Artificial intelligence in procurement – friend or foe? 🦸🏻‍♀️ Recently, I was a guest on Google's Female Auto Connect podcast, where I talked a lot about artificial intelligence with Sandy Grzeskowiak and Dr. Dorothee N.. My three main thoughts on this are: 🤩 A positive mindset: I'm very pleased how positively my entire procurement team has reacted to the possibilities AI can offer to us. We’ve been dealing with it long before the rise of ChatGPT, though this has brought it to the front of most people's minds. At Porsche AG, we see AI as a means to free us from monotonous activities, make procurement more efficient and allow us to use our time more wisely. ⚒️ Holistic use: Even before the Supply Chain Transparency Act, we wanted to know more about our partners, where they produce, and under what conditions. And especially when natural events like floods happen or new laws are introduced that result for example in substance bans, we need to know whether we’re affected. We use AI to gain more transparency here. The same applies to analyzing component costs, instead of comparing huge Excel tables. Now we can enter the cost breakdown into a tool that indicates where we can become more cost-efficient. 🔢 Data quality and data availability are key: Especially when it comes to vehicle safety functions, it’s important to know that sufficient high-quality data is available. To achieve this, we also need to think about our employees’ expertise. We can only maintain our quality standards if they are sufficiently trained in the use of AI. I just had the unique opportunity to participate in the Sounding Board - a special workshop format having the following core as idea: With the "European Policy Industrial Compass" (#EPIC), H/Advisors Deekeling Arndt and PANTARHEI Corporate Advisors aim to develop guidelines that the new Commission and the new Parliament can use to measure their announced industrial policy actions and be guided by concrete proposals. 🇪🇺 Quite important for innovation driven tech players like us from QUANTRON fighting for decarbonization of transportation but also for all the other participants such as MAN Truck & Bus SE, BMW Group, Huawei, BSH Home Appliances Group, ADAC, Lufthansa Group and many others. We had an intense and exciting discussion in an interesting setting, trying to develop ideas that will be incorporated into the EPIC planned for September. Background: The elections for the #European #Parliament have also ushered in the mandate of the new EU Commission. But how should the new EU Commission's mandate be shaped from an economic perspective? What specific measures are needed to make #competitiveness and #investmentsecurity future-proof again? Christian Böllhoff from Prognos AG started us off with five key tasks for Europe: #investments, #innovation, #labor market, #productivity, and #bureaucracy were the focus. I addressed concrete points such as establishing an #unbuerocratic investment fund to support #innovation and positive disruption from EU side to increase #CO2 improvements, #digitization and therefore benefit for all European #citizens. It was a lot of fun, and I sincerely thank everyone involved, especially Hans-Peter (HP) Kleebinder and Markus Kirchschlager for the invitation and Gilbert Rukschcio for leading through the program with all participants, including: Stefan Gerwens, Maik Böres, Ellen Carey Ulrike Mühlberg, Stephan Sellmaier, Christoph Schuler, Jacqueline Casini, Markus Binding, Miriam Bienert-Kukiolka Hans-Joachim Bues, Dr. Andreas Kießling Markus Gruber, Ingobert Veith.

