Earlier this week, our own Harald (Harry) Kroeger spoke with Handelsblatt about our new collaboration with high-tech laser systems expert TRUMPF, which is great validation for SiMa.ai’s differentiated complete ML system-on-chip. “Laser specialist Trumpf is the first German company to enter into a strategic partnership with the Silicon Valley start-up,” writes Martin-W. Buchenau of Handelsblatt. “Together, the two companies are developing AI software that improves laser applications…the (SiMa.ai) chip enables 5,000 images per second to be processed and evaluated during camera monitoring of a laser application. Such real-time testing can replace separate and complex testing procedures in electric car production. As part of the 32nd #FED Conference in Ulm, Germany, the 'Fachverband Elektronikdesign und -fertigung e. V. ' (professional organization for electronics design and manufacturing) presented the prestigious #PCB Design Awards for the seventh time. The award recognizes #component designers for excellent work in three different categories. Our colleague Udo Cochet (left) was honored by the jury in the category '3D/Construction Space'. PCB (Printed Circuit Board) design is a crucial step in electronics development that enables the physical realization of a circuit. This involves the arrangement of components and the connection through conductive paths in order to transmit electrical signals. A key challenge is to design the circuit in such a way that problems such as signal interference, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and thermal stress are avoided. In high-frequency circuits in particular, the conductor paths must be precisely dimensioned and positioned to minimize signal losses. Udo has designed a data acquisition unit consisting of four stacked components, which is used in our #inspectiontools. It records and stores sensor data on anomalies and defects. The data acquisition unit is integrated into a modular, #electromechanical system and, therefore, has clear mechanical specifications. This meant special requirements for the PCB design in terms of construction space. "There was a lot to consider with this component and the design repeatedly presented me with challenges. So I'm all the more pleased that we were successful in the end and even won an award," reports Udo. Qcision (formerly Feintool Technologie AG) and the Fraunhofer Institute IWU have a longstanding partnership. “We have worked together on machine development multiple times in the past.“ explains Prof. Dr. Verena Kräusel, Head of Business Unit Forming Technology at the Fraunhofer IWU in Chemnitz. “The goal of expanding our collaboration with the FB one fineblanking press is to advance the series production of high-precision metallic bipolar plates. We aim to leverage Qcision's experience in bipolar plate production and fineblanking technology.” Markus Schaltegger, CEO of Qcision, sees the collaboration as a flagship project. “With the FB one, Fraunhofer IWU has decided on a state-of-the-art fineblanking press that meets all relevant requirements for the successful series production of metallic bipolar plates. Rigidity, high precision, energy-efficient operation, and flexible usability are particularly important.” 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 The use of the FB one fineblanking press in the "Referenzfrabik.H2“ is part of a development partnership. Both the Fraunhofer Institute IWU and Qcision firmly believe that hydrogen is a key component of the energy systems of the future. Electrolyzers store energy in the form of hydrogen, while fuel cells use it, for example, to power trucks in a climate-friendly way. 📝 Every year, the SEMI 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 meets in the North America region as part of SEMICON WEST. Bert Müller, our colleague, took part in this meeting as he does every year and has brought along a short review. So here's some fresh #SEMI 𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 from the meeting for you today: 💡   𝗗𝗗𝗔 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗔 (𝗘𝗗𝗔) 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱.   🔹 The task force is currently working hard to finalize the last points of the new Freeze III. 3 of the 5 ballots (these are the elaborated standards) discussed were confirmed by the task force at this meeting. These will now be submitted to the SEMI Committee for a decision on publication. 🔹 The task force identified shortcomings in the details of two other ballots, which will now be revised in the next cycle. 🔹 The main focus of the task force is currently on preparing for the third pre-test of the new EDA Freeze III, which is due to take place in November.   𝗔𝗕𝗜𝗙 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲:   🔹 There are numerous communication standards that are based on E30 (GEM) technology. These include the unofficial designation GEM 300, which includes the standards E5, E30, E37, E39, E40, E87, E90 and E94. It also includes other standards such as E84, E142, E116 and E157, which are useful for many devices, as well as special device model standards such as E122, E123 and some others. Without guidance and extensive expertise, it can be difficult to know which standards should be implemented as part of a facility's interfaces.   🔹 In wafer fabrication, the GEM 300 standard set has been used very successfully for many years to facilitate factory automation. Other fabs that are not part of semiconductor front-end manufacturing strive for the same benefits, but it is not always clear which standards should be used due to the differences in manufacturing. This task force aims to help address the specifics of this manufacturing in the SEMI standards and provide guidance on the application of the SEMI standards.   𝗚𝗘𝗠𝟯𝟬𝟬 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲:   🔹 This task force is responsible for the E5, E30, E37, E39, E40, E87, E90 and E94 standards. A big thank you to Dr. Siegmar Schoser, Project Director of Cooperation and External Sourcing at Bosch, for his insightful session at I.S.E.S. EU Power 2024! Session Title: Raw Material Impact on the Transition to 200mm SiC Device Production Abstract: Dr. Schoser discussed the challenges and opportunities surrounding the transition to 200mm Silicon Carbide (SiC) device production. With the historical limitations in the availability of suitable SiC substrates, significant efforts have been made to secure sufficient raw materials for 150mm device manufacturing. As the industry shifts towards 200mm production, concerns about stable availability, maturity, pricing, geopolitical factors, and technological innovations are paramount. Dr. Schoser highlighted the varying focus of raw material suppliers on 200mm versus 150mm production and discussed the correlation between suppliers' efforts in 200mm crystal growth development and material quality. He also provided predictions on the raw material landscape for the next 3-5 years.
