🔋 Exciting Insights from last week's Advanced Battery Power Conference There have been 2 days full of battery innovation and research at Münster with many talks, interesting speeches and high attendance numbers (>1,100). We FEV Europe GmbH had a stand at the booth and were able to hold many interesting discussions thanks to Bernd Hömberg, Prof. Martin Winter and Dirk Uwe Sauer. Here are my key findings: 📌 The most important prerequisites for EU competitiveness in the battery sector are low energy costs and industry funding. Current support from public authorities needs to be improved. In particular, EU research has made some gains in the development of solid-state battery cells, but CN consortia of cell suppliers will follow quickly 📌 Future cell formats will be mainly prismatic and cylindrical parallel, pouch with lower share 📌 Cell chemistry is evolving: LFP is further gaining traction; sodium-ion is becoming more interesting and NMC remains the choice for high energy applications. Interestingly, Solid-State technologies not have been in main focus beside the interest of the Chinese Suppliers forming a consortia… 📌 Main safety issues of last years due to thermal runaway / propagation are under control at system level, energy density vs. fast charging under discussion and cost reduction expected 📌 2nd life applications will be a niche; recycling and reprocessing will play an important role at the end of a battery product's life as customers in all sectors expect best performance 📌 Recycling is complex and not yet standardized, overcapacity is expected in the EU, but with little know-how; we can assume that the cost of battery cells will have to be increased in the future due to recycling, which will affect the attractiveness of the technologies; with the greatest negative impact on LFP, as the recycling of LFP is complex and the recycled raw materials are of low value 📌 the European gigafactories are starting operations, but initially see themselves as (fast) followers of the established suppliers => Battery production remains a challenge 📌 CO2 footprint of Li-Ion batteries is decreasing further to already <30kg CO2 / kWh with using renewable energy     Further I had the honor to lead a session for "battery application" together with Jörg Huslage with four interesting presentations 1️⃣ "Premium Platform Electric (PPE): development of superior charging performance" by Bernhard Rieger 2️⃣ "Battery-in-the cloud for modelbased adaptive control strategies" by Dr. Gerald Rämisch 3️⃣ "Safety Requirements of Stationary Energy Storage Systems for the North American Market" by Juergen Boeck 4️⃣ "Application Driven Differences in Design and Operation of Large-Scale Batteries" by Susanne Lehner 🙏 Thanks to all participants, speakers and organizers for the great event! #Battery #cell #fev

Today I had the opportunity to meet with Mike Laudien, head of our team #IAVFahrzeugsicherheit at IAV GMBH, and his team. Their expertise in vehicle safety is well-documented on their website (https://lnkd.in/eb9kq-GZ), emphasising the crucial work they do. Their approach combines real-world crash tests, deep engineering know-how and advanced sensor technology, making significant contributions to the field of #VehicleSafety. It was instructive to witness their commitment to improving road safety firsthand. Under Mike's leadership, the team has made substantial progress in recent months, particularly in their renewed emphasis on pushing the borders of vehicle safety — an embodiment of IAV's customer-centric approach. An integral part of this team is the crash test dummy—a vital tool in studying and refining vehicle safety. So, time to raise the attention on one of these silent but essential coworkers. Handelsblatt Exklusive: Following the software deal between Volkswagen and Rivian, the two car manufacturers are exploring further areas of partnership, several insiders from both companies told us. According to them, both a hardware cooperation and joint production are being discussed: 🚘 One scenario for an expanded #partnership involves Rivian's new #R2 SUV being produced at the VW plant currently under construction in South Carolina. SUVs and pick-ups from VW's new US EV brand Scout are to roll off the production line at this site from 2026. The R2 is due to be launched around the same time. The ideas are at an early stage and could be put aside again, the insiders said. How well the partnership between Rivian and VW gets off the ground in the critical #software area is likely to be of key importance. 