MOBILITY OF THE FUTURE – USING INSTEAD OF OWNING WITH #EDAG #CITYBOT. According to the World Economic Forum, two thirds of all people will be living in cities in 2050. In megacities with 10 million inhabitants or more. Across the globe, there are already 36 megacities, including New York, Moscow and London. This rapid growth could result in the essential infrastructure being unable to keep up, threatening cities with collapse, as local public transport, electricity, water supplies and waste collection become overburdened. We can all call to mind images of completely overcrowded subways or interminable traffic jams, with endless streams of vehicles every day trying to make their way along smog-filled, congested roads. With the help of scenario technology, #EDAG has been looking into the famous crystal ball for you, and, on the basis of future-oriented influence parameters, forecasting how changes in society, politics or sociology, for instance, but also in technology might change the future, and predicting what developments can be expected in the next 5/10/15 years. Is the idea of all-encompassing #BusinessTransformation still relevant? Or should organizations increasingly embrace continuous adaptation and agility as guiding principles for success? 🚀 Those questions are explored in this article – and I find myself saying a huge YES to that latter question. ❓Why? Because progress in many industries (#Automotive, for sure) is moving so fast that #ChangeManagement is the dominant approach that underpins how we deliver value for our customers. 🤔 Perhaps the term ‘transformation’ itself is limiting, implying a one-time overhaul rather than an ongoing process of evolution. I prefer the term suggested: ✅ Regenerative transformation to “harmoniously link the operations and performance of modern business with the broader ecosystems of the people, places, and organizations within which it operates.” ⏳The emphasis shifts to developing a long-term vision where organizations integrate transformation into their DNA, fostering cultures of #Innovation where leaders embrace a whole-of-problem, whole-of-company mindset. I highly recommend you read this (and thank you to Kearney’s Alex Liu and Abby Klanecky for their insights). The issues discussed echo our approach at Henkel. For example, in our 2030+ #Sustainability Ambition Framework, the way we work with customers to build partnerships not execute projects, and much more. 🔋 Exciting Insights from last week's Advanced Battery Power Conference There have been 2 days full of battery innovation and research at Münster with many talks, interesting speeches and high attendance numbers (>1,100). We FEV Europe GmbH had a stand at the booth and were able to hold many interesting discussions thanks to Bernd Hömberg, Prof. Martin Winter and Dirk Uwe Sauer. Here are my key findings: 📌 The most important prerequisites for EU competitiveness in the battery sector are low energy costs and industry funding. Current support from public authorities needs to be improved. In particular, EU research has made some gains in the development of solid-state battery cells, but CN consortia of cell suppliers will follow quickly 📌 Future cell formats will be mainly prismatic and cylindrical parallel, pouch with lower share 📌 Cell chemistry is evolving: LFP is further gaining traction; sodium-ion is becoming more interesting and NMC remains the choice for high energy applications. Interestingly, Solid-State technologies not have been in main focus beside the interest of the Chinese Suppliers forming a consortia… 📌 Main safety issues of last years due to thermal runaway / propagation are under control at system level, energy density vs. fast charging under discussion and cost reduction expected 📌 2nd life applications will be a niche; recycling and reprocessing will play an important role at the end of a battery product's life as customers in all sectors expect best performance 📌 Recycling is complex and not yet standardized, overcapacity is expected in the EU, but with little know-how; we can assume that the cost of battery cells will have to be increased in the future due to recycling, which will affect the attractiveness of the technologies; with the greatest negative impact on LFP, as the recycling of LFP is complex and the recycled raw materials are of low value 📌 the European gigafactories are starting operations, but initially see themselves as (fast) followers of the established suppliers => Battery production remains a challenge 📌 CO2 footprint of Li-Ion batteries is decreasing further to already <30kg CO2 / kWh with using renewable energy     Further I had the honor to lead a session for "battery application" together with Jörg Huslage with four interesting presentations 1️⃣ "Premium Platform Electric (PPE): development of superior charging performance" by Bernhard Rieger 2️⃣ "Battery-in-the cloud for modelbased adaptive control strategies" by Dr. Gerald Rämisch 3️⃣ "Safety Requirements of Stationary Energy Storage Systems for the North American Market" by Juergen Boeck 4️⃣ "Application Driven Differences in Design and Operation of Large-Scale Batteries" by Susanne Lehner 🙏 Thanks to all participants, speakers and organizers for the great event! #Battery #cell #fev

