Start-ups in Europe: a light at the end of the tunnel - finally!    This article by Nadine Schimroszik in Handelsblatt gives reason for hope for the tech ecosystem, as it summarises a development that has been tentatively emerging for some time: The number of new #start-ups in Germany is growing again, by 17 per cent, as shown by a comparison of the first quarter of 2024 with the same quarter of the previous year.   💡It is particularly interesting to see that most investments are being made in AI. An unmistakable sign that they continue to be a driver of innovation for the German startup ecosystem.   We recently came to a similar conclusion with my team, as part of our analysis of the German startup landscape. Swap Berlin Tech Bubble for Street Smarts: Trading Tech Hype for a Hammer ⚒ I started a “little” project. Taking over a small traditional SME until the end of this year. I have been working in digital consulting / corporate venture building, VC backed startups & corporate ventures with mainly tech at their core, which was fun, though & I learned a lot. During my travels I realized though that something was missing. 🛣 The charm of street-smart entrepreneurship: I was working for a booth construction company after my A-levels and was truly inspired by their way of honest entrepreneurship. Work very hard, focus on delivering value immediately and cash-flow accordingly. My favorite clients at etventure were similar. 🏊‍♂️ Swim against the current: While a lot of people work on the next (tech) trend, I though why not work on something hardly anybody (in my bubble) is interested in. Traditional “boring” businesses. Businesses that can be massively enabled by digital technology to deliver more effectively instead of getting disrupted. 🏒 A LOT of SMEs in Germany are looking for a successor and can’t find one: So why start from 0? These companies are the backbone of the German economy. Maintaining and developing them not only promises to preserve their legacy, but also strengthens local and national prosperity. 🤓 The best way to grow is to do something you are not ready for. YET: Instead of over-preparing. I thought. Let’s pick a project I am not qualified for and become qualified on the way by encountering problems and solving them. Plus, the topic of SME acquisition is just fascinating to me right now. My approach: Start the search part-time. Freelance & (success-based) services in e.g. Sales, Project Management, Product Marketing on the way ideally for SMEs to enhance my network & understand the SME avatar better. Well, and to earn my living. 😉 Share the challenges I encounter, explain how I solve them & what I learned on the way. Some of these solutions might become valuable services & products for others too. I am pretty sure this is going to be a hell of a ride, taking risks and having loads of ups and downs. Legends say it takes 6-18 months. The goal is to keep going. Emotional state: Nervous and excited at the same time. _____ Has anyone ever changed their career path in this way? How did you deal with it, and what did you learn along the way?

🔸 🔶 🔸 AI is going vertical 🔸 🔶 🔸 In a new guest article for Gründerszene / Business Insider I talk about how vertical AI is revolutionizing the work environment: After genAI took the world by storm it has rapidly commoditized. To train an advanced LLM costs hundreds of millions of $$$. But the usage of LLMs has become commonplace. Now the AI world is turning vertical: How can genAI solutions successfully be deployed within industry verticals? Not on the surface but solving some of the tough industrial challenges in a substantially new way, driving an increase in productivity by a factor of 2-5? That has become a core area of interest for AI in 2024. Vertical AI is already making inroads into a number of core industries such as consulting, finance and healthcare but is also being used in less obvious sectors such as wind energy generation or sports. Over time it is likely to affect our work environment across all sectors. And - unlike earlier automatizations - it is going to affect mostly white collar rather than blue collar work. Welcome to a new and lasting technological disruption. 📊🇩🇪 Berlin remains German Startup Capital! 🚀   🌐Insights into Germany's Startup Landscape: Ernst & Young's Startup Barometer for 2023 unveils key trends in German startups. Despite a 39% dip in total investments compared to 2022, amounting to 2.4 billion euros, Berlin maintains its lead with a 39% market share.   🤖 Yet, the AI sector, flourishing notably in Berlin-Brandenburg, saw a significant surge in investments across Germany, reaching 943 million euros. AI emerges as the frontrunner in total investment volume, signaling promising prospects for the software sector.   With 468 new startups emerging in Berlin alone last year, the city retains its position as the top business location in Germany, edging out Munich to second place. #dealcode featured in #WirtschaftsWoche It's been 6 weeks since my almost 3-week trip to the USA, and the effects of that trip are still resonating with me. During my time in the US, I met many great people from all over the world and had the incredible opportunity to participate in 2 pitch events in New York and Palo Alto with 9 other outstanding AI startups. Thanks to the AI.STARTUP.HUB, German Accelerator, Start2 Group and other initiatives. The goal of the trip was to network with companies, other startups and investors to prepare the next step for dealcode: expanding our business to the US. During my time in the US, my perception was confirmed once again - there is a much greater willingness to invest in early-stage startups and the available venture capital is many times higher than in Germany, even when considering the GDP (see also my post from last week). A big thank you to Petra Vorsteher and Ragnar Kruse for their unwavering commitment to Hamburg & Germany as an AI hub. Their efforts to support AI startups through their AI.FUND and events like the one at HanaHaus are invaluable to our ecosystem. Also, many thanks to Matthias Hohensee, Silicon Valley correspondent for the German WirtschaftsWoche, for the interview and his excellent article on our journey in the US and the hurdles German startups have to overcome.