🚦 A VW spokesperson declined to comment on speculation about an extended partnership. A Rivian spokesperson said: "There are currently no cooperation plans for the hardware sector." Last week, the German OEM and the US start-up announced the establishment of a new joint #venture in the software sector. Volkswagen is investing up to five billion dollars. The goal: use the start-up's expertise to develop an operating system for the next generation of EVs that is better than what CARIAD has to offer. ⚡ Further cooperation is likely to involve VW's new subsidiary Scout Motors Inc. VW is investing five billion dollars here: in the construction of the new plant and in the development of an independent platform. According to an insider, #OliverBlume told RJ Scaringe that VW does not know how to proceed with Scout. Its development would cost billions, despite the changed market environment. Accordingly, even a discontinuation of the Scout project had been discussed. 💡 In an interview with me, Scout CEO Scott Keogh contradicts this statement: "Oliver Blume is 100 percent behind our vision." Scout is bringing "an iconic brand back to life" with a "phenomenal product". The end of Scout has not been discussed, on the contrary: "The Group has made the decision to grow in #NorthAmerica, the largest economy in the world. Beissbarth’s Q.Lign system has received full VAG (Volkswagenwerk Aktiengesellschaft, that is Volkswagen Group or VWG) approval status, which means it is accredited for all VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Cupra, Porsche, Lamborghini and  Bentley vehicles. The approval comes after “extensive and exhaustive testing” by VAG and means “dealers can be assured that they will have the benefit of a wheel alignment system that is both accurate and repeatable, along with having the very latest wheel alignment data and software as approved by the manufacturer from April 2024.” All VWG dealers can now download the latest VWG alignment data via a simple and cost-effective process using a key card purchased from VWUK to access the Beissbarth Software Centre. Beissbarth bills the Q.Lign as “the World’s First Web-based wheel aligner”. It can stream to directly display the software on any TV, PC, laptop or smartphone, integrating workshop processes and systems. With the inclusion of the magnetic clamps for “fast-clamping accuracy”, the Q.Lign is able to display full alignment data from the vehicle instantly, together with an overview of the wheelbase, off-sets and wheel centre dimensions. As modern vehicles have some form of forward facing ADAS equipment installed, the Q.Lign is complemented by the Q.DAS ADAS calibration rig and the VAS6430 rig which integrates with the Q.Lign enabling the Q.Lign/ADAS rig combination to meet the accuracy requirements of all OEMs. 40 years ago Beissbarth’s MAC4 was amongst the first to gain vehicle approval when BMW approved this unit for their worldwide network. This was followed by the VAG1813 in the early 90s, with VWG wanting accurate wheel alignment equipment for their VW and Audi passenger cars being fitted with more complex suspension than in previous models. And these vehicles would soon have some basic ADAS devices fitted to them that also required calibrating. "E.ON and MAN Truck & Bus Deutschland GmbH are jointly taking the expansion of the charging infrastructure for commercial vehicles in Germany and Europe a decisive step forward. As part of their new cooperation, the energy company and the commercial vehicle manufacturer will set up around 170 locations with around 400 charging points for the public charging of electric trucks across Europe. E.ON and MAN are investing in the new charging locations, which are being built along the existing MAN service network and at which commercial vehicles from other manufacturers can also charge publicly. Around 125 locations are planned in Germany alone. This will create the largest nationwide public charging network for heavy commercial vehicles in the country to date. “The future of mobility is autonomous." Project coordinator Jörg Reichardt, Continental gave an insightful presentation on the nxtAIM project and addressed important aspects in the discussion of #AutomatedDriving. "However, for the vision of autonomous #mobility in the future to become a reality, in addition to technical excellence, another condition must be met: If the person behind the wheel is to truly relinquish their responsibility, that responsibility must be assumed elsewhere. Given enough computing power, #generativeAI methods can be relatively easily scaled and trained on massive datasets without specific functional relevance. They can be used in the areas of perception, #SensorData generation, behavior prediction of road users, and route planning. In function development, the industry is no longer limited by the amount of real-world driving #data collected; instead, nearly unlimited new traffic and driving data can be generated synthetically. This opens up entirely new possibilities for training, testing, and validating driving functions, especially in rare and critical traffic situations, and allows for a gradual expansion of the previously limited Operational Design Domain (ODD)."
