How to make effective (business) decisions? It's known that different perspectives can contribute to #decisionmaking. The tricky part is, however, creating the process to incorporate these perspectives. Here, Evoniks Bias Buster format provides a good platform - many thanks for the opportunity to bring up a #CircularEconomy topic! My learnings: ☆ Already phrasing a good #question requires utmost attention as this part sets the scene for the outcome. ☆ Everyone has their own #frameworks to process and create information - being aware of the strengths, limits and applicability of such frameworks is crucial to understand what we know and what we don't know. ☆ Structuring the #communication during exchange of perspectives in a way, which allows everyone to bring in their thoughts independently of who's present or what has been said, helps to discover new ideas.

Attending the EPCA Conference in Berlin this week with a focus on sustainability and the environment, reinforced how corporate leadership today demands more than steering a company towards profitability. It calls for a profound understanding of our role in shaping the very fabric of society. Here's what I've learned: 1/ We must guide young leaders to look beyond just quarterly reports and immediate gains. The real challenge? Teaching them to consider long-term, multi-stakeholder impacts. Every decision we make ripples through time, affecting not just our bottom line, but our communities, environment, and future generations. 2/ The line between business and social impact is blurring—and that's challenging but also exciting. Our responsibility is to show emerging leaders how to leverage their business acumen for responsible growth and social good. 3/ There are no easy answers when balancing the need for short term profitability with long term sustainability. Knee jerk actions around sustainability will do more damage than good. It's critical to find bold but pragmatic and science based solutions to advance. 4/ As corporate leaders, we're uniquely positioned to influence more than just our sectors. We have the platform, resources, and networks to address society's most pressing challenges. This isn't just an opportunity—it's a responsibility. Last week's tributes to Ratan Tata and the man he was --- should make us question what kind of legacy we choose to co-create. Will we be remembered solely for our business achievements, or for how we used our influence to shape a better world? #business #legacy #service

Breaking through Unconscious Bias - Another enlightening Bias Buster session is in the books! The most dangerous bias is the belief that we are not biased ourselves. Therefore we Evonik take bolder actions! ✊ 🚀 We're not just addressing or reflecting the topic, we're actively reveal our biases by bringing together our future leaders and our top management. I’m happy to announce some great #TeamBayer News: We just got our first-ever Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) methodology certificate. 👏 At Bayer, we are committed to doing our part. Our recently unveiled Climate Transition and Transformation Plan is a key step in this journey: We want to be climate-neutral at our own sites by 2030. By 2050, we aim to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90% to become Net Zero. This applies to all emissions that occur within our value chain. An important component of this effort is understanding the carbon footprint of our individual products. The PCF measurement is vital for identifying opportunities to reduce CO2 emissions. By calculating the carbon footprints, we can pinpoint key drivers of emissions—such as packaging, raw materials, and energy consumption. Also, we know where there's room for improvement. This insight enables us to focus on specific purchases and processes for improvement. I believe that carbon emissions will increasingly influence purchasing decisions. Congratulations to my colleagues Sebastian Fischer, PhD, Dennis Olyai, Larissa Merkl, Manuel Willems, Thorsten Richardt, Joerg Cramer and team as well as numerous colleagues all across the company!

The annual report of Bayer’s Sustainability Council has been published today. It summarizes the discussions the Council had with Bayer’s Board of Management and other executive leaders during the last year. In a nutshell, we are recommended to continue to focus on strengthening our collaborative partnerships with all stakeholders, i.e. NGOs, governmental bodies, financial institutions, suppliers, customers and competitors in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 17 “Partnership for the goals”. Looking ahead, there is still room to grow. Perhaps one of the most valuable recommendations is to increase our focus on regenerative agriculture, including environmental impact reduction, as regenerative agriculture is still hindered by many hurdles and a lack of mechanization. Providing women in LMICs with modern contraception also needs to stay on top of our priority list. Furthermore, we are encouraged to further manifest ourselves as leaders and frontrunners on human rights and ensure the best standards in our entire supply chain. To achieve all these goals, we must continue to provide all stakeholders with robust scientific data to ensure a transparent dialog. All in all, the recommendations received from the Sustainability Council are indispensable to ensuring that we are following a scientifically-informed strategy. For Bayer, the work of the external Sustainability Council is extremely important in order to continually question our actions and the progress in the implementation of the sustainability strategy in a critical-constructive manner. I am very grateful for the time the Council dedicated to us and would like to thank the members of the Sustainability Council for their work. A Wake-Up Call for Germany’s Economic Landscape BASF's decision to reduce its presence in Germany is symptomatic for the overall industry landscape and I find it deeply concerning. High energy costs, burdensome regulations, and a lack of political support for the industry are the primary factors driving their decision. This situation highlights the broader challenges facing Germany as a competitive business location. We need to urgently address these issues to ensure that Germany remains an attractive hub for industrial activity and Innovation.

