Amid violent unrest in New Caledonia, the governments of Australia and New Zealand are sending planes to evacuate their nationals. Hundreds of tourists have been trapped in hotels due to the turmoil. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed that French authorities have authorized two evacuation flights, with additional flights being planned. Approximately 300 Australians are currently in New Caledonia. New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced that an initial flight would bring home 50 passengers with urgent needs, with more flights to follow. The French High Commission in New Caledonia reported that the airport remains closed for commercial flights, leaving around 3,200 people stranded. The unrest in New Caledonia began over changes to the constitution that would allow more migrants, primarily from France, to vote, sparking deadly riots after the National Assembly approved the changes. The riots have led to six deaths, hundreds of injuries, and widespread destruction, including looted and burnt businesses and road barricades. The indigenous Kanak people fear the new voting rules will dilute their political influence. French authorities are deploying additional military and police forces to protect public buildings and maintain order. New Caledonia, a French territory since 1853, holds significant geopolitical and economic importance to France, especially as a major producer of nickel, essential for electric vehicle batteries. Source: AFP, AP, Reuters So what It is surprising to me that these evacuations have taken so long, it is likely that if the country was not controlled by France then they would have happened much sooner. One trouble, particularly for NZ will be a lack of air assets, limiting the number of trips and likely leading to a reliance on Australia to evacuate some of our citizens. Regardless, this is a great example of why countries, even little old New Zealand need a defence force, because you never know where and when you will need them. Senators urge pilot retirement age rise as experience leads to fewer accidents In the letter published on November 20, 2024, lead signee Senator Marsha Blackburn and her colleagues said that data supported the argument that “experienced pilots have fewer accidents than junior pilots”. According to the letter, the ICAO recently “advanced formal action directed at raising or even eliminating the institution’s recommended pilot retirement age of 65 years” at the 14th Air Navigation Conference. Startup Pakistan
A Saudi aircraft that made an emergency landing at Karachi airport 13 years ago is set to be transferred to Hyderabad on November 21. The 60-ton, 160-foot-long MD 83 aircraft will be moved using a specialized trailer equipped with German technology, managed by New Babar Cargo Movers. Project Director Munir Alam stated that the aircraft will travel from Malir National Highway through Gharo and Thatta to the Civil Aviation Authority’s training center in Hyderabad. To minimize traffic disruption, the aircraft has been divided into two parts, and all necessary permits have been obtained. The MD 83 made an emergency landing on December 25, 2011, due to a malfunctioning nose wheel while en route from Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, to Quetta, carrying a Saudi prince and 72 crew members, all of whom were unharmed. This transfer marks the second aircraft delivered to the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority’s training institute, following the recent transport of a Boeing aircraft. #AircraftTransfer #CivilAviation #Hyderabad #EmergencyLanding #AviationHistory

The heroic efforts displayed by the pilots of Virgin Airlines Flight VA 148 are truly commendable. Following a bird strike that led to an engine fire shortly after taking off from Queenstown, New Zealand, the Boeing 737-800 jet was skillfully diverted, ensuring the safety of all on board. This incident is yet another example to highlight the critical need for effective wildlife hazard management plans to enhance aviation safety. Proactive measures and comprehensive hazard management strategies are essential to prevent such occurrences and safeguard both passengers and crew. Following a bird strike, there's a comprehensive investigation process that may not be widely known. The incident is reported to aviation authorities and wildlife teams. Evidence like bird remains or "snarge" is collected and identified, sometimes with airport biologists' help or DNA testing. The aircraft is assessed for damage, and wildlife management plans are reviewed and improved to prevent future incidents. Let's continue to prioritize and improve our wildlife hazard management efforts to ensure safer skies. #AviationSafety #BirdStrikePrevention #AviationHeroes #SafeSkies #VirginAirlines #AviationNews #BirdStrike

Australian Federation of Air Pilots (AFAP)
[FREE TO READ] "Fume events" are underreported, with a spokesperson for the Australian Federation of Air Pilots (AFAP) explaining that dangerous and potentially deadly #fumes on aircraft, especially older planes, are a much bigger problem than anyone realises. “The AFAP would like to see the Civil Aviation Safety Authority take this issue more seriously, including insisting that high-grade air filters be made mandatory for all commercial airliners flying in Australia, and that bleed air systems are redesigned in future aircraft. We should also see appropriate and accurate testing of fumes in aircraft cabins.” Fume events are the result of the long-term design flaw that sees bleed air mixed into cabin air across most aircraft makers, including Boeing and Airbus ... After a fume event on a Qantas National Jet Systems #B717 last year, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau found that airborne contaminants “may result in the rapid onset of incapacitation, which although possibly subtle, can significantly affect the safety of flight”. “Contaminants from bleed air may be being inhaled unknowingly. It’s in the interest of aircrews and passengers that operators take this issue seriously and look for ways of mitigation — but that means spending money.” “The union is calling for aircraft to be refitted with total air filtration and stop using #bleedair that is run over engines.” Global Cabin Air Quality Executive (www.gcaqe.org)- Susan Michaelis PhD, MSc, ATPL, IOSH, IIRSM - IFALPA - Flight Attendants' Association of Australia (FAAA) - IFALPA #pilots #cabincrew #airlinecrew #cabinairfilter #aerotoxicsyndrome #airlines #fumes #cabinairquality

An Aeroplane cleaner was cleaning the Pilot's cockpit when he saw a book titled, "HOW TO FLY AN AEROPLANE FOR BEGINNERS (Volume 1). He opened the first (1st) page, which said: "To start the engine, press the red button...." He did so, and the airplane engine started.... He was happy and opened the next page... "To get the aeroplane moving, press the blue button..."He did so, and the plane started moving at an amazing speed.... He wanted to fly, so he opened the third (3rd) page, which said: To let the aeroplane fly, please press the green button... "He did so, and the plane started to fly.. He was excited..!! After twenty (20) minutes of flying, he was satisfied and wanted to land, so he decided to go to the fourth (4th) page.... And....page four (4) says; "To know how to land an aeroplane, please purchase Volume 2 at the nearest bookshop!" Moral of the Story 1. Never attempt anything without complete information. 2. Half education is not only dangerous but destructive! 3. Stay in your lane; stick to what you know and you are good at.

The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) are currently evaluating the Leonardo AW149 as a potential replacement for the aging Nuri (company designation S-61A-4 Sea King) helicopters used by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF). This decision follows a plan for phased procurement aimed at enhancing the RMAF’s capabilities, including the addition of 24 new helicopters. Airtimes reported that General Tan Sri Mohammad Ab Rahman, Chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces, shared details of this plan during a press conference following the 91st Malaysian Armed Forces Day Parade at Kem Segenting, Port Dickson. According to him, the acquisition will be executed in two phases: “Phase 1 involves 12 units of Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR)-capable utility helicopters, while Phase 2 will see an additional 12 helicopters.” The Malaysian government has expedited the Phase 2 acquisition, with an emphasis on aligning the process with broader defense modernization initiatives. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/gDD27wJx

NSW Rural Fire Service
The #RFS Chinook helicopter has undergone a massive makeover, with aviation specialists working for eight months to install a large belly tank. Now fully operational, the Chinook's capacity has increased to 11,000 litres, the largest water payload of any firefighting helicopter in Australia. With the upgrade, our helicopter can fill faster, deploy more effectively, and conduct night-time operations when fire intensity is typically lower. The Chinook has been instrumental in firefighting efforts in NSW and is one of only a handful of these helicopters in use for firefighting efforts globally. Watch the team take the Chinook from bucket to belly tank below.