Clearly it means - they are not a mere toy company! It means LEGO exists to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow - the children! Their toys are the tools of inspiration among many other offerings from them. They don’t merely entertain the children. They inspire them to learn and build their ability to build a future! Because, they had forgotten what their “consumers” wanted & of course #financialprudence took a leave of absence. Not paying attention to consumer costed the business dearly. Getting distracted and spending money on unimportant things bled them whatever they earned. The video below explains how LEGO rebuilt itself brick by brick, painfully to regain the lost glory! Laser sharp focus on customer experience, exemplary financial prudence and resilience made this phoenix raise from its ashes! There’s a lesson here for every business: 1. Süddeutsche Zeitung Sustainability Summit: A Reflection on an Inspiring Event 🌍 As announced, here is my next update on the already finished, but very good and still resonating SZ Summit Sustainability of the Süddeutsche Zeitung. I was not only very interested in the discussions about the global economy or possible punitive tariffs, but the transformation from the classic combustion engine industry to the electric age was also a major topic. ⚡🚗 I was particularly impressed by the interview with Peter Weber from BMW Group. Not only because I am still somewhat connected to this company as a former employee, but also because I am closely following how BMW is transforming itself from a pure combustion engine into the electric age. The customer approach is an exciting one, probably the right solution for classic OEMs. Peter Weber explained how he, as head of plant for the Munich plant, is converting the BMW Group's main plant within the #Munich city limits from a combustion engine plant with automobile production to the first all-electric plant. So it doesn't always have to be a new building, as nice as the "greenfield" approach is. It's difficult to see how this can be done during ongoing operations, but it apparently works. Kudos to BMW Group: preserving traditions, going into the future with the right technology. 👏🚙 For me as the managing director of an electric car start-up, there was an exciting panel afterwards, which at first glance has nothing to do with us/myself. The topic: Heating law, municipal planning - chaos? How the heating transition can work actually has nothing to do with e-mobility. But it does! For me the most important contribution to the discussion came from Dr. Wolfgang Gründinger from Enpal. It's exciting to see how a company that emerged from the photovoltaic business is now turning its attention to all aspects of future sustainable energies. From complete PV systems with storage solutions, to its own heat pumps and cooperation with intelligent electricity tariffs. This is where it becomes interesting for us as an electric car manufacturer. Our vehicles can serve very well as intermediate storage units to regulate the energy balance. We need to push ahead with bidirectional charging, it's great that you are taking a visionary approach to these issues Wolfgang Gründinger. We support this with everything we can and have. 🌞🔋🚗 The sentence from Robert Habeck stuck in my mind: "...we – in Germany - must not lose the increased competition in the world!" The last treasure of the automotive industry... Today, Automechanika Frankfurt – the world's largest trade fair for the automotive aftermarket – is opening its doors and I am looking forward to many new insights on this highly important market segment. While the whole auto industry is under massive pressure, the aftermarket continues to offer very healthy margins and a stable stream of revenues in turbulent times. Therefore, it is no surprise that many market participants (OEMs as well as suppliers and independent aftermarket players) are doubling down on this important business segment. Unlike the new car business that is gradually moving from combustion engines to EVs, the aftermarket for the existing car park will continue to be skewed towards conventional cars for decades to come - offering profit potential for the established carmakers and suppliers. The comprehensive service network coverage of established OEMs is also a key instrument to fend off Chinese car manufacturers in Europe who are still weak on this important element of the value chain. Nonetheless, there are also numerous challenges for the aftermarket: the low new car sales of the past few years as well as the increasing electrification have a negative impact on the business potential while lack of skilled workshop technicians represents a massive growth barrier for many players. Supply chain disruptions and cost inflation have the same negative effects on the business that they have for the overall industry. Irrespective of these challenges, the aftermarket continues to be the last treasure of the automotive industry – preserving and growing the market position will be a strategic imperative for future success in the industry. Today is a sad day for the fight against climate change and the enhancement of European competitiveness. The European Commission has decided to impose punitive tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs) from China. Unfortunately, even scientific institutes that I previously considered leading in their field (like Kiel Institute for the World Economy) seem not to understand the implications of this decision and support the simplistic ideas of the Commission. 