Bayer is investing in the sustainable transformation of agriculture on the African continent! The survival of mankind has always depended on what grows faster – the population or agricultural productivity. In most parts of the world, agricultural productivity has increased more strongly over the past 100 years. This is one of the main reasons why we can feed 8 billion people today. On the African continent, however, population growth is far outstripping agricultural productivity. This is not sustainable! For African agriculture to be more productive and to be able to cope with climate change, it needs better access to knowledge, technology, but also investment. That’s why development policy and business need to work together closely – and I’m extremely proud that we at Bayer do our part. Yesterday, I had the great pleasure of participating in a USAID event with distinguished experts like Samantha Power and David M. Beasley. We discussed what is needed to support the transformation of agriculture on the African continent. A shift in sustainability awareness! 🌍 Today, I spoke to 30 BASF trainees from Ludwigshafen at our Frankenthal factory about sustainability and KSB‘s efforts. I started by asking, “Who acknowledges human-made climate change?” To my surprise, every hand went up. This moment filled me with both inspiration and hope. It’s clear that the next generation is not only well-informed, but also eager to take action. The conversation has shifted—it's no longer just about acknowledging the problem, but about finding solutions together. Seeing future leaders already committed to driving transformation was incredibly motivating. What stood out even more is the sense of collaboration emerging. It's clear that working closely with our value chain partners will be key to making a real impact. How will fuel prices at the pump evolve with the gradual blending of carbon neutral e-fuels into fossil fuels? Our latest study commissioned by #UNITI Bundesverband Energie Mittelstand e.V., which I presented yesterday in Berlin, provides some insights on this question. Key findings: During the initial phase of market introduction, a moderate share of e-fuels in fuel blends will result in minimal price changes at the pump. By 2045, even with a greater share of e-fuels, prices of the fuel blend are expected to stay within a moderate range, due to significant cost reductions in e-fuels production. And: Fuel prices may decrease further beyond 2045 as production costs continue to fall. The key requirement to support this moderate price development is essential to implement differentiated energy taxes for green fuels, e.g. based on greenhouse gas intensity, as proposed by the EU Commission. In a globalizing world, the need for European manufacturers to have production capabilities in other continents is an indisputable need. Nevertheless, I urgently wish all European countries, including Germany, to rethink their vision in order to remain competitive in the world of the future. Governments should also remember the strategic importance of local production and supply in the same globalizing world, starting from energy production, and find ways to create more added value by working smarter in all energy-intensive industries such as chemicals as well as in healthcare, renewables and digital.

To make chemical processes more efficient and thus greener, the right catalyst has to be selected in combination with the right reactor type. For pharmaceutical production in particular, the move from traditional powder-based to shaped catalysts offers numerous advantages. 💡 Precious metal-based carbon microsphere catalysts combine the advantages of powder (very high BET surface areas) with the positive properties of a stable bulk material (a high crushing strength). 🔬 Platinum- and palladium-loaded microsphere catalysts exhibit the following properties: ➡️ Up to 2.5 wt% precious metal loading (Pt or Pd) ➡️ PM surface area 0.4 – 3 m²/g ➡️ Catalyst pH between 4 - 6 They have the potential to bridge the gap between batch and continuous production processes in the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries. In our latest 2024 ESG Update, we shared the significant strides we have made in sustainability with our investors.
