𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐬: Together with Google Cloud, we published a success story about our project with Enpal where we developed a solar panel estimation to help Enpal create customized sales offers. ✔️Our automation was able to reduce the process from 120 minutes per sales offer to just 15 minutes. ✔️From a technical perspective, it was a very exciting project as we had to think outside the machine learning box: we had to find a solution to account for different roof angles to generate accurate estimates, so we ended up extending the ML solution with mathematical methods (projective geometry, to be precise). Due to some lunch talks in the last weeks about books, i thought it could be valuable for you, to share a bit about my book readings from this year. No. 1 "Gamification, Digitization and Industry 4.0" is an interesting book for anyone dealing with the creation of new SaaS products, the future of work and general tech. management. It offers from my opinion valuable insights into the opportunities that arise from the digital transformation and shows how gamification can be used to seize these opportunities. In all of the three dimensions: product development, future of work and management as such. Everything explained on real gamification examples. Happy to be sharing some of my views on the role of models in the context of Digital Transformation. At tomorrow’s FEIT excellence lecture University of Technology Sydney and organised by Asif Gill Small spoiler: we should certainly stop ‘framing’ models as only being boxes and lines diagrams. Models come in different shapes and sizes, and may especially have different levels of precision and formality. As such, they are an important ingredient of the design dialogues taking place in enterprises at the moment of transformation.

Dear Germans! About the closure of #Volkswagen and more. One of the best Russian entrepreneurs, Olga Uskova, CEO and founder of Cognitive Pilot, the world's leading company in AI technologies for unmanned piloting in agriculture, rail transportation (and beyond), wrote this: "FUNERAL OF A NATIONAL IDEA In Germany, a magnificent funeral of national ideas took place these days. Yes, yes, national ideas. In the process, it is difficult to call it a funeral of the People's Brand Volkswagen. Since I was closely acquainted with some of the directors from the top of #VW, I know a little more deeply how the plant (and the country) were sunk. I want to share. In 2014, the US made a cooling shot to the head of VW using its favorite method. They arrested the company's CEO, Mr. Winterkohn, on charges of being a "green" democrat. Mr Winterkorn, who once ran Germany's highest-paid state, faces criminal charges including fraud, market manipulation and making false statements. Prosecutors accused him of failing to notify authorities and Volkswagen owners when he learned in 2014 of a software method designed to secretly open new territories that exceeded restrictions, established measures and administrative regulations. The unprecedented brazenness of the attack has gone down in the history of world commercial warfare. Thanks a lot Christoph Beckmann and Elmar Weber for organizing yesterday's CTO Roundtable Berlin for a panel discussion on 'Is there a formula for high-performing P&D teams?' with Eric Bowman, Dan Gebler, Alex Ischenko and Fabian Wesner. Main takeaways of my notes: - Trust - Cross-functional teams - Figure out what success looks like and communicate it - Clear goals, clear focus - Processes are key and need to be under control. Everybody should know what the purpose of these are - If you need to see data, look at DORA KPIs and DevEx Surveys Can not agree more. It all boils down to building trust, explaining why and giving direction. Extra tip: If you're new to a company, consider starting a journal. It can be helpful to reflect on your initial impressions, particularly things that seemed off at first. As you become more accustomed to the workplace, these early observations can provide valuable insights that you might no longer notice. Looking forward to the next one!

"Code is Law? How our legal system must adapt to smart contracts and legal tech" was the topic of the 4th Blockchain Roundtable in the Bundestag with Federal Minister of Justice Dr. Marco Buschmann and Frank Schäffler. An exciting topic! IMHO: Smart contracts are just plain old computer code. The only difference from the current status quo of computer code is that the integrity of the "execution machine" on which this computer code runs is ensured by a blockchain/DLT network instead of a trusted third party. That's all! This means that the only responsibility that shifts here is ensuring the integrity of the "execution machine." The remaining responsibilities largely stay the same: software developers/maintainers, software deployers, software operators, etc. Moreover, there is no guarantee for error-free code, and the code is subject to change because the requirements for the code change. Additionally, every change represents a new potential for errors. Finally, I do not believe that legal agreements and laws can be completely encoded in computer code, and smart contracts face the same limitations. I assume, this is because agreements and laws are not entirely deterministic in the sense of a computer algorithm; they also contain elements that describe intent and allow for interpretation. As many have requested, here are the slides from the recent #iapp event in Munich. Andreas Sachs, Data Protection Authority for the private sector in Bavaria, delivered a great presentation on anonymization which also touched briefly on the application within AI solutions. While the talk was very informative as always, it didn't really address the crucial question: how to manage the supervisory authorities' stance on anonymization as a processing activity subject to the requirements of Article 9 GDPR where applicable. The discussion obviously quickly shifted to this issue. Although Article 6(1)(f) GDPR covers anonymization in general, what is the authorities advice for Art. 9 GDPR? My personal takeaway: Apparently, everyone sees the issue with Article 9 GDPR and anonymization, except the EDPB. We will see if they have something meaningful to say in their upcoming guidance. In my opinion, the current stance of the authorities does not align with the principles of "effet utile". The goal of these requirements is to protect sensitive data, not to obstruct measures that reduce risk, the current interpretation is not effective in doing that. Considering the overall opinion of the European authorities, it will probably take a court decision to overcome this.
