The German Federal Ministry of Defence | Bundesministerium der Verteidigung has submitted a request for 652 million euros ($697.18 million) to the parliament's budget committee to finance a hypersonic weapons development project with Norway. In mid-May, Norway's defence group KONGSBERG announced a partnership with Germany's Diehl Aviation and MBDA to develop a super-sonic missile known as 3SM Tyrfing. The HYPERMissile (TM) can reach Mach 25 and comes in 3 models. Further, HYPERMissile (TM) can be launched from air, land or sea and can be navigated using AI thereby optimizing precision targeting while delivering maximum payload. Space Safety Industry Days at ESOC/ESA in Darmstadt, 28.11.2024. It felt like a family meeting, a quickly growing family... In my opinion, within ESA's Space Safety Program (#S2P) are one of the most useful/helpful missions - for mindkind (warning and protection from asteroids, e.g. #HERA, #RAMSES) - for the resilience of its economy and defence capabilities (non-dependent warning from hazardous sun outbursts which could damage or infrastructure in Earth and in space, e.g. #VIGIL) - all around #SpaceDebris (mitigation, removal, space traffic management, up to in-orbit measurement of small debris particles <1mm, e.g. via #SAILOR) and others within the #COSMIC program, - including managing its measures complying -> to the ESA regulation "maximum 5 years deorbit time" and -> to the - meanwhile international - #ZeroDebrisCharter. Not respecting the space debris issue means soon "GAME OVER" for us space industry and for mankind by no more daily use of space infrastructure. For the next CMin2025 a total budget of - in my view - 1 billion Euro for 3 years (should be 5-7% of total) would be well invested money...for European sovereignty and global mankind. Thank you very much, dear ESA Space Safety Office within the ESA Operations, Engineering & Space Safety Directorate for this very efficient event.

RENK Group AG, a leading supplier of military and civilian propulsion solutions has signed a strategic partnership agreement with the global defense and security company QinetiQ. The agreement will see the two companies jointly develop future mobility concepts for military land platforms in the weight class of 5 to 60 tons. The partnership will focus on advanced hybridization concepts and uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs). As part of the agreement both partners will leverage technological core competencies and strengths: RENK will contribute its expertise in the area of gear technologies and complete system solutions, including electric drives and power electronics. QinetiQ will contribute its expertise in advanced autonomy and manoeuvrability. At Assaia – The ApronAI we have been innovating since day 1 and we are not about to stop. I am particularly excited that we are working with excellent partners like Munich Airport to find new ways to reduce carbon emissions within the industry. Yes, there are big game-changers in the pipeline like electric or hydrogen flight. However, these are still years away from official introduction. The question is what can we already do today? 🚀 German Space Agency Delays ReFEx Launch to 2026 The German Space Agency (DLR) has announced another delay in the launch schedule of its Reusable Flight Experiment (ReFEx) demonstrator, with a new projected date set for late 2026. Originally envisioned to launch in 2024, the 2.7-meter-long ReFEx project is designed to test a reusable rocket’s winged first-stage return capability, making it a critical step for Germany in advancing reusable spaceflight technology. The development of ReFEx started in 2017 with the objective of testing whether a winged rocket stage could re-enter the atmosphere and execute a controlled, belly-style landing. With a 1.1-meter wingspan and a weight of approximately 450 kilograms, the demonstrator’s compact yet sophisticated design aims to validate technical approaches in reusable launch vehicle development, which could have significant implications for the future of sustainable space exploration. Despite promising progress, including the assembly and structural testing milestones achieved by the DLR’s Institute of Structures and Design, ReFEx has encountered several schedule setbacks. Initially pushed from 2024 to 2025, Southern Launch, which operates the Koonibba Test Range in Australia, further adjusted the timeline this May. Now, with the integration and testing phase of the primary structure complete, DLR has officially shifted the launch window to the end of 2026, a timeline confirmed by updates on the ReFEx project page. The mission plan involves launching ReFEx atop a Brazilian VSB-30 sounding rocket, with deployment at around 130 kilometers altitude. The demonstrator will then test its reusability features by re-entering the atmosphere and executing a guided landing that simulates the return trajectory of a reusable, winged rocket stage. If successful, the mission could prove foundational for Europe’s reusability initiatives, adding to global momentum towards cost-effective, sustainable space launch solutions. The consistent delays highlight the engineering complexities involved in reusable launch technologies. One of HENSOLDT's core competencies is the active and passive detection of threats and the protection of platforms and their users. At the ILA Berlin - Pioneering Aerospace, HENSOLDT will present its wide range of sensor solutions for reconnaissance, surveillance and monitoring as well as sensors to improve security and operational effectiveness. TRML-4D is the latest member of the HENSOLDT family of ground-based C-band (NATO G-band) air defence radars. HENSOLDT is demonstrating a state-of-the-art system that is currently being used for air defence in Ukraine. TRML-4D utilises the latest AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar technology