Our partner Asklepios Hospitals has just published its 2023 Research Report, extensively mentioning IDERHA. The departments of Prof. Niels Reinmuth from the Asklepios Lung Clinic Munich-Gauting, as well as PD Dr. Günther Wiest and Dr. Claas Wesseler from the Pulmonary Department of AK Harburg, are participating together with ASKLEPIOS proresearch in IDERHA to build one of the first pan-European health data spaces. 174 years ago in the world of reliability (15 MAY 1850) Ignaz Semmelweiss urged his fellow physicians to save patient lives with 3 words - wash your hands. The story of Semmelweiss and hand hygiene is well known. Physicians in his OB service in Vienna had a mother - baby mortality 10 to 20 times higher than midwives delivering moms at the same hospital. The physicians would finish an autopsy of one patient and then attend the delivery of another. Deadly bacteria were transmitted in the process. Without knowing why (germ theory would come later), Semmelweiss required his physicians to wash hands. Mortality improved. Today, hand hygiene is a cornerstone of infection prevention. We must still improve our reliability in doing hand hygiene - but the practice is universally accepted. That acceptance was not always the case. Semmelweiss started hand washing in 1847, three years before he shared with other physician groups. Semmelweiss did not publish for another 13 years. Then tens of years to become an accepted practice and hundreds of years to become a high reliability practice. This time for spread is too slow for a reliability revolution. Everett Rogers published Diffusion of Innovation in 1962. New ideas progress from innovators to early adopters to early majority to late majority to laggards. Rogers identified success factors important to us as reliability leaders today: 1. build social capital 2. explain the why (especially to the science-minded) 3. show results in early applications 4. use that social capital to change thinking (one conversation at a time) Culture changes one conversation at a time. Use safety moments and time on the floor for these conversations. Ironically, if you are speaking of hand washing, you would be using a 62-year-old spread strategy for a 174-year-old practice. #safety #highreliability #hro #lifeskills #safetyleadership

47 years ago today, Andreas Grüntzig performed the very first coronary angioplasty. The procedure transformed a 38-year-old from "seriously ill to a healthy man within minutes". The discipline of cardiology would never be the same, either: transformed from "an investigational, drug-oriented discipline to a hybrid between internal medicine and surgery" [1]. It all began with an idea, made possible by a team. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally [2]. Today, the International Day for Interventional #Cardiology, we remember the progress made, raise awareness of cardiovascular diseases and procedures, and look forward to a future with more innovation, teamwork, and transformations. In our new study published by "Surgical Endoscopy" using IQVIA data from 36 German hospitals, we analyzed 4,525 colorectal #cancer (CRC) cases. 2,767 underwent open #surgery and 1,758 underwent minimally invasive surgery. Open surgery was asignificantly associated with 4 times higher #mortality risk, 2 times higher risk of acute post-hemorrhagic #anemia and respiratory failure, and 4 times higher risk of intraoperative and postprocedural #complications. These findings underscore the need for increased adoption of minimally invasive techniques and highlight the potential benefits of shifting toward minimally invasive methods to enhance the overall quality of CRC care. Just published... Transatlantic and national analysis of various large national registries show underutilisation of pancreatic robotic surgery in Germany. Implementation of robotic surgery in pancreatic surgery lags behind and delivers worse results in international comparison in Germany, as does open pancreatic surgery. This analysis shows a need for national training and implementation programs of robotic pancreatic surgery and further concentration of care of pancreatic cancer in Germany.
