One of world’s largest floating wind projects seeks consent off UK - A vast 3.6GW floating offshore wind project planned in the UK North Sea has submitted a consent application to the Scottish government. The Ossian floating wind farm announced today that it has submitted its bid to build the massive offshore array. Ossian is a joint venture between Scottish renewables developer SSE Renewables, Japanese conglomerate Marubeni Corporation and Danish fund Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. Ossian would be among the largest floating offshore wind farms globally and, once operational, could generate enough green energy to power up to six million homes annually. Ossian’s development lead, Rich Morris said: “We have submitted a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment report to the Scottish Government’s Marine Directorate, and we’re committed to continuing engagement with the statutory consultees and wider stakeholder community. “We are confident this submission will support the timely delivery of the UK’s largest floating offshore wind farm ensuring Ossian is ready to take full advantage of ongoing grid reforms and National Grid ESO’s move to a ‘first ready, first connected' model. “We have worked hard to reach this significant milestone which is crucial in paving the way for a decarbonised future and supporting the Scottish and UK governments’ net zero targets.” Ossian says that it has undertaken “extensive consultation and investigation work” over the past three years to assess the project’s 858km2 site, which sits 84km off the Aberdeenshire coast. Cadeler Finalizes Installation Contract for ScottishPower’s UK Offshore Wind Farm Cadeler has signed firm contracts for the transportation and installation of wind turbines and foundations for ScottishPower Renewables’ East Anglia Two wind farm, located off the coast of the UK. Under the contract, Cadeler will be responsible for the transportation and installation of both the foundations and 64 15 MW wind turbines for the East Anglia Two project. For this work, the company will utilize one of its new A-class vessels alongside an O-class vessel from its existing fleet. “This project highlights that our strategic decisions align with our customers’ needs and current market demands. With our six newbuilds on the way, Cadeler will provide even greater flexibility and enhanced efficiency for our clients, offering solutions for increasingly complex projects,” said Mikkel Gleerup, CEO of Cadeler. Cadeler has secured contracts estimated to be worth between EUR 360 million and EUR 382 million, with offshore operations scheduled to begin in 2027. The company’s partnership with ScottishPower Renewables for East Anglia Two reflects the execution of firm contracts, covering a portion of the work initially outlined in a reservation agreement disclosed by Cadeler in May 2024. The announcement, made on 5 November, comes just weeks after ScottishPower Renewables’ GBP 4 billion East Anglia Two offshore wind farm achieved success in the UK Government’s Contracts for Difference Allocation Round 6 (AR6). “Following our recent auction success, we’ve been moving quickly to secure the supply chain for East Anglia Two. It’s great to have Cadeler onboard, supporting this essential clean energy project that will power nearly one million homes with green electricity,” said Charlie Jordan, CEO of ScottishPower Renewables. “East Anglia is at the core of our offshore wind operations in the UK, an essential region with one operational wind farm, another under construction, and now the supply chain confirmed for our third project. This allows us to progress toward delivering a cleaner, greener, and better future, faster.” The 960 MW project will be located in the southern region of the North Sea, off the east coast of England, and is expected to feature 15 MW wind turbines, with the capacity to power almost one million homes annually. At the end of October 2024, ScottishPower Renewables, Iberdrola’s UK arm, signed contracts with Sif Netherlands to supply 64 monopiles, as well as a joint venture between Sif and Smulders to deliver 64 transition pieces (TPs). Production of the TPs and foundations is planned to commence in the second half of 2026.

Completion of Viking Wind Farm means UK's combined onshore and offshore wind capacity is now capable of powering over 26 million homes, according to trade body RenewableUK. The UK's combined onshore and offshore wind power capacity has stormed passed the 30GW mark, with the recent opening of a major new 106 turbine project on the Shetland Islands. Total electricity generation capacity from the UK's onshore and offshore turbines now stands over 30,299MW, which it said was enough to power more than 26 million average homes. The UK's fleet of wind farms is now capable of avoiding over 35 million tonnes of CO2 emissions a year from fossil fuel generation. Leading ports across Scotland have today launched the Scottish Offshore Wind Ports Alliance (SOWPA), a strategic alliance and progressive forum created to optimise the opportunities from offshore wind. The alliance will optimise large-scale operations, enhance regional competitiveness and address common & complex industry challenges through knowledge sharing and collaboration. Iain Sinclair, SOWPA’s Chair, said: “It is widely recognised that ports have a critical enabling role in the industrialisation and deployment of offshore wind in the UK. Today’s announcement demonstrates that ports are motivated to take the initiative, work proactively and diligently together, and align with the whole offshore wind ecosystem, to maximise the localisation of the supply chain requirements. “SOWPA’s collective capability, knowledge and expertise is a world-leading value proposition. We have a willingness and appetite to enhance our competitiveness, address supply chain challenges and deliver against Scotland and the UK’s offshore wind ambitions.” Offshore wind is set to play a critical role in Scotland’s targets to reach net zero emissions by 2045. The existing 10GW of installed offshore wind capacity is set to triple through the ScotWind leasing round, adding a further 30GW to this total over the next 10 years.