😔🌍   The irony is that the industry the EU aims to protect understands the developments that will unfold with the permanent implementation of these tariffs better and argues vehemently against it. I recently listened to Carlos Tavares of Stellantis , one of the most innovative CEOs in the automotive industry, who should actually have been vocally advocating for protection measures – but he did and does not. The European industry wants to transition to greener and more affordable individual mobility, yet suddenly the European Commission is slamming on the brakes, and very hard so. 🚗💨   Maybe you think I'm biased, and I am. I believe that Europe should participate in the global transformation of the automotive industry rather than be threatened and stifled like the European mobile phone industry was. I am also old enough to see that protectionism has never saved a struggling industry – opening up and supporting the domestic industry has. Comparing the Chinese automotive industry of 2005 and today makes clear what I mean. Only when the Chinese automotive industry found its own path and strengthened its research and development could it establish itself as a serious threat. It seems the European Commission has not observed this development. 🌐🚙   Furthermore, I fear, like Mr. Tavares, that after this round of tariffs, more will follow in the coming years to protect the European automotive industry against even more advanced Chinese vehicles. This also means that European consumers will have to pay dearly for then very non-competitive vehicles. Take Proton from Malaysia as a cautionary example – the consumers paid the price for it. 💸🚘   My hope is that the tariffs can be avoided, otherwise, the European automotive industry will follow the path of the European solar industry. I see strong car manufacturers in Europe, all invested in Chinese companies and wanting to learn from them (apologies if I hurt the pride of some Europeans). In the worst case, the tariffs will lead Chinese companies to localize their production in Europe and continue to build better EVs because the Commission is focusing on a (scientifically) nonsensical tariff dispute instead of pursuing a coherent policy for the transformation of the automotive industry. 🌞🔧   So I hope that there won't be majorities for these tariffs, even though some – even large and powerful – European countries will push for it. I rely on the economic reason of the elected politicians. 🤞🌍

Vitesco Technologies and Schaeffler Merger On 24th April 2024 at the General Meeting the companies will most likely grant the approval of the Merger agreement as the culmination of the Tender Offer from Schaeffler that Vitesco accepted, which valued the shares of the latter at 94 EUR per share. The 3 reasons why I find this deal interesting and unique are: 1. The Bidder entered into an Acting-in-Concert agreement with 2 entities that in total hold 49.94% of the share capital and voting rights of Vitesco. 2. J.P. Morgan, Lazard and Perella Weinberg acted as Vitesco’s financial advisors for this deal and all 3 expressed in their Opinion Letters that the updated Offer Price is inadequate from the financial point of view 3. The Bidder expressed the ambition to finish the integration process by the end of the year. It will be interesting how Board Interlocks, IMO Committee consisting of the CEO, CFO and CHRO of both companies - both factors mentioned by Jeff Weirens and Mark Sirower in “The Synergy Solution” and in the publication in "Advances in Mergers and Acquisitions" journal by Olimpia Meglio, David R. King, Ph.D. and Elio Shijaku, Ph.D. on the role of social ties in addressing the information asymmetries in acquisitions will affect the integration process. Finally, a sequel that can keep up with part 1! 😌 I am of course referring to our second OKR (Objectives and Key Results) workshop. What hasn't changed compared to the "predecessor": the plot. The aim of the management framework is still to make our company processes more efficient, agile and targeted.   Of course, this is not possible without the commitment of everyone involved. That is why I would like to introduce you - on behalf of the Business Group Lifecycle Solutions - to a team that has taken on a leading role in our prequel: our Special Original Equipment (SOE) experts.   As you all know, the automotive industry is in a state of upheaval - it is therefore particularly important for our SOE team to respond to changing customer needs and market changes, while remaining flexible and driving innovation. This is precisely where the OKR framework should support.   In the workshop, the SOE team set clear goals and developed processes for regular review and adjustment.
