Dear Bjorn Gulden, in life as in retail many things are inexplicable. However, the German Football Federation's recent decision to terminate their partnership with adidas and move to Nike as their new kit supplier from 2027 is not one of them. Nike saw an opportunity to offer improved terms to the federation and outbid their rival amidst recent challenges. It's no surprise that the DFB jumped at the chance to accept such an offer, given the current economic situation and the recent performance of their team on the international soccer scene. On the other hand, Adidas has faced some inexplicable controversies in their own turf, including the recent debacle of the stylized font of the number '4' on the jerseys, reminiscent of the lightning-bolt symbols used by Nazi SS units in WWII. Additionally, there has been ambiguity surrounding the ongoing sales of Yeezy's leftover inventory in global markets. It's clear that Nike's conquesting tactics have paid off with this new partnership, providing a significant boost to their PR. Mostly for running shoe geeks. This paper had the working title “Energy Return - WTF?” It has been retitled and will be published in the next issue of Footwear Science. Those of you familiar with a previous publication will get it when I say it could have been titled “Energy is neither ‘energy’ nor ‘return’.” It challenges some of the conventional wisdom around energy return in running shoes and its influence on running performance, and has some implications for the design of “super shoes” The paper is just been published online. It is open access so it can be downloaded (free) https://lnkd.in/g-gE2Sd2 I’d like to add that the published version was much improved in response to “robust” feedback from two anonymous reviewers. Peer review is a chore. I don’t like doing it and I don’t like being on the receiving end either. But it is an essential component of the process so I give my best effort to both sides of the reviewing process. It works.

After a tumultuous few years marked by declining #sales, lacklustre #innovation and decimated #retail relationships, John Donahoe has stepped down as CEO of Nike. His departure comes on the heels of mounting criticism over Nike’s #digital transformation #strategy, which hit a critical juncture on June 28 when the company’s market capitalization plummeted by $28 billion following a dismal earnings report. The report projected that Nike’s revenues would drop by “mid-single digits” in fiscal 2025, triggering the worst day for Nike stock since its 1980 IPO. It was a downturn that many industry insiders had long anticipated. Although Donahoe was brought in from #SiliconValley with a mandate to make #Nike a digitally-driven company, the justification for this strategy quickly eroded in a post-pandemic landscape. The rapid shift toward ecommerce, once seen as the future of retail, began to lose momentum as consumer preferences swung back to in-person experiences. But Nike, having pivoted so heavily into a direct-to-consumer (DTC) model while neglecting the core pillars that originally made it a global sportswear leader—namely, cutting-edge product innovation and culturally resonant marketing—found itself in a precarious position. To fill the leadership vacuum, the sportswear giant has named company veteran Elliott Hill as its new #CEO. Hill, who joined Nike as an #intern in 1988, worked his way up through the ranks, eventually heading global operations for both Nike and the Jordan Brand, before retiring in 2020. His return has already sparked a wave of optimism, with Nike's shares, which had fallen by 25 percent this year, rising by 6 percent in premarket trading following the announcement.

As the company navigates this period, it is also undergoing a leadership change with Elliott Hill appointed as the new President & CEO effective October 14, 2024. Key Highlights of Q1 2025 Results: [1] Total Revenue: Nike posted revenues of $11.6 billion, marking a 10% decrease from the same period last year [2] NIKE Direct Revenues: These revenues fell by 13% to $4.7 billion, driven by a 20% decline in NIKE Brand Digital sales & 1% increase in sales from NIKE owned stores. [3] Wholesale Revenues: At $6.4 billion, wholesale revenues dropped 8% [4] Gross Margin: Nike’s gross margin increased to 45.4%, largely due to ✔ Lower product costs, ✔ Warehousing savings & ✔ Strategic pricing adjustments from the previous year. [5] Net Income: Nike’s net income for the Q1 dropped by 28%, settling at $1.1 billion. These results reflect broader challenges across global markets. NIKE Brand Revenues reached $11.1 billion, down by 10% with declines across all geographies. Converse, the company’s subsidiary, also saw a 15% drop in revenue, ending at $501 million for the Q1. Amidst the release of its Q1 results, Nike is preparing for a major leadership transition. On September 19, 2024, the company announced the appointment of Elliott Hill as its new President & CEO This move seen as pivotal to the company’s next phase of growth.
