A conversation point in Germany is the desire to be more competitive within the gaming industry. With opportunities like cash prizes with Der Deutsche Computerspielpreis | Der DCP and game - German Games Industry Association there are active efforts to provide funding to studios and make Germany more attractive for game development. I did a talk during Devcom in Cologne. So many young faces with "Student Tickets" (they made me feel a bit older) But honestly, I love Gen Z ❤️ Before my fellow industry veterans start grumbling... Let’s be real: We’ve had our time as the pioneers. We’ve seen the gaming world evolve in ways we couldn’t have imagined. Examples: 1. We REMEMBER the days of pixelated art. ↳ So we value how far the tech has come. 2. We KNOW what it’s like to build a game. ↳ So we value the craft and the hard work. 3. We SEE the new generation stepping in. ↳ And they’re bringing fresh energy & ideas. I could keep going... But the point is: We led the way, but now it’s Gen Z’s turn. They grew up with gaming as a way of life. ↳ It’s in their DNA. They dream big. They are fearless. They are creative. They are ready to push the boundaries. And I’m here for it. SO many of the students I met at Devcom are the future of the gaming industry. They’re the ones who will take what we started and run with it. The future of gaming is in good hands. Cheers to Gen Z. We are underway with our next assignment, which is local split-screen multiplayer. I had thought there would be far more complex systems for creating a split-screen game, however, it turns out it is fairly easy when using the new input system with its built-in input manager. There was no need to set up any special coding for managing the two cameras separately, or a need to set up different render planes to render each camera to an individual render texture, just select the allow split-screen option and set up keys in the control map as joining actions. And enable the option to join the game via said actions. And then we have a split-screen multiplayer, well a very basic one, now we need to focus on the rest of the systems and mechanics that need to be added to the system. #srudentgamedev #indiegamedev #madewithunity

I’m planning to buy a PS5 Pro, but I don’t understand Sony’s decision to price it at €800. This decision seems wrong to me. Maybe you have some thoughts on why they made it? - PS5 is selling worse than PS4: PS5 sold less than PS4 during the same period (30 million vs. 37.1 million). - Pandemic potential not realized: The pandemic should have helped sales, but even with that, the numbers are lower than the previous generation. - Fewer people upgraded to PS5 than PS4: Only 25% of PS4 owners upgraded to PS5, while 40% moved from PS3 to PS4. - No disc drive: Without a disc drive, those who bought physical games are less likely to switch to the Pro version. - Smaller potential PS5 Pro buyer base: All the points above suggest this. - High PS5 Pro price relative to income: The median household income in the US was $59k when the PS4 Pro launched at $399. Today, the PS5 Pro costs $700 while income is $70k. So while I was recovering from my illness and defending myself from bullies (prev post: https://lnkd.in/eQ3jrNTQ) I also did a lot of neat tech work on a game called Orcs Must Die: Unchained I wrote a few SIMD optimized collision detection routines for interacting with breakables and physics props. This is demonstrated in the video below when: - The player shoots the bushes/grass and foliage debris flies off. - The player jumps in the pool and water ripples form - The player shoots tables, barrels, pictures, and other breakables. I felt a custom collision system here was a good fit as Unreal 3's was expensive and the art team wanted more interactivity in the game. The SDI München invited me to host a two-day workshop on #videogames #localization, and since I had never been to Munich, I of course accepted. After I spent some time exploring the city, meeting up with a few local colleagues (with whom I shared amazing glittery cake), and taking a long walk through the park near my hotel, the day of the workshop approached. Having learned a lot about the challenges in game localization while working with people new to the field, I focused the workshop primarily on writing skills — dedicating a huge chunk of time to genre studies, idioms, slang terms, and obscure cultural references. In my experience, the difference between a merely acceptable and a great translation of gaming content doesn't hinge upon how well one can render placeholder variables into grammatically sound sentences, but rather how close the translated text captures the intent, tone, and atmosphere of the original. One can always learn the mechanics of writing, but true mastery, to me, involves a deep understanding both of the genre and the nature of the game (or anything really) one is working on. These were the finer points I wanted to impart to my students — even though 12 hours were barely enough to scratch the surface. I was amazed at and delighted by the quality of my students' translations and their discussions during group assignments, even after an intense eight hours on the second day — and in spite (or because) of the strange sample sentences I had devised. I hope I managed to give these young women a glance into the fascinating and ever-changing kinds of texts that can be found in videogames. But I would have been remiss if I hadn't also taught them about the state of the industry as a whole (the good and the bad), the importance of #TranslatorsInThecredits, how to calculate and negotiate fair rates, and why it is important to understand the legal framework in which we, as freelance contractors, operate. I believe it is important to stay humble. Fortunately, that has been easy for me because I make plenty of mistakes 😅 I try to be transparent about my journey as a solo game developer and publisher. I do this for many reasons, but the main one is because my experiences might someday help someone else to avoid, or inspire them to overcome, similar challenges. For the rest of you, hopefully you can get a chuckle out of this story 🤦‍♂️ 1️⃣ Earlier this year, I launched my first PC game, Annuit Coeptis, into Early Access on Steam. One of my goals with this title was to learn the Steam publishing backend process; there's really no other way to obtain this specialized knowledge that I'm aware. 