💭 Reports of the last week (16.09.24 - 20.09.24) A report about the casual market in H1'24 from AppMagic is curious for the reason that Match-3 is showing the highest success rate among reviewed subgenres. Yes, the "success" was measured as $50k/month, which is far from being a sustainable revenue in the bloody ocean of match-3 titles. Still, the data shows that there is room for new titles. For example, those pursuing the male audience - Chrome Valley Customs & Truck Star. CVC is lacking in terms of growth, true, but there are underserved audiences in what many thought was an already populated market. We also have a rapidly growing sub-genre - a sort puzzle, which grew 12-fold in revenue since H1'23. It's already a very competitive genre (160 games have been released in the first half of 2024, and only 3 of them have been able to grow to $50k/month revenue). A great example of hybridization of hypercasual genre, and great implementation of IAP that helped to boost the LTV of users. What I find great is that there is a motion. After quite stagnant recent years with only a couple of breakthroughs, it seems that more titles popping up here and there. 📍 2024 Drake Star Global Gaming Report ➡ Q1 2024 Summary 2024 has started on a strong note with multiple high value deals and the momentum extended in early Q2 with Embracer continuing to divest major businesses. Existing and new VCs continue to raise more capital focused on gaming investments (A16Z’s Gaming Fund II: $600M and BITKRAFT III: $275M) and public markets have improved since bottoming out in October last year • With 47 announced deals and disclosed deal value of $2.4B, M&A activity continues to pick-up and was higher than any quarter last year. CVC/Haveli acquired Jagex ($1.1B) and Take-Two picked up Gearbox from Embracer ($460M). Volume in the mid to small size deals segment with mostly undisclosed deal value increased significantly • Private financings reported a notable uptick in Q1 with over $2.4B raised through 188 deals, reversing a downward trend in deal volume since mid 2022. Disney invested $1.5B in Epic Games, Build a Rocket Boy raised $110M and True Gamers raised $45M • Early-stage financings continue to be the major portion of total deals while the mid to late-stage deal activity remained low. With the recent upswing in the blockchain market, early-stage blockchain deals were 40% of the total deal volume. For investments over the last 12 months, BITKRAFT led the VC league table, followed by Andreessen Horowitz, Griffin Gaming, Play Ventures and Vgames ➡ 2024 Outlook With a strong start of the year, we expect M&A activity to steadily increase in 2024. Savvy/Scopely, Tencent, Take-Two and Playtika are expected to be some of the active buyers. As we predicted last year, PE firms’ interest in the gaming sector has increased (i.e., Jagex/CVC deal) and given the attractive public company valuations, we except several acquisitions and take-private deals to be led by PE firms in the coming quarters • With funding trends finally breaching the downward trend and growing for Q1, we expect overall growth in private financings during the year. While early-stage companies will continue to dominate the deal volume, we expect a modest increase in mid / late-stage deals. AI, mixed reality, platform and tools continue to be hot segments   • We saw the first successful consumer tech IPO in Reddit this quarter and we anticipate that several IPO ready gaming companies such as Discord and EPIC are starting to plan for a listing in the second half of 2024 or 2025

🎮 Are celebrity partnerships worth it for mobile games? Here’s my take! You might have seen Erling Haaland's new Clash of Clans character. 🌟  Do you think this will push other mobile game brands to sign big name partnerships too? And are these celebrity partnerships actually profitable? Two key points stand out from the Haaland × Clash of Clans collaboration: 1. They selected a celebrity respected in their field, who genuinely connects with the brand. 🤝 2. They introduced an in-game asset based on a real person, which goes beyond simple advertising. 🎁 The second point is crucial for ROI. While celebrity integrations boost branding—especially when linked to a personal story—they're not always the most profitable route. 📉 Using celebrity content across all channels complicates measuring the impact of these expensive partnerships. That's why custom in-game assets are valuable, they: - Encourage downloads and ongoing engagement.  - Provide an added touchpoint to measure and attribute the performance impact of the partnership.  (You can look at how many times a custom challenge was played, how these items sold compared to the average in-game item, and so on, to establish real impact beyond reach.) I've seen custom in-game assets boost ROI by up to 279%! 🔥 But is this really relevant for brands that don't have Supercell-sized budgets? Custom integrations aren't limited to celebrities; I've had positive results with YouTube influencers, who often have more engaged audiences. This targeted reach facilitates measurable impact, even with budgets as small as $50,000. 💡 Like any strategy, it is a question of iterating, testing, and understanding what works well before really scaling and investing big. For example, I only learned the importance of avoiding ‘seasonal themed’ custom characters after a 6-figure deal with a mega influencer nearly fell through. 🎅 After what had been months of work from multiple teams on our end for a Christmas-themed custom asset and challenge, the creator decided they were unhappy with their video last minute and refused to upload. We ultimately had to rework everything and delay the collaboration to Q1. And while that seemed like an absolute nightmare at the time, we ended up working with the same creator 6 times following that- all because the performance impact was unmatched! 💸 Besides, we learned how to refine our strategy and minimize the risks. So while my experience working with some of the biggest youtubers has seen a LOT of ups and downs, I always advise my clients to scale to the point of partnering with them for custom integrations! 🔍 If you've worked with celebrity or influencer in-game integrations, I’d love to hear your experiences. Simon Carless of GameDiscoverCo took a look into Steam's performance of 2024 thus far. Some Insights: ➤ Less than half of the Top 20 in terms of gross revenue are free-to-play, though many other titles offer paid content with IAP and or DLC such as Call of Duty HQ and Elden Ring. The Top 10 are an even split between F2P and premium. ➤ Seven new games on Steam in 2024 grossed over $40 million, with Helldivers 2 and Palworld being standout successes. ➤ Valve's own games, like Counter-Strike 2 and DOTA 2, continue to perform exceptionally well. ➤ When comparing new releases to older games, it's clear that competition is fierce. Only about 15% of new games made it into the $500k-$5m revenue range, while a significant portion of high earners came from older titles. This highlights the "long tail" of revenue, where older games continue to generate steady income over time. ➤ Manor Lords, published by Hooded Horse Inc. and made by solo dev Slavic Magic already made over $56m. You love to see it. Revenue Growth: Year on year, more games are grossing between $500k and $10m, though the total number of games on Steam has also increased by 22%. While there’s more money being spent on PC games, the bulk of revenue still comes from older, established titles. New games face stiff competition, and success often hinges on standing out in a crowded market.
