Discussions - and debates – about avoided emissions have been multiplying.   Roland Berger recently conducted a study to better grasp which companies are exploring this concept, its opportunities, and challenges. Key insights are the following: ◉ These companies are mature in terms of climate action. That is revealed in the latest CDP and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Supply Chain Report 2024.  Here's what our experts recommend to tackle the challenge:  ⦿ 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 should nominate at least one climate-competent member; bindingly articulate their climate impact considerations; set up a Board Climate Committee; upskill on climate risks; mandate financial quantification of upstream Scope 3 risks; and report to the Audit and Risk Committee.  ⦿ 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 should measure and report Scope 3 emissions annually; set science-based targets to reduce those emissions; transparently assess upstream risks and engage with suppliers to manage Scope 3 emissions; and pilot and embed internal carbon price in decision-making processes. ⦿ 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 should price in risk to ensure fair market valuations and drive corporates to adopt comprehensive climate disclosures in the absence of regulations. At the recent Handelsblatt conference on industrial decarbonization, German industry leaders sent a strong message: we urgently need a bold, new industrial policy to drive the green transition. Despite economic challenges, companies are staying the course on their climate goals, but they’re frustrated by the sluggish pace of government support. Learning from New CEOs Last week Rich Lesser, Matthias Tauber and I hosted our annual New CEO Forum in Paris with 13 new enterprise CEOs who lead companies in a broad range sectors across financial services, industrial goods, healthcare, energy and more, headquartered in a diverse set of European markets. We discussed how CEOs today can create resilient organizations that demonstrate agility in addressing the increasing short-term pressures on their businesses while also investing deliberately to drive sustained growth and innovation. We reflected how leaders can transfer the capabilities that their teams honed in crises – when people pull together with a shared sense of purpose, accountability and the imperative of effective decision making – into a ‘steady state’ of running the business that is markedly more volatile than it used to be. And Bruce Cleaver, former CEO of de Beers, shared his perspective on CEOs needing to turn a 'burning platform' (that is intuitively understood in any crisis) into a 'burning ambition' for ‘peacetime operations’. What truly impressed me was the pervasive sense of humility of the CEOs present: all of them emphasized how much they rise and fall with the shared ambition, energy and support of their team We left energized and hopeful for the future, knowing these leaders are at the forefront of world changing businesses.
