeting: Define a Clear Next Step Never leave a meeting without defining the next step. Investors have multiple demands on their time. Without a defined follow-up, your pitch will get lost in the shuffle. Ask directly when the VC’s internal meeting will take place. If they say their investment team meets on Wednesdays, say, “Great, I’ll follow up with you on Thursday.” This tactic demonstrates initiative and keeps the momentum going. If the VC hesitates to define a next step, it’s a red flag. It indicates they aren’t interested in moving forward. Don’t waste time chasing uninterested investors—focus your energy on those who show commitment. Guide Their Evaluation Process Most VCs won’t know how to evaluate your company. It’s your job to guide them. Highlight the metrics that matter in your industry and set the framework for how they should assess your business. For example, you might say, “Retention is a key indicator of our success. Have a look at industry benchmarks and see how our numbers compare.” Or, “To understand our customers' pain points, I recommend speaking with players in this particular segment of the ecosystem.” If you have a supportive paying customer or an industry expert contact, feel free to suggest a reference call. By giving them a roadmap for evaluation, you help the VC align their assessment with the most critical factors that reflect your company’s potential. Set Terms for Further Information Exchange If the VC requests documents you didn’t cover in the meeting—such as a financial plan—this is a chance to secure another engagement. For example, you can say, “I’ll provide the pitch deck we just covered, and let’s schedule a time to go through the detailed financial plan.” This keeps the dialogue active and ensures that further engagement is tied to your next move. It’s not just about sharing data—it’s about maintaining engagement and moving toward the next step in the process. Each piece of information you provide should act as a bridge to further discussions. Ending with Control The key to ending a VC pitch meeting is to maintain control of the process. Defining a clear next step, guiding the evaluation process, and negotiating further engagement are all critical components of a successful close. By managing these elements, you ensure that the conversation doesn't fizzle out but instead continues to progress. Reserve the final 10 minutes of your meeting to wrap up effectively—because how you end the meeting might just determine whether or not you secure the investment.

Zeitgeist is changing and we need to adapt or to encounter. When we started Climate Founders 4.5 years ago, we had a perfect Product Zeitgeist Fit (explained by a16z: https://lnkd.in/ePtBRVD3) in 2018 and 2019 activist groups like Fridays for Future played an important role to make the societies aware that we are in a climate crisis and need to act, with the beginning of the new decade announcement after announcement was made: politics made important changes from regulation to investment programs, more people than usual voted for green politics, the climate crisis got relevant media coverage, thousands of companies world-wide set decarbonization goals, huge asset managers implemented ESG and decarbonization strategies, billionaires pledged for the climate, hundreds of climatetech fund were established, serial entrepreneurs went into climate topics, Covid made many poeple think about contributing to a better world … in general you could feel change to make this decade to what it is in fact, the decisive decade for humanity. Even with beginning of the Russian war, there was a positive thinking that renewables are the solution to solve energy, industry and dependence problems, even climate chrisis deniers called them „freedom energies“. In 2023 we saw some Zeitgeist changes, the climate crisis seemed not to be a main topic anymore, in the media, in the politics, in companies and the society in general. Ambitious politicians understand that the society is not ready to change, some media work heavily against climate politics, companies realize how hard it is to decarbonize and partly drop their goals, asset managers start to drop ESG and decarbonization goals, investors and entrepreneurs look more at AI, politics goes right and populistic. Regarding Climatetech im still very optimistic: The 2018-2022 Zeitgeist helped to build a massive ecosystem, which is still growing. The current Zeitgeist is not in favor for Climatetech, but it will come back for sure, as unfortunately the climate crisis will hit us harder every year and we always had this typical left-right cycles in politics and societies. Due to our expanded activies our dealflow is still growing, but in general we have the impression that less new founders entered the space in the last 12-18 months and also hear from some other VCs that they see less climatetech teams. We take it as a challenge and re-focus on co-founder matching to make it easier to enter the space for founders. Especially scientists and serial entrepreneurs are our target group for our co-founder matching. 𝗔𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝘁 (𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗜𝘁𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸) When it comes to using LLMs for due diligence or market research, the output is frequently fast and cheap. But in venture capital, data reliability is crucial … so, how do we make it ‘good,’ too? We built a fact checking research workflow in Make to: ⚫ Break the problem down ⚫ Research using targeted AI internet searches ⚫ Filter the results with AI-powered cross verification ⚫ Put together the report ⚫ Format the output for readability The result? A useful web app AI researcher where the output is double checked for clarity and relevance. Big thanks to Connor Davidson, GP at Atlanta Seed Company, for sharing his template + research for this project. 𝟭. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🧱 Make doesn’t use ‘templates’ like Zapier. It uses JSON object Blueprints. Connor's is linked in the comments here. The nice thing about Make is that the Blueprint populates exactly as the original creator intended it, which eliminates a lot of manual work. Once we made a free account, all we had to do was click “New Scenario” in the dashboard and then upload it by hitting “Import Blueprint” (image 1). Now, our Scenario looks like this (image 2) 𝟯. 𝗪𝗲𝗯𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗣𝗜𝘀 🪝 After we uploaded the Blueprint, we had to set it up to work on our own accounts, APIs, and webhooks. Let’s knock out the easiest ones first. Serper - This one operates as an HTTP request. All we need to do here is go to https://serper.dev/ and grab a free API key and paste it into the “Value” spot here (image 3) Perplexity - Similarly, we needed to grab an API key from https://www.perplexity.ai/ and paste it into the module to make the connection. Since their API is relatively new and in public beta, we did need a Pro subscription. But Perplexity nicely gave us 5$ in free credits to start (image 4) ChatGPT - Lastly, rinse and repeat that process for the ChatGPT module via https://lnkd.in/eHf3nrEb. 