AWS Summit 2024 in Berlin!🇩🇪 In search of non GenAI topics.🕵️‍♂️ Last week I was at the AWS Summit with some #Brose colleagues. Once again, the Summit was fully booked. The location was great, but at its limits. 🏁Goals for me this year were: 1️⃣not only GenAI . Yes, to take a GenAI topic with me, but above all to look out for other topics. 2️⃣Exchange with well-known AWS employees and Partners. 3️⃣Strengthening the Brose internal exchange on AI, but also other topics from the AWS cosmos. I think it went quite well, the following topics were highlights for me: 🔝A presentation on Digital Robotic Workforce, how robots are sfinding their way into companies. 🔝A presentation on the DevOps platform at BMW and how professional software development is carried out there. 🔝A presentation on SAP on AWS, what can/should you expect? How complex would be a migration aso. 🔝A presentation on serverless vs. containers, when is the best time to use what. A very good exchange with AWS, partners and the internal Brose team. 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 𝟑𝟎𝟎𝟎+ 𝐤𝐦 𝐄𝐕 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩: Just got back from a summer vacation/ road trip to once so-called charging dessert - South of France. Thought I'd share some of the experiences. -𝐂𝐚𝐫 & 𝐋𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Tesla Model 3 SR+, one of the smaller batteries (usable 49 kWh). We’re 4 people with several baggages, driving mostly at 130 km/hr, ambient temperature 30°C (so a bursting air conditioner) -𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞: The rated WLTP of my car is 𝟒𝟑𝟎 𝐤𝐦. What we achieved was 𝟑𝟒𝟎 𝐤𝐦. Though WLTP is the most consistent comparison between different brands, it is way off from the real world (I’d consider ~20% lesser range). -#EV𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚: Before the trip, I was terrorized about the charging infra in south France. What I experienced was entirely pleasant. It’s greatly improved in the last 2-3 years. -Tesla 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 ‘𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲’ 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐲; But I chose to use non-tesla networks because (i) most of the Supercharger locations are outside the highway, I had to exit/re-enter the toll roads. (ii) and importantly, I wanted to experience the state of other charging HW& network in France. -𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠: IONITY, TotalEnergies Mobility Solutions, IZIVIA - Groupe EDF and Fastned have excellent coverage on highways. Used Electra twice, located just outside the highway. These players have greatly improved the status quo of France's #eMobility infra👏 . - In almost every charging stop, our EV was ready to continue before us. Our max charging was 174kW! So the 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞—𝐚 𝐦𝐲𝐭𝐡. As the charging speed has greatly increased on #electricvehicles & charger sides, there is no more unnecessary waiting time. -𝐄-𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭: All I had was just one app – built by my beloved team Vattenfall. It worked flawlessly all across. Thanks all EMSPs!; installing a dozen charging apps for a trip is history! Pieter van Ommeren, Ronald vanderScheun MBA Msc, Basten de Jonge, Abel Gerrits -𝐀𝐂 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠: Almost all our destinations (hotels, parking garages, even beaches) had AC chargers. But their UI&UX is a decade old! -𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Though there are more chargers, real “availability” is still a big concern!. I’d estimate ~20% of the chargers were partly/fully faulty (This must be higher % on AC chargers – as they get less attention/priority for servicing). -I was always able to move to the next working charger. But when #EV/utilization increase in future, I might not be able to freely move to the next charger. According to me, this is the area CPOs must focus going forward; otherwise, all those glamourous business cases calculated initially will be challenged heavily!  Those were the main things that came top of my mind. "Digitally yours ..." - Germany's very long road to digitalisation. We've been "digitising" things in Germany for a very long time indeed. Although most of the processes and initiatives focus on "electrification" (let's put this form online 1-1 with the paper version) instead of true "digitalisation" (let's look at the value and needs and make the best possible digital solution). Take the ePA for example, first discussed in 2004 (as the eGA) and now finally launching "for real this time" in 2025, but in it's initial incarnation, effectively an electronic folder, with almost the same level of functionality as a paper one. (I'm still in favour of the ePA to be clear, I just wish it was really more digital). Why? I think nationally, we're easily distracted by and overly focused on "the right thing" combined with a low tolerance for change and a massive focus on making it totally safe. Example of distractions and change intolerance: There's now an outcry over apostrophes (https://lnkd.in/dK82M4re), which without putting too fine a point on it, don't really matter to the future of society. 50% people #BUY #THE #SAME 🚘 👁️ It is amazing to see that even the least loyal car customers buy the same #brand on average at least 50% of times. Branding is thus super #powerful in #automotive. 🔋 Also interesting to see is that most of the #German, hi-quality producers are among the least loyal customer base brands. EV cars have a bit of unfair advantage, because if you switch to electric cars mentally, there is less competing brands for EV-repurchase. But still impressive customer #retention figures from those.

It's disheartening to witness the recent developments in Germany, where one of the most innovative tech companies, Lilium, has been let down after years of government support. Innovation requires immense sacrifice, and it’s concerning to see Europe falling behind while countries like the United States continue to back their tech pioneers. This growing gap in support will likely create a significant disparity in the global market, especially in terms of competition and innovation. As a European and German entrepreneur, I see this as a serious setback for the entrepreneurship community. To remain competitive on the global stage, we must rethink and revitalize the approach to supporting our tech industry before it’s too late. I remain hopeful that we can turn this around and make 2025 a prosperous year for the European tech ecosystem.