with multiple digitally shaped beams. It is designed for short- and long-range surface-to-air detection and weapon designation. It is capable of detecting, tracking and classifying different types of air targets, with a focus on small, fast and low-flying cruise missiles and aircraft, as well as helicopters and drones. It ensures the rapid detection and tracking of around 1,500 targets within a radius of up to 250 kilometres and at an altitude of up to 30 kilometres. To close the existing capability gaps in mobile defence against drones at short range, Rheinmetall and MBDA Deutschland signed a corresponding Letter of Intent (LOI) at ILA Berlin - Pioneering Aerospace. The companies intend to integrate MBDA's Small Anti Drone Missile (SADM) into the Skyranger 30 and other Rheinmetall military vehicles. Utilising Enforcer technologies, this new guided missile offers an effective solution against small and medium-sized drones providing a high hit probability at long stand-off distances. For its part, the 30mm cannon on the Skyranger 30 offers highly efficient, mobile defence against airborne threats by combining firepower, intelligent sensor technology and high mobility at shorter ranges. This means that the two weapons complement each other perfectly. “As the prime contractor for the Skyranger 30 system in Germany, the Small Anti-Drone Missile is an ideal and logical addition to the capabilities of Rheinmetall’s systems and vehicles. We are working in advance and are already creating the conditions for the industrial set-up in order to quickly implement the customer’s decisions,” said Timo Haas, Chief Digital Officer, Rheinmetall. DCUBED: Advancing Space Technology from Release Mechanisms to In-Space Manufacturing   German New Space company DCUBED has recently completed a Series-A funding round, raising 4.4 million euros ($4.8 million). Due to strong investor demand, the round was oversubscribed by 26%. What was the secret of this New Space start-up to get so much investor interest?   DCUBED has an initial product range successfully used by for a number of New Space start-ups on their space missions. The secret was finding a market gap and providing an essential and in-space working product that was not the core business of many New Space start-ups. The initial DCUBED product line centered on space release actuators, which play a crucial role in payload deployment for various space missions. These devices are designed to ensure accurate deployment of satellites, scientific instruments, and other equipment in the space environment. DCUBED's actuators are engineered to address different deployment needs.   With the new funds, DCubed plans to open an office in Westminster, Colorado, to serve as a sales and distribution hub. This move is strategically important as the U.S. represents over half of the company's current client base.   While expanding its market presence, DCUBED is also pushing for the advancement of its Technology Readiness Level (TRL) for new technologies. The recent funding round not only supports geographical expansion but also enables the company to advance its development efforts. A key focus of this innovation drive is DCUBED's  In-Space Manufacturing (ISM) of solar array structures.   The work on solar arrays was already in progressing with the ESA BSGN | Business in Space Growth Network In-orbit Manufacturing Accelerator (IMA), led by the Satellite Applications Catapult. Now DCUBED is advancing its TRL with a planned launch in February 2025, for the in orbit demonstration of ISM. The plan is to roll out a solar array consisting of an ultrathin solar blanket in orbit, while the back structure is 3D printed onto the solar array membrane directly during roll out in space. The DCUBED ISM solar array system will be integrated directly into the host spacecraft, reducing mass and weight. At ILA Berlin - Pioneering Aerospace with Lucas Hässelbarth this week. very interesting review of the state of the industry in both aerospace and defense. it became clear yesterday that the industry struggles with a peak of high demand that is difficult to satisfy along with resources issues. almost all booths in defense and aerospace had a #weAreHiring corner giving access to direct talks about carrier in the industry. while the digital transformation is going full speed l, we could find out that critical qualified person is very hard to fine. There some companies are going very aggressively pursuing in house training and education, other are strongly reliant on external “people” suppliers. Another recurring theme , as Pression on tier one supplier , is increased efficiency in production, even if the most parts are produced with lot of one piece. In the space area, more education and political discussions ongoing. There we saw Alexander Gerst participating to an interesting discussion @space for earth and international collaboration. The ILA trade show is definitely worth visiting for all industry enthusiasts

Bundeswehr (German Federal Armed Forces) has awarded Airbus the SATCOMBw 3 prime contract for the next generation secure military satellite system which includes geostationary satellites as well as ground segment, launch and operation for 15 years. The spacecraft are due to be deployed before the end of the decade and the contract value amounts to EUR 2.1 billion. Michael Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space, said: “After the success of the SATCOMBw Stage 2 programme, which we have been delivering since 2009, this latest contract reinforces our strategic partnership with the Bundeswehr, providing them with a greatly enhanced secure milsatcom capability that is future proofed into the 2040s. At a time when Western democracies are challenged and where the European institutional space ecosystem is struggling, we are excited and grateful to develop and build this leading-edge system.
