“A strong, competitive Europe: unlocking the potential of securitisation” - we had the pleasure to present the report, compiled by leading industry experts and coordinated by the Bankenverband and True Sale International GmbH. The final report has been handed over to the German Federal Ministry of Finance at the ESMT Berlin yesterday.   From the report and the following panel discussion, I believe following points became clear and are worth to highlight: 👉 We see broad consensus on the shortcomings of the current regulation and what needs to be done 👉 Improving the regulation will have a positive impact in the short, medium and long term, allowing the market to play its part in financing the transition. 👉 There is no need for a pan-European securitisation platform with public money support or state subsidies. 👉 Securitisation alone will not solve all challenges around the transition. I am delighted to see my views on the necessity of a comprehensive European banking system published in Handelsblatt today. To be sure, much has been achieved in the initial efforts to create a banking union. The Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) is widely seen as a success, but European authorities must now undergo a fundamental shift in mindset, moving away from prioritizing stability at any cost and instead also consider the importance of growth and competitiveness. Currently, capital markets only cover 30% of Europe's corporate financing needs, while in the United States the figure is 70%. Therefore, it is crucial to have robust banks that can complement the efforts of the Capital Markets Union. Implementing significant changes is never an easy task, but I emphasize four key areas that the European Commission can focus on: creating a tangible solution for European Deposit Insurance, establishing a comprehensive common backstop, facilitating the flow of cross-border bank liquidity, and undertaking another round of harmonization of national laws in areas such as insolvency and consumer protection. Great start here! Sebastian Heinz was spot on about the necessity of AI strategies in finance, how regulation is slowing us down and why we lost the foundational model race (at least those based on LLMs). Honestly, I hope we don't overly hide behind regulation, but rather discuss how we can make the most out of AI in the coming days. Great to share my views in German-language publication e-fundresearch.com on how EU firms can best navigate and meet the requirements of the new Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA) coming into effect on 17 January 2025. With emerging frameworks like DORA, it’s clear that regulatory bodies are increasingly expecting financial services firms to give operational resilience the same focus as financial resilience. But ‘being resilient’ isn’t simply a tick-box exercise…..to be effective both digital and operational resilience need to be truly embedded as part of firms’ culture and risk governance frameworks. From optimizing sales to enhancing customer experiences, AI is unlocking the power of vast datasets to deliver more relevant insights and offers—benefiting both banks and their customers.   ⚖️ Of course, with great power comes the need for regulation. Strengthening Transatlantic Relations & Europe’s Strategic Position Yesterday, alongside Christian Sewing, Bettina Orlopp and Heiner Herkenhoff from the Board of the Association of German Banks, we hosted a working lunch with German Members of the Bundestag during the Annual Meetings of the IMF and World Bank here in Washington, D.C.. Christian Sewing emphasized the importance of Europe’s role in the global economy, particularly as the U.S. elections approach. The potential shifts in U.S. policy, regardless of the election’s outcome, highlight a clear message for Europe: we must invest in our own strategic Infrastructure and resilience. From defense and technology to energy and capital markets, Europe’s competitiveness relies on a unified approach and bold investments.
