Deutsche Telekom is making a strong push for 5G mmWave technology in the industrial sector. The telco has successfully trialled mmWave frequencies for industrial applications and are now actively targeting industrial customers. This is a strategic move for a few reasons: 🔘 Ultra-Fast Speeds & Low Latency: mmWave offers significantly higher speeds and lower latency compared to traditional mid-band 5G, crucial for real-time industrial applications like robotics and automation. 🔘 Enhanced Network Capacity: mmWave can handle a much larger number of devices and data streams, ideal for dense industrial environments with numerous connected machines and sensors. 🔘 Unlocking New Applications: The high bandwidth and low latency of mmWave can enable entirely new industrial applications that wouldn't be possible with traditional 5G. Deutsche Telekom's focus on mmWave for industry is a clear sign of the growing importance of this version of the 5G which has been widely adopted in the USA, Middle East and Asia but has not been adopted in Europe. We used QoO in a Vodafone trial earlier this year, plus I use it regularly to quantify performance during video conferences. I can testify that this new IETF approach directly correlates with my subjective experience of the application outcome. In this Gbps era of "enough speed", we need a better metric than the speed test, which is of diminishing value now. QoO is tailored per application/class and easily understood by customers. Another reason #euro2024 should be a fun watch – 5G will be involved! Broadcaster RTL Deutschland and Deutsche Telekom are working together to use 5G services via a private 5G network to deliver “data-intensive applications” with the network running in the 3.7GHz to 3.8GHz range and offering up to 100MHz of bandwidth to the broadcaster. Two weeks ago Vodafone has launched a commercial platform for drones - with support of FlyNex and Dimetor. This is a great example how innovation can incubated with partners and pilots and moved to a scalable platform. Great achievement of Christoph Lindenschmidt , Tanja Vogt, Dierk Dohmann, Carla Poulheim, Johanna Heyden and many others. I want to thank our former colleagues who helped to start this activity before 2019 - just to name Fabian Gruenewald and Robert Tilch. 5G and slicing are great enablers for drone operations. We will continue working on innovation around drones. For example, we work with TU Dresden in the InnodCon, Tri5G and Landnetz projects with Vodafone Chair Mobile Communications Systems where we explore drone use in the Logistics and Agriculture sectors. Drones can also help to digitize the work of "bluelight orgnizations" such as firefighters. European collaboration and projects, such as Hexa-X-II, 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA) and 6G Flagship are supporting with their controbutions 3GPP SA1 #6G #standardisation work. Validation of use cases is an essential part of the work. While working with 6G standardisation there is still on-going #5G mission with lot of use cases to be accomplished before 6G is reality. #Sustainability is essential aspect for the work. Challange is that there are different views to the topic. We need to generate understanding about what can be done with help of new technologies and how to turn sustainable solutions into sustainable business. Many of the use cases are implemented in #SmartCity context. This creates concrete connection with people, creating a possibility about showing the opportunities and potential of new technologies to large audience.

The private networks landscape continues to evolve in 2023, marked by a growing number of enterprises embracing 4G and 5G. The year saw many private networks transitioning into operational deployment from trials and proofs-of-concepts. The preference for 5G emerged in scenarios demanding high bandwidth and low latency such as applications involving autonomous mobile robots. However, the "show me the money" mentality has become increasingly relevant, with enterprises carefully evaluating the ROI before committing to new network builds and solution providers recalibrating their budgets to align with sales pipelines. LTE remains the preferred technology for private networks (especially in the U.S.), particularly in commercial deployments where 5G adoption faces limitations due to factors such as high costs and limited device availability. Many enterprises are taking an incremental approach - deploying 4G first to show tangible benefits, with the option to upgrade to 5G later. The ability for vendors to clearly demonstrate cost savings and new revenue streams unlocked by private networks is crucial to driving further adoption – “try before you buy”. Ultimately, showing definitive monetary gains instead of focusing on technical capabilities alone has become the make-or-break factor for private network projects being greenlit within enterprises. As more quantifiable business cases emerge, private network adoption is expected to continue accelerating rapidly.