𝘞𝘦𝘣𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴 - For now, all we need to do is create a new webhook and keep an eye on that web address. That’s the address we’ll be interfacing with when we connect it to our app to allow us to send data back and forth (image 5) 𝟰. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗪𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗪𝗲𝗯 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝘀 𝗔𝘁 𝗔𝗜 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗩𝗖 🔥 Creating an app can sound scary. In practice, it’s super easy. In fact, we prompted ChatGPT to write the entire code and it worked on the first run. ​Download it by clicking the link in the comments. The only change you’ll need to make is adding that webhook URL from Make we told you to keep an eye on. We: ⚫ Threw that code file into a new repository in GitHub. ⚫ Made an account with Streamlit. ⚫ Clicked on ‘Create An App’ and filled out these basic details (image 6) Just like that, the app is live, hosted, and publicly accessible to our Make automation (and anyone else). Want to exit as an early-stage founder? Yes, it is possible. But it requires a different approach to typical M&A dealmaking. A bit of context… I get 5-10 messages per week from relatively early-stage founders (traction, but not massively profitable yet) who are looking to exit. There are many reasons why - one of several projects, need more stable finances, tapped out and unsure what to do next. Etc. This also applies to relatively small businesses (sub-£5M revenue), owner-operated with a good team where the motivation may be a life-style change or retirement. Now. To be blunt and honest, in 90% of cases there isn’t an exit path - usually because of mis-match in expectations. (Eg: “We’re just one small investment away from building a $BN+ company”) But. Most of the time you can salvage a £1-10M outcome over a 12-36 month period. How? By treating it as an investment case to deliver an outcome for a specific target company. For example: You have a software product that helps insurance companies manage supply-chain risk. Let’s say the business does £500k revenue and covers costs. Your average M&A Advisory would try to sell the company based on the revenue/EBITDA and (after many months of false hope) fail to do so. They will get offers - but rarely ones you want to accept. My advice - and what I always recommend founders / owners do below 1M EBITDA - is to approach specific targets with an investment case to deliver outcomes. For example: Making / saving a target insurance company Z benefits over an agreed timescale with milestone payments. Becuase taking supply chain risk. This is a multi-million, even billion, sized problem that all wrestle with - and invest significant CapEx and OpEx into annually. If you can solve that - or deliver X saving … you get Y. Sounds fair, no? This is a very standard deal in enterprise consulting land. And beats shutting the venture down and feeling like you’ve failed. No. It’s not the all-cash deal from Google. Yes. It will require work to implement. Yes. It is a viable path for most owners / founders to realise a good return for creating value in a relatively de-risked way. See. What many founders / owners overlook is that the most valuable thing they have created isn’t IP … software … their service offering … etc … It’s actually their understanding of the problem, how to solve it, and a team who can solve it. So. If you are in this situation and looking for an exit. But aren’t really acquirable yet, why not give this a go? First step is putting together a short-list of targets who you might approach and are already investing in the problem (bigger is better). Hope useful. Excellent chart! A common wrong assumption about VC investments in Europe, that they are in close relation with country size, population or GDP. This map clearly shows fundamental differences amongst similar sized countries... Whether one likes it or not, there MUST be a hub impact (preferred locations), existing network benefits as well as big disadvantages for any fragmentation...

So we’re left with Venture Scale but now just in a capital efficient way. Which I think is great for our industry. Because this means real PMF The exuberance of 2020/2021 was all about fake PMF. Everyone loves to say they have it, but very few can actually show it. Be one of those few 💪 Focus on finding a repeatable, scalable and capital efficient growth machine As a founder, that's your only North Star Once you do, if you scale to $100M in 7 years, then that’s the classic T2D3: → after you hit $1M ARR → you triple the next year to $3M ARR → triple the year after that to $9M ARR → then double, double, double and a bit more to $100M ARR But take a look at the first few years after $1M ARR ➡️ Because that's the real definition of Venture Scale The 3x of T2D3 means 200% year-over-year growth for 2 years straight So that's 10% month-over-month growth consistently for 24 months in a row That only happens with real PMF Now the fastest companies (the 1% of the 1%) are actually getting to $100M faster than 7 years... → Wiz and Deel did in just over a year → UiPath* and Slack did in about 2 years → Twilio did it in just under 4 years → Shopify and Carta were around 5 years Note, the clock here is only starting at $1M ARR... GenerativeAI - KI Hype / my take outs from Pip's presentation 📣 I can only recommend that you take a look at the keynote of Philipp Klöckner https://lnkd.in/e8nNjHcB It is a tour de force and maybe a few very important points might get lost because it is so much input. 👉 My 3 most important takeaways: #1 KI will likely have the most impact in hard science & industrial production => e.g. new materials with special properties, new antibiotics & drugs; weather forecasting, etc. ; but remember these breakthroughs are not achieved with ChatGPT but specialized models (e.g. AlphaFold) #2 KI is very good at understanding inputs (pictures; captchas) and this is the starting point in order to optimize and automate lots of processes #3 The output of GenAI regarding text generation, pictures and videos is not what will change the world - My personal opinion: Probably overrated when it comes to real world impact due to energy consumption + need for fact checking, non reproducibility and 👉 competition from low cost human ressources ❗ armed with internet access and therefore access to information and software. Conclusion: AI / KI is very important and will shape the world in many areas - but not all. Are we at the top of the hype cycle? Probably yes I will give you a real world example for #3: Yesterday I wanted to create a simple logo for a holding company: "Design a logo for a holding company (holdco) named: Competence media systems GmbH".
