What percentage of people visit your website each day and then leave without contacting you? 95% or more? If you knew how to contact them, would 95% or more prospects increase your profits? Now, consider just how valuable all that lost traffic is to your business. Let's say that each day you get at least 2,000 people visiting your website. Let's also keep things modest and say that you're selling just one product for $10 and your goal is to sell more of that product. On average, let's assume that you have a 5% conversion rate, because 95% of the people leave your website without buying from you. 2,000 people * $10 = $20,000. You're currently making 5% of $20,000 = $1,000 per day. You're currently losing 95% of $20,000 = $19,000 per day. You're currently making 365 * $1,000 = $365,000 per year. You're currently losing 365 * $19,000 = $6,935,000 per year!!! Read that last line again. That's nearly $7MM in lost profit potential each year! Google Ads is overcharging most brands on their budget. Here’s how it happens (and how to solve it): Branded keywords have been a reliable revenue source for eCom brands. They target people searching for your brands. Think about terms like “Nike shoes” or “Apple watch” They’re cheap, low-competition and highly profitable. But after auditing 300+ accounts, we found that many brands are overspending on this traffic. Their ROAS seems decent… But they’re wasting a big chunk of their budget. And the biggest reason for this? Poor segmentation. Many brands fail to segment branded from non-branded campaigns. As a result, they can’t optimize their branded campaigns properly. And their branded ads end up showing in non-branded queries. On top of that, a lot of brands rely on Google’s existing branded exclusion tool. But it’s not enough. From what we’ve seen, it opens the door to irrelevant traffic and unqualified clicks. And that leads to a lot of wasted ad spend. Brands also give too much trust in automated campaigns like pMax. These campaigns are supposed to make things more efficient But they turn branded keywords into a bidding war to drive costs up. Here’s the truth: Google’s priority is its own revenue. The algorithm hates it when you dominate the auction. So it introduced inefficiencies to drive up your costs. You pay more to compete on the traffic you should already own. So, what can you do about it? 1. Stop mixing branded and non-branded traffic in the same campaigns. Segment them and tailor your approach for each. This alone can dramatically improve your ad performance. 2. Build and maintain your negative keyword lists. It’s not fancy, but it works. We have 1000s of negative competitor keywords for each client. It does take some work to build this list. But it’s the most reliable strategy out there. 3. Stay away from broad match for branded terms. Leverage the brand exclusion tool, but don’t rely on it. Keep an eye on your search term report. Don’t use Performance Max for brand campaigns. This is logical - you're targeting customers at their highest eagerness to buy. But allocating a portion of spend to Awareness and Consideration during peak has surprisingly significant benefits. With lower competition and healthier CPMs, higher funnel activity becomes remarkably efficient in November... ...with Consideration ROAS boosted by 106% MoM. Don't get us wrong - Conversion should still be the core of your BFCM approach. Last year, Conversion still produced by far the most revenue in November, while maintaining the same ROAS, so it remains the best objective for scale.
