How can we create an innovation-friendly environment for #diagnostics despite increasing cost pressure?   This was one of the questions our colleague Dr. Henrike Stutzki posed to the distinguished panel on "Affordable Diagnostics" at the Diagnostics-4-Future Conference: Dr. Christoph Seger, Labordiagnostic St. Gallen West Bastian Hennig, Roche Prof. Dr. Christian Johner, Johner Institut GmbH Steffen Buchholz, Bundesministerium für Gesundheit Dr. Florian Brandt, IKK Südwest   It was an exciting discussion in which all relevant players were able to contribute their perspectives: manufacturers, laboratories, health insurers, politicians and regulators.   What became clear: structures need to be created that allow young companies to successfully bring their innovations to the market. As Christopher Johner pointed out, the U.S. is a good role model since under the FDA, the certification process is faster, more predictable and startups in particular receive some guidance from the agency.   Many thanks to BioLAGO e.V. – the health network, Prof. Dr. Martin Elmlinger and Michael Statnik for the great organization of this valuable event about the future of the diagnostics industry!

“According to prognoses, in the next 10 years one in every three jobs will not be filled”, says Dr. Sandra Zimmermann on labor shortages in Germany in an interview with Radio Bremen Zwei.   WifOR Institute's Head of Scientific Dialogue elaborated on how workforce deficits are posing an enormous challenge to the German economy and society – and what solutions can help fix this.   As the population ages due to demographic change and the baby boomer generation retires, the impact on employment is felt. “More than one fourth of the active workforce is leaving the labor market,” explains Zimmermann, adding that the gap between supply and demand of workers “will grow.”   The health sector provides one clear example. Not only is the demand for patient care greater due to the growing elderly population, but it is also becoming increasingly difficult to find suitable personnel in the field. Meanwhile, the current workforce is under pressure: when factors such as salaries, mental health, and shifts deteriorate, the prospect of retaining employees decreases.   How can the issue be addressed? Better working conditions and better integration policies for migrant talent are some of the key ideas. We are proud to annouce that our project "SOLE Sensors (SOLES)" got nominated for the KWF Kärntner Wirtschaftsförderungsfonds Innovation Award 2024 (Innovations- und Forschungspreis des Landes Kärnten)! 🏆 The project, lead by Tutku Beduk, promises a new era in electronics at your feet. ❓ What is the purpose of intelligent shoe soles? Through sensors printed directly onto shoe soles, it is possible to measure and analyze a person's gait, foot positioning, weight distribution or sore spots. This data can come in handy for physiotherapy, orthopedics or sports medicine and will allow doctors to tailor soles and shoes to their patients' precise needs. The SOLES project team from the Advanced Sensors and Electronics Technologies Research Unit around Tutku, Jürgen Kosel, Sherjeel Khan, Mani Teja Vijjapu and Emily Bezerra is developing technologies to print these sensors directly onto shoe soles using additive manufactoring, thus decreasing material loss and enabling a more sustainable production.
