Although I struggled through an entire year of "abstraction and modeling" classes in 2000, conceptual modeling has been the most practical and valuable skill set I acquired. Informatics programs that emerged and took off after the #ARRA primarily focused on relational database modeling. Relational database modeling primarily involves logical and physical modeling, focusing on data representation required for storing and retrieving database information. Conversely, conceptual modeling focuses on organizing data into reinterpretable forms that represent information/meaning in a formalized manner suitable for communication, interpretation, or processing by people or machines. We will only achieve transformational change in healthcare with #AI once conceptual modeling is elevated to a first-class citizen, taking its rightful place alongside logical and physical modeling. Without it, AI will only achieve marginal improvements, nibbling around the edges of complex problems that are screaming for solutions.