2️⃣ More recently, maybe a month ago, I prepared and released a free demo build of the game. In the several weeks this has been available I had noticed a large number of downloads of the demo but a very low average play length. I could speculate, but without anything to compare to on this scale I had no way of drawing a real conclusion about what this meant. This was another one of my goals with this title - to determine some baseline analytics. 3️⃣ This week, a YouTuber (his channel is named Final Boss Editing) played my game in a video review. In the first encounter he encountered a soft-lock that prevented any further progress. Now those numbers made sense 🤔 4️⃣ The bug turned out to be an interaction with Steam Achievements. Disabling the code that linked the demo to Achievements corrected the problem. Steam actually does recommend not using Achievements for demos; I ignored this advice and here I am lol. So one thing I can take away from this is to pay better attention to the suggestions of the marketplace to which I am publishing. The other thing I am very grateful for is the feedback I got from that video. It didn't hype up my game and it didn't present it in the best light. It provided something even more useful - the chance to correct my error. As a solo dev, I'm glad to get any feedback, good or bad, because I don't have a playtest and QA team. I don't have an inventory of PCs with different specs to test performance. Everything I know about the user experience is what I get by playing the game myself, and what I hear from people that are generous enough (or angry enough) to take the time to share their thoughts. So to everyone who has tried the game and given feedback - thank you again 🙏 and I would request that if you play a game, especially a small or indie title, give a little feedback. If your feedback is mainly critical and you don't want to harm a small studio's algorithm placement, reach out to them by another channel. In the most real and literal way, I could not do this without all of you.

🎮 Gaming is the hidden champion of team building exercises! ⚡ To be honest, I hate the (typical German) trend of constantly having to argue for the value of playing video games. There's value in it just being entertainment! But if you want to go there, it's quite easy to show what positive impact video games can have, especially when played in a team.   Ever played Counter Strike in a team? Or League of Legends? If so, you will know that communication is crucial for success. And that communication needs to be precise and efficient.   Gaming (and especially esports) is a great way of bringing people together in a team to achieve a common goal (= winning!) and have them realize that this only works if there's a strategy in place in which everyone fulfills a specific role, sticks with a plan and communicates efficiently if it's necessary to adapt the plan to changing circumstances.   What better way to bring a team together than to have them do this? It's no surprise that we already see a lot of companies participating in company esports leagues (definitely reach out to Gian Luca Vitale, Pia Büßecker and Tobias Scholz if that's a topic that interests you). 🤝 A lot of amazing companies also regularly book team events at LVL to have a fun night out that includes video games, great food and drinks - with the underlying effect of bringing the team together as part of a collaborative unit through the amazing super power of video games.   From top tier game publishers (where it's kinda obvious) to large German banks to the most prestigious tech companies on the face of the earth - we've had them all at LVL for their team nights, whether that's just a regular get together, an internal esports tournament or a fun-filled Christmas party.   ⭐ We have a streamlined team building package available at LVL that I'm happy to share in case this interests you. Looking forward to Gamescom this week, here's a few tips for folks traveling into Cologne 👀 I'm a Gamescom newb but have a few years in Germany under my belt. ☕️ Coffee is generally espresso based, but you can ask for a "filterkaffee" if you want drip. In specialty coffee shops this can be more expensive as they give you a whole carafe. If you take milk with it you may have to request "kuhmilch" – literal translation is Cow's milk. 🍻Koln is known for it Kolsch, they are very small beers and they will keep bringing them down until you tell them to stop (as is tradition). 🥙 Kebabs are the late night snack, currywurst is a great shout for the afternoon. Lots of places will do veggie versions too. For Gamescom like any conference try to get your vegetables in though! 🗣️German is obviously the most spoken language but many people also speak English in the cities. Hot tip is that W in German is pronounced as "vee" which brings me on to supermarkets! 🛒 Rewe is my supermarket of choice, lots of great options there, it's pronounced "Ray - ve". Nothing compared to Dunnes, M&S or Whole Foods though. 💧Somewhat confusingly "Classic" water is sparkling, as is "Medium" and "Leise", still water is "Naturelle". You can drink tap water here. 💊 If you're unfortunate enough to get ill doctors and pharmacists here are a little more conservative with painkillers and other medications, you may be sent home to get some Krauter tea if you're feeling unwell. I do find that vitamens here are much cheaper than in other parts of the world. 💸 Cash is king in Germany, so always have some money on you, especially if you're visiting bars and restaurants. You will also need to specify that you want a receipt for your expense sheet. We're not the biggest tippers here and servers appreciate any extras. I normally round up to the nearest few euros. 🚊Public transport, infinitely better than the US. Your gamescom pass covers travel on this as well I believe. 🍶Most glass bottles have "Pfand" which is the deposit system, if you buy a bottle of water you can return it in the store, or leave it beside a public bin outside. Homeless people will often pick them up and return them. You may have to pay extra for pfand in some bars too for their glasses, you can get that money back when you leave.
