Salary Guide 2024 - Venture Capital DACH The last two years were crisis years for many start-ups. The volume of financing fell by almost two thirds. The reasons for this are persistently high interest rates and high inflation, coupled with a recession and a difficult geopolitical situation. Added to this is the further withdrawal of foreign investors from financing German start-ups, particularly from the USA. Nevertheless, experts are optimistic about the current year, not least because of the enormous potential in the artificial intelligence and clean tech sectors. This optimistic outlook for 2024 is also reflected in the salaries of VC company employees. These have remained relatively stable and, in some cases, have seen a positive upward trend. #investmentbanking

Tanja Kewes and Handelsblatt reporting today on our 2024 analysis of German DAX Supervisory Boards. The 14th edition of this study by Russell Reynolds Associates shows that while in its first year female representation was at 7% now 40% have been achieved. It goes without saying that an ideal board composition needs to take many other aspects into account, but all considered, DAX Supervisory Boards improved over the years - still leaving some potential to be unlocked.

The Handelsblatt Research Institute has once again identified Germany's top personnel consultants, and MU is keeping its place as one of the top 40 recruitment consultancies. In collaboration with The IQ Company, The Handelsblatt Research Institute has identified the 40 leading HR consulting companies of 2024. They used the reviews of over 20,500 employees from 2,800 companies as well as the opinions of around 48,000 managers and human resources managers. Whilst doing the review, Handelsblatt also took the opportunity to do a study to look at the biggest challenges that recruiters currently face. The need for AI experts is reflected in the study, where AI and robotics have significantly risen in importance among industry topics. The study also identifies digitalisation and sustainability as top priorities for HR consultants in Germany, reflecting the country's need for managers capable of driving structural change. Interesting new episode of the Kassenzone podcast with Peter Pernot-Day from SHEIN, who talks about the history as well as current developments and the general business model. Three interesting tidbits: SHEIN has been active in Germany since 2015. As a company, it has also been profitable since that year - despite the low prices. SHEIN's goal is to create "High Engagement Experiences": Unlike purely search-driven retail, customers should open the app regularly, even if they don't want to buy anything specific. SHEIN is primarily an e-commerce company, but they explicitly use pop-up stores to enable interaction in the physical world - Pernot-Day calls this "ephemeral retail". ❓𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸? 🤔 (Part 1 of 2) I pursued this question as part of my Impact MBA studies at Tomorrow University of Applied Sciences and had the honour of interviewing Dr. Lars Fink, PhD in economics, currently co-founder and managing director of werdetnachbarn.de, previously successful founder of get in GmbH, GreenPocket GmbH, next level and Ligatus (Outbrain). As the entrepreneurial track record is obvious, I wanted to talk less about it and more about the experiences and mindset that led to this path. We talked about childhood, family, studies, entrepreneurial thinking, learning from within the team and the economic added value of digital platforms. My highlights from our conversation: ❔ 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝟱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘂𝗽 𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿. 𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲? "No. That would be like having several children and having to name your favourite! Every startup is unique and I made a conscious decision for each one!" ❔ 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿?  "Entrepreneurship is in my blood. I was already an entrepreneur as a young boy when I bought up all the Donald Duck comic books at a street flea market, for example, so that I could then set the prices all by myself as a monopolist."😅 [Note from me: in addition to economic cleverness, his later entrepreneurial commitment has a significant broader understanding of impact. 😉] ❔ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽?  "The special thing about entrepreneurship is the high degree of autonomy. You can decide for yourself who you work with and what you work on. But in my experience, autonomy doesn't mean working less or always being particularly flexible. It means being particularly connected to your work, both in terms of time and emotionally. This can be both a great feeling of happiness and sometimes a burden. It's important to be open about this time-consuming and stressful journey with your family – and also to make enough room for their wishes and needs. And it's best not to start a business alone, but with someone with whom you can share your ideas, enthusiasm and worries to have a mutually supportive relationship which can carry you through the difficult phases." ❔  𝗜𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 "𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻" 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁? "You need a certain amount of self-confidence and a strong sense of self-efficacy. This is not genetic, but depends heavily on your environment (family, friends, school, studies, etc.). Last week, WEPA Ventures partnered with WEPA Stiftung and WHU Institut für Familienunternehmen und Mittelstand for a unique gathering. We invited a selected group of family entrepreneurs, family officers, founders, VCs, and business angels to our office in Düsseldorf to discuss startup investments by family businesses and family offices. With every participant bringing valuable practical experience, the atmosphere was highly engaging and trustful. Alongside keynotes and panel discussions, we had lively debates that covered a wide range of topics. Here are my three key takeaways: 💡 Multiple Approaches to Investing: Most participants shared more than one approach to startup investments that is currently actively pursued by their organization. While there is certainly a bias due to the preselection of attendees, this signals a growing maturity of VC investments by family businesses and family offices in Germany. Notably, around 50% of participants manage more than 10 investments in their current role, which underlines this perspective. 💡Direct Involvement of Entrepreneurial Families: The discussions reaffirmed the critical role of direct family involvement. Ideally, entrepreneurial families are crafting investment setups that are attractive to both founders and VC co-investors, while maintaining the trust of their family peers or core organizations. Combining execution speed with the value brought by industrial networks or core business capabilities is key to being a valued investor in the early-stage VC ecosystem. 💡Feedback on Keynote about my PhD Research: The initial findings from my PhD research received positive feedback from other practitioners. You might say, "Didn’t you interview them in the first place?" True, but stepping away from interviewer role allowed me to share what I had derived from the research, and it was rewarding to hear that the abstraction and models resonated well. I follow a small number of thought leaders from Scott Gallaway to Charles Eisenstein, Sadghuru and a few more, and only one in my native German language: Dr. Christoph Quarch is the leading philosopher in Europe to bring Plato's thoughts back to our modern world - and make them work. Quarch has created a new thinking model of aliveness and quality of life that goes beyond the purely quantitative promise of liberty of the current Cartesian operating system of our societies and economic systems. He brilliantly brings into the open why a 400-year-old thinking model is not working any longer and badly needs an overhaul, just like we would not have our iPhone 15 work with the OS of the iPhone 1 and wonder why the apps don't work and the phone keeps on crashing. Why do we believe for a second that our society's OS from the 17th century works in the 21 century? His brilliant presentations, speeches and books are mostly in German, until now - but this will change, soon. #quarch, #plato, #leadership, #aliveness, #philosophy, #mythos, #logos

What do a motivation letter and borscht have in common? The word 'borscht' is familiar to many as a delicious soup with deep roots in Eastern Europe. But how do these two concepts connect? That's exactly what we explored during our webinar at Power Hub Zug last Monday. Power Hub Zug is dedicated to supporting Ukrainians, who have been displaced by the war, in their search for jobs in Switzerland. I'm gladly contributing my expertise in recruitment marketing to this important cause. Just like every home cook has their own way of preparing borscht, there are essential ingredients that must be included! Whether it’s thick or more broth-like, spicy or mild, or with varying degrees of sautéing for certain ingredients—the details matter less than whether your loved ones ask for seconds and linger at the table. Ukrainians, by the twists of history now in Switzerland, are often highly skilled professionals with excellent education, qualifications, and skills. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the Swiss employers who have recognized this and hired these talented individuals—kudos to you, colleagues! One common challenge for Ukrainians is the tendency to be modest about their achievements. However, effectively highlighting your skills and experiences is crucial for securing a job. During our webinar, we discussed how to tailor your motivation letter to specific job descriptions, structure your skills and qualifications effectively, and showcase your past accomplishments.
