Europe Gets Tough on Packaging Waste: New Regulations on the Horizon The European Union (EU) is taking a significant step towards tackling packaging waste with the recent approval of new packaging regulations. These regulations aim to promote sustainability and create a more circular economy within the bloc. What's in the New Rules? Reduction Targets: The EU has set ambitious reduction targets for packaging waste, aiming for a 5% reduction by 2030, 10% by 2035, and 15% by 2040. Goodbye Single-Use: Certain single-use plastic packaging types will be banned by 2030, including packaging for fresh fruits and vegetables, takeaway food and beverages, and individual condiments. Reusable Push: The regulations encourage the use of reusable packaging, with beverage and takeaway food distributors required to offer customers the option to bring their own containers. Additionally, they aim to have 10% of products offered in reusable packaging by 2030. Recyclability Focus: All packaging, except for lightweight wood, cork, textile, rubber, ceramic, porcelain, and wax, will need to meet strict recyclability criteria. Collection Boost: Member states are mandated to ensure that 90% of materials contained in packaging (plastic, wood, ferrous metals, aluminium, glass, paper, and cardboard) are collected separately by 2029. This could involve deposit-return systems or other solutions. What Does This Mean for Businesses? The new EU regulations have significant implications for businesses operating in the European market. Another important milestone in #recyclability of #packaging: On 29 August 2024, the Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister (ZSVR) published the new minimum standard for #recycling-friendly packaging. It now also recognizes barrier films that include not only polyethylene (PE) and #polyamide (PA) but also ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) for high oxygen barrier as recyclable. These film structures are commonly used for sausage, cheese and meat packaging. For the first time, adhesive-laminated PE/PA film structures are now also recognized as recyclable in the minimum standard. The recently adopted EU Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation #PPWR sets a large number of targets to make packaging and packaging use more sustainable. Targets are a.o. about mandatory percentages for recycled content and packaging reuse. For FIBC's an overarching 40% reuse target is set for 2030! When we know that current reuse % is less than 0,5%, the challenge to get to 40 % by 20230 is enormous. As of today, we need every single day to work towards this 2030 target! 🏆 Europe is again the paper #recycling champion! 🏆   The new monitoring report of the European Paper Recycling Council (EPRC), of which EuPIA is a supporter, has been published. The data shows that in 2023 the recycling rate for all paper products including graphic paper and packaging increased to reach the record high of 79.3%. This places the paper sector on track to reach its long-term commitments. The recycling rate is defined as the ratio between the recycling of ‘Paper for Recycling’ (PfR), including the net trade of ‘PfR’ and the consumption of new paper and board   This again demonstrates that the paper value chain is succesfully working together to create a functioning #circulareconomy for paper and board.   https://lnkd.in/dC3ZJtQ #ink #print

🌟 Today marks a significant milestone in our journey as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) has been approved in the European Parliament's final plenary vote. 🌟 For the first time, binding waste prevention targets will compel EU Member States to implement tangible measures to reduce packaging waste by 15% by 2040. The approval of the PPWR is a resounding win for us, the entire reuse sector, and for the environment and society as a whole 🌍 One notable provision is the reuse and refill obligation for the takeaway HORECA sector (Art. 28a and 28b), which targets the 17,1 billion single-use takeaway cups and 17,9 billion single-use packaging for to-go food used in Europe (ZWE, 2022). This mandate will compel retails, restaurants and fast food chains across the EU to offer and promote reuse and refill options, giving their clients the choice to get food and drinks in a more sustainable packaging 🌱 At sykell, we're proud to be at the forefront of this movement with our CIRCULAR ERP and EINFACH MEHRWEG solutions, providing an efficient reverse logistics system alongside our network of partners, addresses the biggest barrier in the introduction of reusable packaging ♻️💪 What comes next on the regulatory front? On 29 August 2024, the "Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister" (ZSVR) published the new minimum standard for assessing the recyclability of packaging in Germany. All changes from the consultation process have been adopted.
